Y: The Last Man

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 – running time 29:40
With the series coming to conclusion, it's time for iFanboy to take a long look at the series that was Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan, and Pia Guerra.

Vertigo's series about a gender-cide, killing all the males on earth, and the only man left standing, ran for 6 years, and is one of the greatest modern comic series available. Writer Brian K. Vaughan, and artist Pia Guerra created a vibrant series with fun, action, as well a heart. Available collected in 10 trade paperback volumes, and an upcoming hardcover version, this series will be talked about for years to come.

Josh, Ron and Conor discuss the series and what was so great about it, and why this series made Vaughan a star, and helped get him a job writing for ABC's Lost. Then, after the sponsor break, the guys talk about the ending, so if you haven't had a chance to read it, watch out for spoilers. But if you did read the series, we dissect the much anticipated end to Yorick Brown's story.

" War. This episode of I fan boys brought you by. The national campaign against drunk driving GoDaddy and Netflix. 22 -- yet to do the math to you have to go. Two months with the fact that we YouTube. Welcome to life and boy the top of discussion shall I am wrong I'm here worth. Connor and I'm Josh we gonna talk about Y the last man. And finally I finally for those of you moving being trades. You're trying to get a chance to read it for those of us and read it every issue since the first one. That was awesome and and this is probably one of our most requested series to talk about it cover and we got a little selfish in that car reading and trades that we want talk medals all finished and so the -- from Moscow with and then we. Finally read it and absorb bitten and yeah I mean this this book -- The issues. And and it near the end they actually spread the other coming out bimonthly. Which sucked. And then so like the last Syria on the got sort of a bunch of them but same time they dated did you -- talk about the whole series. And and what we like about it. And that stuff look at that I -- me because you're like what you're doing. Is you're waiting for me it is true. There about the instability indeed be general wireless land rich are the whole series and then at the end of this we're gonna talk by the end of the book it's why we're going to tell you. If you haven't read into the book. Don't want I don't want you know not -- to want to keep watching but we are notorious it will warn you before that happens we'll be more general. Outlets awesome Clinton this series is one of those ones that was known for getting to the end and there was a lot of a minute -- weeks go to oppose the close friends. OK so what is why last and you might ask in 2000. Believe. I should probably check the facts before we start with separate but nobody say they say it here that I don't think the bottom. Bob Bryan cave on a relative unknown at the time he had no one he had done swamp thing. I don't want. Covered -- to this is in the summer night in 2002. Now that's what happens right now right anyway on Brian -- we should just start over. I -- on who really had only done I think a couple of things from marble and swamp thing he done that this swamp -- series about a few notes one think tank horribly. And this came out of nowhere this was my pick of the week the first first time it came out because the from the very first step on the first issue. I was like oh this is something really special so what you got is York brown. 22 year old student or not student who just cannot school magician and escape artist trying to kid kind of -- dirty pop culture. Obsessed kind of kid he's about to propose his girlfriend is love there and then all the man on earth I. And is meadow mountain -- on everything male population except for him and his --"

" The sudden males are hemorrhaging blood and everyone every male on the planet -- your get his."

" His mark -- percent of them so read away what you have is a really great. Science fiction idea but then as you get going you go. You start thinking about that cultural ramifications of what actually would be like and that is where for me the book really. Really grabs onto it really has a lot to say and what's funny is that the more than I redid the more than I think about it there are so many stories the could've been done. Because gender issues bird society you know. Are huge."

" Threat -- but -- before it's as though the story elements is -- report an ugly dimension ran 660 issues. Pia guerra was the main artist on some and the vast majority in the right abhorrence and talk came in for other parts of -- Very all you almost couldn't tell the difference. And it came at a time when vertigo was have a lot of energy behind it nearly two dozens salmon wrapped up what was wrapping up and tell us government preacher was over a minute. And this kind of does emerge in the past appears as the leading kind of -- yet and we if we pose a question a couple of few episodes back -- when yourself back together. What was the next big -- look after what ends in the us so why has meant a lot of -- line why hasn't lied to me is is one of those really break out comic books I think since preacher. And yet people read this book who don't read comics and I did this give this argument -- anecdotally yes and they can't put down he's our reading and you want the next anyone the next one it's totally toppled crack in Africa and from the moment."

