Create a Realistic Beer Bottle
Monday, February 9th, 2009 running time 21:41
Design a custom, ice-cold beer bottle using Adobe Photoshop. Bert demonstrates how to create realistic effects for the bottle, beer, and condensation with simple layer styles.
In Bert's New York Times Square piece, he created realistic beer bottles and shows you how in this episode!
Create a beer bottle shape in Illustrator:
Due to the ease of use in Adobe Illustrator, we start there to create a beer bottle shape using the pen tool. An effective way to create this shape is to draw half of bottle, select all points, and reflect them across the vertical axis. Use Command J to join the end points, creating a single object. Copy and paste your shape into Photoshop as a path.
Apply color and glow in Photoshop:
In a new Photoshop layer, fill with a nice yellowish beer color. Apply a large sized Inner Glow with the Layer Style palette. Change the glow color to a deep, darker orange. Separate the layer effects into it's own layer (Layer Style > Create Layer) and apply another dark Inner Glow to the original layer for more tonality.
Add glare and shadows to the bottle:
To add a glare to the bottle, use a large, soft-edged brush and add white strokes to the bottle in a new layer. Bring down the opacity of these glares and change the layer style to "Screen". The same concept is applied to create dark areas on the bottle.
Fill the bottle with beer:
Fill the beer bottle path in a new layer with the color grey. Create a shape to specify where the liquid exists and apply a layer mask. Again, Bert applies an inner glow to make the bottle's neck appear empty.
We create a brown colored path at the top of the liquid and apply a mask to hide everything that falls outside of the bottle shape. Apply shadowing to give the liquid a realistic feel.
Apply condensation to bottle:
Create a new layer to hold the moisture texture. In Brush presets, turn off Shape Dynamics and increase the Size Jitter. Give some spacing to the tip and apply a large Scatter value. Then, simply brush in the bottle area with the color white. This will look like little, white drops. Turn off the color (fill opacity = 0 in Layer Styles) because we want the beer's color to come through from underneath. Bert adds a low-opacity drop shadow, some beveling, inner shadow, and smudging to add finishing touches to the moisture.
Your bottle should now be complete, and you can add your very own label!

And how I created it it's kind of like something's we've seen before but it's always nice to see things and different context of source that makes sense that. Soccer shirt you right now there is he."
" Current state of of times square right now -- he's done and this is Hillary has filed this is not the actual 25 foot file of the below two -- show. On this little tiny laptop I'm working off of but you can see that I've added a lot more stuff since the last time you saw this resume and -- percent view. And just kind of start way out here at the end but we have this little. For forests store over here. The digital storefront got a couple of bottles of the stuff in there were kind of start walking across here Andy has the other big Toys 'R' Us. In the middle that I kind of showed you and a few. Weeks ago and has sent the part where I started doing. Things it is late and we got this hoping look there I am right there it is my sister in law mind. -- if my daughter my son my nephews. They're all over he's going to be family members and they conceive of defections and other things happening and all these. Things happening here is an hour want to do is zoom in on these little. Corona bottles right there undecideds are -- building has been partially obstruct these breakthrough in it could be other signs and things on frontier. But need to see that we just started doing the the actual. Billboard things now these corona bottles that's what I want to discuss today's show how these were created. Now. Basically because of ease of use an illustrator I pretty much started that in illustrator. Right here. First of the thing to being able to reflect a a path -- certainly do it here in in illustrator so don't let -- create my little bottle. So -- could go on here and start that was shape -- appear for my shift key down constrained is a little -- but the top it would come in here like that. And come down to about like that. Go round this little. Shape here comes straight down to about here. And -- little cruel but like that banks are now. I can -- a select."
