3D Animation in Photoshop is Out of This World!
Monday, February 16th, 2009 running time 18:19
Use 3D shapes and animation to create rotating planets and moons in Photoshop. Bert demonstrates how to apply lighting and styles to create a realistic outer-space experience.
This week, we're looking at 3D in Photoshop from a different perspective: Deep Outer-Space! You'll learn how to create planets and moons in their orbit. Here are the steps:
Set up a tiled Earth graphic for animation
Bert shows us how to rotate a moon around our Earth using movie files. Start with a full, flat image of the earth (just Google the image for a free, public graphic). Copy, and paste the image into a new document (don't delete your original document - we'll return to it later). Enlarge the new canvas width by 300% and make an additional 2 duplicates of this earthly image, tiled horizontally. Copy all that is visible, then paste into your original document.
Apply animation
In your animation window, switch to frame view, a new frame, and move the image to the opposite edge. Apply about 5 frames of tweening, then render the video. You'll need to wait for a few minutes while Photoshop processes the rotating image of Earth. A Quicktime video will be created when the animation is complete.
Apply rotation to the globe
Import the movie file to your original document (Layer > Video Layer > New Video Layer from File) and delete your old layer of Earth. The new layer will have a movie icon on the layer thumbnail. Create a globe by choosing 3D > New Shape from Layer > Sphere. Adjust the lighting as desired through the 3D Lighting panel.
Add stars
Monochromatic noise on the dark background creates stars with some adjustments.
Add a moon to Earth's orbit
With a flat moon image file, apply a Sphere shape as done previously to the Earth. When sized correctly, move the moon to the side of the Earth. To adjust the lighting to match Earth, select both layers, then choose 3D > Merge 3D Layers. The moon will then take on the same properties as the Earth.
Cast shadows on the Earth
To apply shadows on the Earth as the moon orbits, apply 3D Render Settings > Ray Trace. When you choose OK, a shadow will appear. You can apply layer styles to the shadow to make it look realistic.
Render the video
When exporting your movie, rendering will take some time (at least a few minutes) to create the movie frame-by-frame for every element in this file, like positioning, shadows, and lighting. Apply a loop and you're done!