" First issue -- they've talked about the movies you know that's been censored version for years. Do you think he took a crack at the script yet. And as one of C that is an HBO series or whatever this is that big. Rambling story that as an end. You know it goes for the sixty ages five years theoretically. You know and it's just there's all sorts of stuff in there -- it's that it journey of these characters over a long period of -- could see them develop and things happen in the air gets longer."

" You're older will there -- That. Bullies on the kind of on the premise is that all the money in the world. Except for York and how gender side what what I thought was really what I thought was religious -- was the legs and the fact that had a society is that is that. You know enough and this is done by no means am pro women and you know like I'm not say I have -- this -- is that it allows anybody over here but what happens is that society basic falls apart power -- up working all technology got the government falls apart I mean basically it's mass chaos. Because if you look at it won't you know not seeing men run everything but there -- half and -- from more of the population. So are we on all the stuff yes vote select as the secretary of agriculture. Education -- spouse -- and some -- some like 37 in line woman becomes president of the United States and and it didn't -- and then what happens is that. It becomes chaos in the streets and some women. Don't know what to do and kind of go hungry and -- 'cause they can't find themselves while the women kind of mobilizing. These little militias in the Amazon."

" What you see is is society fractures in -- certain people who want to put some you know get stuff together the government holds the other York's -- congresswoman since she. You know she's she's trying to keep things together and then him. Large portions of America become. A Marshall always lands basically you know where you have the Amazon's work group of women who've decided that. This is the best thing that -- ever happened. Mail. Dominance. It was it was proving everybody down so they've all cut off a boob. And they wanted to really and really and it does anybody who -- with the -- again."

" Behold the whole plot of the story is now you've got the one guy left and now it's. And yet to survive these can't be found out because he's a lot --"

" The man -- he's you think about that like. I mean what happens in the book is a giant. Political power struggle about who can control the last man because he is most would have -- the only -- it's the repetitions the more like once you start thinking about it. And he's the only way that the species can continue right. You know. I don't know address of the casket but. They clone within the but I'm and then at the same -- got the political ramifications of the decision of his girlfriend who he wants obscure Australian Australia and he just lost against her."

" He cited his girlfriend he's got a -- he took pictures of this year long road trip yet the book is one long road trip because he goes he's constantly moving. Rather than be -- he's our New York. Right and isn't Paris at the needs look at the press yet there all of the players he bounces around the globe. He ends up with a with a bodyguard protector."

" A agency 55 a secret agent of the -- terrain which is a kind of very. Black ops kind of arm of the government goes act like Thomas Jefferson isn't like that you got added and -- ended. Along the way to meet with -- for Fred he's got a doctorate everybody tightly edited -- a whole little group hit -- And that's a big -- to check -- with them for a long -- you sort of know the -- it's surprising by the -- how well you know -- how attached to get to them say yes big time. There's a monkey. That and the -- monkey and and so who is so we'll drop the whole -- when he got not only that your trying to tell you're from then you get the mystery of why don't -- eyes and answer the Doctor Who did meet up with his necessity she has a key to a -- gets -- in late in my notes -- collapse have Cisco's tells us that Cisco and and the travel doesn't come across country and they meet up with -- of people -- pack. Packs of women that are in setting up their own culture is like one town I think was -- Ohio that they got the power plant -- working and had it was like it was just like normal life just there are no men in the some women are very happy with that -- many turned lesbianism isn't my love and something that happens that's wrong and I want to do you have to. And -- this -- problem I got photos and music but then and then along the way of little deviations like in the midwest. Eddie Russian astronauts crash and there's actually a man amongst them inside that was worth a thousand seeing him to their people if they -- the F finding different ways one."