" All and is that -- reflection thing I was talking about the hacking going here and does reflect the write about it's it right there. Now I'm option -- in the tech giants like at the controls for SM vertical axis give me a copy and makes a copy in the aside. If I did that first up at the duplicate the pad then -- the pat and there's no quick way of connecting at the click on one end point click on the other was here I can simply just select the two end points. But there and hit command today. And I joins them automatically led down here how to select the bottom two points and undo it -- so that these bottom two points there and join those in there I have my. Basic shape my bottle and our windows on the select that. I am going to do it in. Photoshop someone to copy it I just copied it and go back over the Photoshop and Photoshop element creating new file. Manage your files and automatically reflect the contents. Of that vector that's sitting in memory right now. So it comes into that particular size want to look at an -- here you see that it's just under four inches by just under ten. I'm gonna go ahead and make this a whole four point five inches. And we'll make this eleven inches just to give us a little room right now set to send it to be the -- if I was actually working on campaigning. I would set that to 480 which is what I'm usually working at -- just RGB. That click okay and there's a blank file right so. Open up the full screen there and Google ministers state faced. Paste and what I'm gonna paste a path. I didn't assign any color and illustrators and -- and it as a vector as a path click okay and there's my path so now. In -- later. Create a layer here and go to that path and let's pick a nice -- that's to say we get a a nice kind of a warm image. Kind of be Jewish comedy like this yellow. That looks about right about like that and I go ahead and say -- that. There it is and I would have out basic model. It's not gonna go in there and do all kinds of of things that it's so. -- going to do is I'm gonna go here and I don't -- and give it a layer style so I go to my layers. And I get this the leaders. And that's gonna give it's a nice kind of round this to us regularly a inner glow the end of -- argument is -- along the edges here right so we're going there and make it much bigger but that's not the color I want what does light. Yellow I want to nice deep. Kind of an orange color a deep color like about like that. Click okay which are now disappear because being glow would set the screen -- he said that to multiply and I get that nice deep brown in there. And make that much bigger. Given a nice big eight college's site that there go up that's looking good. And maybe just that had bigger. Click OK and I got this nice rich color going on in there. Now we're at another one right in there little darker. Just give it another little hint of of commonality now that's the latest -- want to do is I'm gonna go in there and done it's called his bottle. So we know would talk about yet. -- And now right inside of this and say it might in both of my bottle so I'm doing I'm gonna separate that. Latest styles and Colby is -- thousand layer and they create there. For now there's an inner. Glow rights and I'm gonna double click on a bottle again and say give it another inner glow. Now this I'm gonna go with a deep deep brown. Like that. Almost black really deep brown to -- the multiply. And does that Megan now one little -- and I'm getting this other kind of amber looking color along that it. Just a little bigger but like that click OK some NASA did it does nice amber tone going on to my little bottle here. I have those who happening now the label the label. Can be anything you've created illustrator or scam on whatever you want to do and -- will come in later without going to worry about the they would just concern also in the show. With the bottle itself. The label. Do whatever you want you know and these theater. And you seaside or whatever you wanted to do it right so. Which is concern hassles that. Bottle and I you know is that now we have these different tone now -- happened on the edges -- from that rich yellow in the middle to these -- amber oranges and on the site. Given that follow the more of the depth this is great to be 3-D. This week's show we looked at. 3-D here we're actually creating the three dimensional effect in the -- So let's -- and and we still got that yellow I'm gonna go in there and make it that a little later so make it almost like a a light tone like that and you may mean later. I mean they're right over here I'm gonna take my paintbrush. -- to infect you know what let's make it white. We'll start with a white and got myself that brush Telesis. The study -- brushes and operations on opens that is going to say. Precious and did our brushes so let's turn off that so we don't have a nice. Solid toned down just kind of give it a little. Click right there shift. -- down there -- I got this nice little. -- going on there so now. I'm gonna add a little one appear to sort of make my brush a little smaller and going to go Google click. And a little click affair we've got this little. -- happening there somehow I'm going there and -- little bit so good that you've got simpler just to soften those up -- open up a little bit. That like Batman looks good and I also want to go in there and that's changed the mode that guides the screen. And bring and the capacity of a bit. Says just becomes a little bit of highlight right on the edge of the bottle. Now understanding on the other side here I'm gonna go in create another layer. And I get my papers and I want to pick a color from this amber tones in here but like that. -- would that sound. I'm gonna go here make my birth bigger. And it just kinda hinted there -- It down here so I got this dark tone happening in there -- this one I'm gonna bring down to -- a little bit. Justice just a little hint of atonement there and I might even wanna bring -- towards the middle there. About like that. For now this could actually give a little. Mask second going to effect the pain away some of these towns along the top here and get my big question to bring down a passing for brush. And just kind of very lightly hit it in a couple of spots just it becomes is really soft kind of -- fading kind of the tone and did you see -- in their life."
" All right so that's looking good so now. In layer on top but this whole thing I'm gonna get my little. Path that I have from before is my path and and it -- this -- a great. It makes great tone going on but like that and go ahead and fill that path but that. So right so now what have we created now don't go in here and that's get rid and it's and a hundred give that layer. If that layer mask as well. I'm gonna say give it a mask and he's gonna select the negotiate with pic my -- to -- the new shape right about here like this. The shape like so. And -- around here. And I get this whole thing selected and it's just play with this guy a little bit. We have to that's that thing down pat -- that that looks good -- Fella turned into a selection. NASA's it selective when I go over here and give that they -- a mask. It's going to give me -- Okay let's go in there and there we see that that bottom part of our bottle has just disappeared give me this little light colored one appear which I cannot give that a little. Inner glow."
