Chris Orwig, a photographer and educator at the Brooks Institute joins Bert Monroy this week at Photoshop World in Las Vegas to guest host. Learn the simple secrets to color enhancements and vintage effects.

Create a Vintage Image Effect

Chris Orwig demonstrates the vintage effect with another photo of a man at the Channel Islands.

He uses Images > Adjust > Shadows/Highlights to fix the lighting, then converts the image to black and white. Contrast and toning come next, all in adjustment layers.

Add more color than you need, then turn the adjustment layer's blending mode to soft light. This creates subtle color.

Next, Chris adds a Gaussian Noise filter, and then integrates the effect into the image by using a luminance mask and lowering the opacity of the mask.