" Things that let me talk about there's the big story and there's the little story yeah I mean it's it's man trying to find his love. Which is really great but then on top this is like that the -- the brilliance of Bryan cave on right you know that's going on the whole time in just she kept throwing things and like him he was really good at thinking of stuff like order if there's -- restaurant space they would live. That there. They would have so -- comes back end and into these little diversions like what are your facing this year by hanging -- that we are less than she didn't know that was a weird. -- bad -- we're glad it. I think about Brian bomb when he read his work and you read these issues. You see god has really got a master of the form -- This is everybody everybody talks about like though -- make some new movie or whatever but again this is another book that uses the form of the comic book. Every page in this is like sort of a little artwork onto itself he's really good at pacing the pages you read through them that. This sort of punch line at the end of each page and then -- Take that further at the end of each issue. This is every year. Every issue cliff -- at the end I made this a really really fun book to read it in and issues -- you rented mansion yes which it is normally the reverse is normally you're in the -- trade as well one of the best sort of ironic children's sequential sort of types of stories. And I'm sure reads -- trade and it's because and you go more because the fact as you finish issue when you would want more. But an end he had a plan for what was going to happen so we knew the whole time how is -- and and house that was going to go at it. It creates a really nice arc and I really -- read the whole thing you get to the end and you see how the characters end up. It's just it's a very smooth transition to the whole thing we don't you realize it's happening just like it was your own life."

" It's important to mine -- is is a very adult book. That's the point that. Not just affected him if he's a very very mature very sophisticated of the societal themes of gender issues. Lots of nudity lots of language I mean this is very adults Entertainment Tonight that Hardaway but have -- everything about us is. High minded yet you know -- lot is nothing simple in this book is no simple answers. Everyone has different motivations of the people who are that are episode -- and bad candidates have different wants -- people who."

" like one of that sort of group surveillance I guess is there's the Israeli army does alter that on and one of the really smart things that he thought of as well. If all the men died who'll be the best army in the world well the Israeli army did not travel because they're men and women are equal in both trained and combat they're all innocent so. You know they're probably -- on the left standing army. You know who who are trained to to fight so -- the most popular -- right there's women -- most of it but the Israeli army for the most -- Because everybody's joined the army and then they did one of the things. To bring up is that if this complaint to some people had about this book that. -- like York. I didn't like nor yet like you're -- and you never camera to -- He's going to nerd music pop culture nerd is constantly quoting things a little awkward he's always. -- moment he's trade this whole you know kind of idea of this guy -- into the season Houdini escape arts and all that kind of stuff but then he's also always quoting her movies and ray -- and then try and the thing is that you think about I think editors of position and you're the you're the lone male. After the gender apocalypse Xena like I can't I can -- it -- to get a surprisingly well -- in any its first he's very low he's very. Not taking it very seriously -- one of the things. I was -- as I was I was reading through the end of this again is that. -- away. And -- does this the whole thing if you watch for he reverses the generals. Because you've York is the is the weaker of the of the payment or 55 -- the main sort of not club for him an assistant to. Yeah yeah yeah system becomes on them lungs right and the symptoms. And so so the whole time Mike York is playing the traditional part of the damsel in distrust of -- you know -- stated trouble. Yes he's going and doing the stupid really he was kind of an affirmative. Yeah knowing what I did. I can't say so in the end they added they disguise a lot opening days some of the -- he a lot of women -- gas -- for the -- on the -- citizen knows that was an easy cover that was an as the -- the use. I don't think he ever actually fully dressed up like a woman the woman you walk around employment America because a lot of women you know we're progressive -- man right what do you think about -- comic books what the idea traditionally and you know wolf what and a mayonnaise and -- Y the last man. And so you think a big -- you know. -- Clark Kent or captain America or you know just big dudes in and and York was not met in -- was more like dudes that. Now he's almost appear for reprieve. Ask anybody hours and I think that that bat and you know the -- not completely differently had he been a firefighter Matt you know --"