" And are gonna use a dark --"
" And said that the multiply. So again and play around that the -- sides right up there but like that. Click okay and it would see that we now start to have to bottle that's filled with something. So now what I could do one more thing here would be to go here and just create -- shape let's say we. Get up until. Have to struggle shape right along the top here which which is going like this -- it goes up. For those who edges come in here you go. Up and around it and go down like that so it's got this little kind of a shape to it and -- to skip. -- technical in there and they could give that nice little curve and a new layer on top but this whole thing here I'm gonna -- near and that's fill that with a makes the brown so we got this brown down here ready so that's just it does brown right there and that dual -- we're gonna go ahead and fill that path. With that shape. So there's this little brown K so now we have that."
" So what are -- to do now. For them to turn my bottle by bottle -- into a selections I go back to my. Thing here and I say good until a bottle and there's a bottle and going to. Hold down my command key and click on the preview iPhone which turns that into a selection go back up to that little. Drip on the top there right there and they give it -- mask which who automatically hide those portions of that. -- thing that fell outside the area of selection so great they're not going there and give that guy a little bit of layer -- to give that a little Babylon boy sees that this is that little. Kind of a tone that -- that. And maybe you could to bring down sides will bring up the depth to to give -- stronger tone that's me to some golden. Yellow. That is that that makes the rich tone going on in there punch up the shadow part click okay and there we see that we have this. Bottle now. This moisture into one on. In the painting so and that was gonna create one more layer. And in this layer here let's go in here and get a nice white brush. Which right now is gonna be -- circle that there's a circle which does that -- even bring up that. Capacity and it does that okay so now let's go look at our brush engine. Which we just opened and there it is. So maternal my shape dynamics and it's an even -- but I am going to control the sizes of those and go in there and -- sized jitters so there's different sizes and that the minimum size and go back to my brush tip and give them some spacing. I guess and spacing between them they're going to my scattering which and we -- on both Texas scattered. About like that there ago. Go back to shape dynamics and it's set up another minimum don't get too small. Okay so now. Not that we have that happening in this -- here I'm gonna go ahead and draw all these little drops. There bunch of little drops. -- and go back to that layer and that there I'm gonna say. Give it a drug they're stuff right off the -- get off. The color no color. We don't want the color -- through from underneath so take a way to fill passage which could sort of color and now and it's donating a little drop shadow. That's a little drop shadow which images. Reduced to. This is a little bit and banana capacity of its its not so strives one little hints of drop shadow in -- and at a given little lump in her shadow. Right instead a dominant change it to an overlay -- is gonna have a little bit of an effect these tests that little effect on the on the beer underneath the site or whatever it is and doing little bubbling boils down punch up the highlights on that. Get that I like really strong and soften it up. Make little smaller to such as kind of falls into that little area and it changed its -- change that to a white. Because I don't want that dark shadow when there I want that to intensify the color and -- So black won't white will slow -- change to mode to college God's -- get these nice little tones and there. Like that for now you could see that I have all these nice food drops the war was that are outside. No problem want to take my idea smudge tool. The most much tool here. And I will get a little closer to -- was gonna happen next. They did -- it was my smudge tool and I just kind of pushed these guys around like that date tonight if suddenly like. It's doing this this -- is just kind of tripping up. -- baton David active scripting and this -- just kind of forming up from from above. That guy and -- guys just kind of pouring down from decided to buy also we should out of few of them just get this little pole so that they start to look like they're dripping down from from above. And who can kind of wave it up a little bit. Right so. And -- to see that now we have this nice little. Bottle of a beer cider or whatever with -- all the little -- he's on it and you can add your own label and make it look however you want now in case detaining. There it is back here I'll open up the actual bottle. And here's the actual bottle itself this is -- looks to get in real close and you can see that it's got all these. Nice little drops of water and all the things happening -- effects today just gave it give it extra highlight right in there. And so on this see through thing between new -- on top as the line they've -- its -- of the show. So there you see it and there's a current status and that's where they fall line again this is low -- coming closer you are gonna see much but. That's where is going and future shows you can see different parts and it's. If there's anything you'd like to see on the show email me at -- and revision3.com.
Also you can check out the forms that revision3.com. Forward slash forms we can join discussions about the show. My latest book. Who wouldn't mind having an episode of Pixelperfect where Bert just works on this kind of stuff at his own pace? It would definitely be interesting.