" You in using this code and now on that show. So they're gonna talk about 3-D again -- gonna look at creating from a totally different standpoint. Because we're going to. He basically now my script to have a big black void of space that would do is create some nice heavenly bodies. But it's gonna require a new plan around to make things look right so now I'm gonna do is basically I'm gonna have the earth sitting on the space stars behind it and the moon going around the earth. -- pretty programs it's pretty easy to create two objects the earth and moon and happens sitting around and so on. But here when you take to -- is going to -- relate to each other you have to kind of merged into objects together. That creates a little problem because that when the moon move it around the earth it will look like. The moon is always over the exact same spot and here. So that's not really the way it works so many to have the earth spinning at a different speed and -- which really can't do here so what I'm going to do is. That earth instead of being just an object it's going to be a movie. The Earth's spinning around so it'll look like it's spinning at a different speed than the moon going around so who work around. So right here I have a mayor of the earth and I to put this down from. Going into Google and saying flat picture the earth. And there were thousands of them lot of them were kind of stylized some pretty cool. Most of them were free which is what's important here that this is no copyright thing going on here this is public domain so -- downloaded this. So armadillo is I've beat -- make this into a movie that it's spinning around so two of them do area I'm gonna select all. And then copy rights I just gonna say copy. You can be selected now. It good. Dude there. If true and right layer that I create a new file it's gonna reflect the contents of the clipboard not good okay. And I'll paste that in there there's. The say they would just cut right through there it is in his own layer and -- and I need to do is to have three different versions of this earth. Spending so it's gonna look like one continuous loop going round and round some basically going to create the animation three of these. So I'm gonna go in here and and larger."
" Size and I can't the second have three of these night look at my camp besides it right now tells me it's twelve point. 375. On the -- which is what I have to increase and seven point 167 on the hype that's -- status thing. Of them -- a change on the change the width. So three times twelve point 375 happens to be 37. Point 125 now not because them on math wiz is just because I have a calculator so I go in there and say. He -- image size. And I'm an action packed my image -- I -- canvas size. New user error there. So I don't -- and changed its 237. Point 125. And put the original right there on the far right. Click OK so now -- pull back a little bit to conceal this stuff together here and we'll pull back and we feel we have all of this. Space here's what we're doing and a copy this guy straight across. Put right back where is animate copy of them. Second there a move over in this that it tap right in there. And going to bring this over and -- little bit ago on a copy them over again. San Diego -- and credit that it threads that go ahead and flattened its. As opposed and I say flat this plan -- image and under the go until my. Select all again. Select the whole thing so -- all. I'm gonna copy it."
" imagined I think about it this -- We don't need anymore don't save it come back to our original. And it still has got away with blow this one away right there and I'm gonna go hair cut and paste. Pasted a whole -- on which this one here is the movie. Date it's that whole -- going across and so on. So -- do that civic theater and that's just move over and that he isn't the three pieces so and I want to doing them go to my animation window. And in my animation window I'm in switch to the little previously feet of frame rate data taken and you frame. And this new frame I'm gonna go ahead and move this guy all the way over to the other end."
" I there I say had a bunch of frames in between the -- twelve and whatever I want but I'm not actually gonna do the generation now. Because this to say okay that for a five frames. I'll come over here and we're not gonna do it because it does take time to render this but I don't go ahead and show you that the process and we're going to say export. And say render video. All right so now -- I didn't go to save as quicktime movie I have all these parameters reckons that and I hit render. We're gonna have to sit here and wait for a few minutes which we don't really have some just going to cancel that. I've not just goat close my animation and we need to see that when anymore and applicability of my layers and you'll see to have eight. Video layers here. From upstate new video layer from file. And what I have is actually have down here let's switch over to quicktime for a second. To be open up my quicktime. And that's switched to a finder. And enough finder I have some quicktime movies here. So -- it's a perfectly -- today and we have some movies. -- right here we have the the quicktime movie is gonna open up there it is and we play you see that it's just going to be the earth -- say -- is that that a quick time movie. Okay so that that's that all right so now back into I think I'm gonna go and say give me a video -- bit the dual layer from file and that file is going to be what we just saw his movies and is the the earth moving okay there it is. And I faith opened. So it's gonna come in here and there appears -- is got a real film clip them right there but but back here that -- and that's those -- away. And the few that want to -- is -- but this time it's a quick time movie. It looks like the other one but it's actually quicktime movie that we can go and play so I'm gonna do now is on the turn back. Into the earth take the movie itself. The movie go up to my 3-D and say. New shape from layer. Sphere."
" And it's gonna go -- figure it out and it's gonna give me. Did my fear it's the sphere of the earth itself. Which I'm now going to go there -- play around with -- lightning hit play around with the flight Philip what this guy down here for now and that's just open about treaty. Menu here and that's the that this third light. And I have controls that life and go ahead of play -- that light. I'm gonna go enhanced player that life until I had my -- right about there it's gotten more intense. I'd really intense kind of like there it is and what's -- move that lights so its right about the side like. That there it is really nice bright light red on the side of the earth via a case we have this like that we moved into position. That's because that wouldn't that -- to actually go in there and make this -- a little bigger to estimate the earth -- the bigger it's gotten as big a group like that. I tonight you know this. Background back here it's kind of playing right now and he's the stars practice so in the background the go ahead and give that some of filter. And -- there lot of noise gives some noise a lot of monochromatic noise monochromatic who's got a lot of noise click okay. And I'm gonna go ahead of below that a little bit. Has moved remorse that introduction of -- going to allow me to going to modify. It's gonna do now on go to my adjustments and go down here to my -- levels. And levels on the that the owners are pushing in my blacks. And put my whites suspected that makes those star field going on back there that's good that's too many stars. I can and we got -- okay we got to move stars going on back there. That we have this layer the layer with the moon so to do with that on it I'm gonna go ahead and say. 3-D. Knew there shape from layer and give that atmosphere. And now the -- they. A sphere which I'm gonna go ahead and make that small but that's going to make it much smaller. -- like that that's a good size and I'm gonna move it move into position over here to the side of the earth right about there like that. Now right now the moon is just really dark and we had these two layers so one -- with select both players. I want the latest -- who select the two days ago fled the two layers and I'm gonna go reinstate the -- 3-D layers. Now when I emerged that you're gonna see that the moon is gonna take on the properties of the -- state it's got the same lighting to it. Now. If -- come over here tonight lighting controls I can set -- might render settings and menu settings I would go and right now have a solid a mistake they Trace. -- is gonna cast shadows and so. I don't reflections that I want the to be reflect that I just want to see that but I do want it to casting shadows that click okay and now it's gonna cast a shadow on the Earth's that I going there and let's say we rotate this whole scene. It's gonna take a little longer. But you'll be -- a couple who show there's a shadow of the moon as and little on CB is that shadow of the moon being cast on top of the earth. I known as soft those shadows diffuse them make a little lighter whatever is necessary to make it look real. So going there just -- with the shadows now once I have a complete rotation Pakistan a whole rotation for this entire scene. I could then go in there and Faye Bender. Export rendered our video and against that Apple's programmers that have a nice little movie. But I'm not gonna waste time and branded app for -- business times going to take even longer that's going to hand painted frame by frame. And as is -- frame by frame it's gotta. Figure out the shadows that figure out the positions of the continent's and so on and so forth and be movement of that movie which is Europe with a separate movie movement around right. So has got to figure out that going on the moon going around the shadows so that takes a little time. We're not talking days. But we are talking quite a few minutes much more time than we have here so I'd do -- I already have a movie. His setup for is I'm gonna just go ahead and open up that that movie. And open up files and right here I had the movie already created for it."
" He could see it and put an add on and they've hit the earth spinning at a different speed and the moon is going around it that it. And notice they -- a shadow of the moon as it comes around. We -- this. That is that the do. And I want to see what to mores comes back into this area here you're gonna see the shadow of the earth being cast on the -- so here is a shadow on the earth. And it comes a shadow of the earth on the moon -- in the moon's dark respective comes around. And it spins and hit the earth spinning at different speeds and the moon the moon itself is -- on Europe but it's not spinning because we always see the same face amount. As there comes around again. And we could just -- tea and stared -- of that. But the whole point of -- hoping that we created a and -- movie we've created a movie out of some layers. And that movie was brought into the media realm we took that movie sphere -- we're seeing the movie inside of this little ball. So that I would be rotation of the earth was a movie set at the -- puts in at a different speed than the moon going around that don't have -- got merged together. Then they don't move together the earth looks like it's sitting at different speeds and the moon and that's because the movie. And the shadows being cast by the moon and the -- are affecting each other person see the shadow of the -- On top of the earth. And then there goes around -- you can be. Earth casting a shadow on the -- now. How to set up reflection. Then you would actually see defection of the moon inside the earth. So there's just some ideas of proud three -- so many capabilities of anything that you could do this discretion going to."
" Airplane with this stuff. Going in there figure out what this does push a button you push a button there and you'd be surprised both of you to figure out. Hope -- something from that. If there's anything you'd like to see -- show email me Bert and revision3.com. Also you can check out the form that revision3.com. Ports that forms. We can join discussions about the show. Relations are important because we've gotten some that like really kind. And some that are just to bail at the crop parts often that's not good you don't our crop this -- that it fits right in that screen. Open and I something from all this remember it plain and that's what is concerns to sit there and play watch a couple of shows we've -- the books. What's -- play push those buttons you would they do.
My new book it's been out for awhile now and died. Covers a lot of these details is that and additional. Five captors and I'm not even the printed page when you. By the book you can download these five factors which could be -- on things like layers and channels and brushes and so want that additional chapters which would mean the book really fix and I can. My spoke with a nice color things and get downloads of those chapters. But the book talks about all of these details of how like create things -- day's work and how I use and how -- you -- your spouse so go and check it out. And also of stone town until April 5. If you're near San Francisco. Pop over across these dates of Moraga. At Saint Mary's College where I have apparently a retrospective going to fill up pretty big room visitors gallery with a retrospective might work. From the early days of Mac paint from the really early stuff that's playing around with all the way up to the stuff you see you on the show. Thanks again -- Daniel for -- and of life -- name wrong I'm sorry it's you know. The heart that the figure out how to say these things. But done he gave us a great image what they're back here. And done all our our pixel perfect are shot on his green screen edges here just -- there's nothing there his dream. And control room over that they going -- and -- putting your artwork and your artwork could be there. It could be right there and that's being so remember to email me your designs to bury it revision3.com. Your background should be 1280 by 720 pixels. And -- as a JPEG. And those pixel. It's not work it's plain. Hope to see you next week."