" To survive I think you would have been found until related reason it's your kids are right he's sort of courage that he didn't like York I think is very irritated. Plagued with I didn't dislike -- stuff like his everything that you described as I just an irritating like if I don't have real real life. But it. She was -- all -- okay and I think he shouldn't he wasn't supposed beer tea and all the -- I reacted to him like that I mean people were likes talking. But I got -- fans -- coming at the very end outside you know this is a major problems but so much and I really. Don't like to make her that doesn't like all the characters around him a lot like -- to -- my the -- part of the best character but. You know but it -- like enough. On the so let's talk about the end and at this point all -- the end we'll take a break come back. Republicans."

" In 200613. 1470. People were killed and alcohol impaired driving crashes. These fatalities account of the 32% of the total motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States. If you're planning to drink alcoholic friends designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys."

" There's no way to -- drive drunk and we will find you cops everywhere are stepping up enforcement and --"

" Let's talk about the end and it made you haven't read it here in the middle reading interview want to read you might want us pause there just we need to be held responsible. Okay spoiler alert -- my. First thought about this book is that on the surface you think -- the point of this is what killed the man wreck that is not important in this book that and it's not the point of the book. If that's like all science fiction right yeah that's why that's you know it's good science science that."

" Soon as good -- about society. Now the people event and in the world and not about the fame and status as the men died and that's the stuff like. Curtains blocking that thing isn't zombies or why there's obviously people what passes people. This is sort out of the people in the world will have in the world the moment that. Not -- chord -- so much -- fact that in the final book this is the wise we're -- left from sources like what I read towards the end of the book."

" She's fifteen. Yeah whatever it sly he's you're just finally reunited with his girlfriend I mean -- in Paris that. Actually just before you get into that little footnote as a father United turns out right when that. Happens five years ago there on the phone when all the men died and she was about to dump them yes but it never happened and so -- in the past 557 Irish fighter."

" very familiar like all the tolls they paid athletes. -- a better way to close and -- I was really arterial line but it entered in terms of the not worry about what happened did better than New Yorker talking. And -- as far as Kansas goes it was vaguely unsatisfying and and that's says. After everything you've been through his or any other place that would have been satisfactory that's sort of almost talking to us saying I think so no one would have been satisfied with his answer yeah brooks is on aliens. I was having -- with witchcraft for all the metal box like. Well that's the nano bot is talking today answering yeah almost directed right give us say don't worry about Wideman back that's how this is about -- thought that was really good choice -- his partner."

" And I agree with that -- because that is not what it's about and it would have been no satisfactory -- no evidence would have been a sort of -- months. And then you realize what it wasn't as a character piece because at the end what they do. So bay finish everything up and he finds out that. He was chasing bet the whole time but really what is happening now Thomas he's lining up to 355 was his soul mate need -- And then Brian Jim Bunning rips my guts out I guess -- first about the that review also was so he probably needs of the best and they have a wonderful ninety Obama bananas big argument. Palm spinning out how true that is I was also I was totally act and person you think you meant fours -- not separate because you can build them up your mind for five years and all of a sudden like anything bad about them is gone right. And everything great about the ms."

" It's the realization -- community thought that was was good it believable but like it I don't think she was his soul -- because -- no reason he'd been working their stock -- providers of course they grabbed me. He had to bed -- of her leaving him of course is that we made it should be with her so it was very real and that kind of you know that that -- I -- they are meant to each other whenever Dennehy completely rips the heart out. Untreated is around us and just is I found myself I was completely choked up I was I was I was awful mean Qaeda. Yeah. Describing finally I think you're. Wrong and I think the relationship became a minute. Have a little militia grows again write an essay is about -- the thinking that she was actually it's only an all want to set up well because probably insulate -- that's that's that's. And it -- the part is that casesa."

" Talking up your combat have a night together and yes a lot of passion and the private. An argument your realizes he's not -- that anymore they changed much and realizes -- he goes to her. Admits he's low a third she's she admits that -- military. Booster shot in the head by the Israeli."

" Very equal fight it was yeah it was a negative I think you have what does she does he holds on he takes a stick away yeah longevity of the Pentagon -- benefits -- he did he hold of them that's great point he's finally able to sort of sort of person rat and in the end being the very end of the book is is jump. Sixty dollars in the last issue."

" No less this youngsters of -- unless Obama got to kill me and it re read it I've read that whatever came out few months ago and I just -- read it now. And -- this morning I was catching up and I read and I was eating breakfast as a lawful. And it killed -- monkey god loves you done with models -- Michael any in the month he has any took them he gives them onto the poisoned grape and a this sooner. -- six."

" Is if you -- your -- York is an old old man I love that we -- And then through that -- was are gone back and we see you know we see York's east of league ball was I was really nice it was called -- a couple issues relating to get through that anybody does and has. My parents spending yeah and and it's another one isn't bonded really well because he's saying. This kind of thing if you would actually be thinking about your the last. Last dude you're worried about losing Eric Harris and nobody got. Let us yet and something people ICC that in the future you know what the president of the world whatever is is directly related want to character than our crew and and you know what I -- a baby boy is the czar of Russia did exactly this is the rate was the child well the Russian astronauts that was pregnant examined the enabling. We see that his seat on the go further back we see that his -- settle down with death which -- candidate is an army I hope you continue to. And then finally you know it just common -- in the -- of the monkey which was just -- And finally settled the last panelists -- York was using the clone the whole time to find a way to escape yeah all these and that's. -- Prospects of talking Europe's traditional manner yeah. I leveled York and he's very left pages took the freedom yet which I thought I thought you -- Phillips off. Now that I didn't know I mean he's well before you turn the page I don't even when you when you read back through -- you realize that he's setting up the whole time and you watch the panels like he's he's like working with things and sort of hinting at what's going to happen because he's been escape our. This is the one thing he's been competent at the whole time with. And today it that's stemming from a storytelling standpoint how nice is that to bring you back to -- is the beginning the first issue starts with -- in the strait jacket up you know doing the AC pars are serious and the the last thing is the straitjacket free which means that he's freed himself and burn in everything has access and -- you guys though. Oh my god awful ultimately it was annoying monkey that was it this has learned the example of what -- does so well that didn't."

" And they give -- creator. This based helpless long story five years of character development. And just becoming attached to beat these two -- and you don't have happening almost and other companies and that. You get here you have to tell the unix or -- here there's five years do it."

" also -- that you heard it also helps that it took nobody in the -- and blow it is still right on the safe anyway I wondered -- murdered when this started in today's market. You know similar what we're talking about -- and Aaron and and now armed -- whether or not -- always a lot of worry about variable to making it and like this is the goals of making you gotta get past like four trades were the books. I have people because the thing is that we talked to a lot of retailers preacher RY the last man or are great for retailers because -- crack is excel the first book them and more than more like more times than not. That person is back in a week for an excellent idea and they come back about the next four. And and so like if you it's kind of like the TV where he get a hundred episodes and everybody knows syndication new you've made it again this for -- crater great creative team the goal is it's like four countries and actually having taken that people feel like crack addiction."

" Well then and then this is this is the best that I think that -- any time this comes -- this is universally good book yes indeed it's it's as a concept it's so easy to explain to him but then the more you dig the more -- you find it is endlessly -- still think of all these things he could have done --"

" Literally what would be true stories following your tennis team. Pros on the people that are also involved in but there's a whole world and could be explored a total of what's happening how to get the government back -- what's happening and he's generally well it's really -- and rich world the."