Great new features in CS4. Thanks for showing an added feature to the 3D animation. Would have never thought to use a movie to for the earth. Hope new tips and tricks are comming.

Thanks for the episode.
I was just wondering if you could do the same using smart objects. What I mean is instead of creating a separate movie file for the earth could you just set the animation to a diferent speed than you are planning to do so for the moon and then wrap it up in a smart object? Not sure if the merging would then work but I am gonna give it a go.
So this is what I like about pixel Perfect, the good ideas that Burt gives to you that you can then go and experiment with.
I'll let you know if it worked.
Cheers.

Final render
Hello, great show.I've come so far as Bert let us see, but I can't find the way to make the final movie, where the earth and moon spin around. When I use animation, all of my clips change when I try to change just one. When I just try to export, I get a very little file (7kb). I watched the show a few times, but I can't make out where to begin the last step.
Can someone tell me where to start the final steps.
Greetings, Michael
p.s.
Bert, keep on making these shows, you are doing it very well.

some help and advice.
If you have a very klow end raphics card you might find that some of the 3d abil;ity's won't work for you, remember that it utilizes your card and GPU, so some of the rendering might not work for example.
When you come to saving the video you can do a couple of things. You can save as a GIF via the save for web and devices option in the fikle menu but this is not recommended for a video of this nature as it would be a very large file and might take a long time to save it and apply settings in said save as box, if at all.
So tyou render thwe video out via the export options in the file menu just like Bert said.#
If you done have the flash video encoder installed (comes with cs3 suite not cs4) then you might not be able to render it out as FLV format.
If you choose quicktime you wanna makwe sure all the settings are correct so look at all the options in the render video box to make sure you get it right.

This aint a bump.
I have tested my thoery of using smart objects instead of having to render the first movie out as Quicktime and it does work and indeed saves some time.
So you have your map X3 and you set the animation for 5 secs (as example) and then convert to smart object and then create the 3D shape (Sphere) from that smart object and you get the same result in less time.