" And is seen -- like they're like -- TiVo like what happened all of him in -- musicians you know it's like such as Kurt Cobain died -- Everyone then -- like just those things start thinking about our world a set up it's it's a fifty makes you think a lot of I. I sit stinky stinky but it's I think it's a -- just into the bright -- on who is one of our one million that we interviewed him in her first -- second episodes ago. That this wraps up the same year that he's pretty much left -- and he's escapes -- this isn't this isn't a problem. As he moves on to lost into the regulated dollar. And let me. X market stability it's gotten a lot of stuff going really."

" We -- really remiss if we did talk more about gate areas are yes oh god yeah who as solid as much for collaborated with -- is that the as responsible. I found myself marveling at the last straight just at home. Person is."

" Then she thought there have been very simple simple approach it was opposite like who would you not think about look when I think of the murder of a book. He used to be kind of misty Dylan to veteran country tonight now it's BR my last managed -- It now because the what is I think that I think those those styles are very connected because what it is is it's. It's in its simplicity of about lies what it's doing like there's no line wasted and yes right out -- she's not letting. It's very people granted the faces. It's all conveyed in because it's it's character piece we -- anything now for women are without being like. -- Another realistic in an area that's very that's awesome it's very clean crisp are date that this -- story goes across the United States into towed into Japan into. It never anti Arab and never does -- not feel natural author and write it enhances remark and it's although again this is our. On the rare what kind of tax and trade paperbacks of us or that we all agree. Yes and which is very you know which is rare -- and in the horrible stories where. I would buy this multiple forms are we outlined an absolutely love it would've been on the books they're going to car creditors about that this is the book where the hunting -- it's getting is -- the on the -- are currently -- and -- treatments that's nothing that's a little library one. We can go on about this for a time isn't so much there I I hope that our. This sort of jedi about what's about what we thought about it's it's high it's hard to do the show Israel like this -- is. Good about it but it that he would do when it. Maybe isn't quite a lot of different the last man and a who doesn't look so there was another thousand sex and the thing is it immediately think it's a male power offense is not the opposite which is a parasite nightmare. Terribly exactly what it would actually be program area that sort of you can think of a terrifying night major writes to us at contact at -- dot com. Or did you why it was called mostly that a lot of us that calls I was -- that -- it and boys is one candidate for it to 66."

" Senate and go to I Fenway dot com a different on this show a Y the last man to -- thought about that. Ticket our weekly audio show a couple of new books the week. And every three dot com slash FM boys they're all habeas -- you go there discuss the show what's all of our weekly needs all that stuff and the Malibu you know. And he he turns and good taste and you like."

" But that's okay. I was so the whole scene of his girlfriend another argument it happened right after they did it and they contracted cargo to thought was really realistic -- you know like really Ross yeah spirits up. Can pull punches in this did things you like oh he decided to keep them naked for that. Read this -- is no reason not to."

" Atmospherics just. I was first and if if not the first issue you -- that someone get a straight. Right behind the -- and here -- here these let me in -- California. What's going to happen all the women. I don't suck."

" In ancient feudal Japan and -- needed to record his friend shot coming into the -- For a decent price guest is most loyal samurai for council and the camera. They gave him the flip video camera with that he was able to record all of his -- and lady friends at the Rangers you. It was easy all the had to do with us.

I found it interesting the last trade made me so emotional and choked up. Normally that is not something that happens to me when watching movies or reading but I just had such a strong connection to the characters that it was overwhelming.

I am surely going to buy this in hardcover as they come out as I think this is one of my favorite stories of any kind of all time.

You know, I never really had a problem with Yorick. I may have gotten impatient with him from time to time, and I know he was supposed to be somewhat frustrating in order to develop as a character, but I related to the guy. I felt like I was right there with him. Maybe that's just because we have a lot of shared interests and I'm a Houdini fanatic too.

he reminded me so much of my boyfriend. like, their personalities are almost identical-- the way they joke and how they try to make light of things all the time and how he never really took anything serious until the end

Listen, if you ever go to Australia and you talk to him and it sounds like he's going to propose and you want to break up with him, you call me.
