Back to Kindergarten with Photoshop
Monday, May 5th, 2008 running time 19:30
Bert goes back to Kindergarten this week to show us how to create a childlike paper illustration using Adobe Photoshop.
Bert's childlike drawing is no easy feat. Bert uses various Photoshop elements in order to create a very simplistic drawing. First, Bert forms background colors (that are later merged with shapes) by using the line tool, noise filter, facet filter and various patterns. Using the lasso tool, Bert creates a ground on the floor. Using the pen tool, Bert creates cutout trees. And finally, using the circle tool, Bert creates the sun and its rays. The paper illustration pops out with layer effects(drop shadow and bevel/emboss) and the burn and dodge tool. Bert also adds a "Hi" using the polygonal lasso tool and unique brush stroke.
Don't forget to design and e-mail Bert a background for our green screen! Please send a jpg design with size 1280x720 pixels.

" Just -- with a yellow and pick yellow color kind of like a legal paper ballot that click okay and -- and that. Then go to pick if you look at legal pad dateline's a comic it -- very light blue -- it got light blue. I like that and I'm going to draw a line -- get my line tool right here. Line tool and a limited set it to pixels that there -- that third choice to draw a line right across there's a line. So now I'm gonna do it on the select. This of peace to say that. Now -- answer I think is of that enough space here. And above to create the space between lines is yes I'm gonna create a pattern out of this thing going here and say define. -- we'll call this legal pad. And I guess had beckoned. Kindergarten I can't spell there ago click OK. So now I could deflect that and I'm going to fill that they announced. Did eight shift immediate. And going to go and I say to the pattern. And which pattern there it is right there and I don't look like much is -- so he added that single line pixel of the overall shape that I had. So let's say use that and click okay and now you see we have a sheet of legal paper there. That's about let's create a -- of the quality yellow and all that they are yeah. Rights and how to create another layer here and I wouldn't call this one green. This is going to be green construction paper. So logo and and find a nice deep green. And green color like about that. And I -- they were that green and I'm gonna give it to a little bit of noise. Just a little pat and that's of noise. And maybe a little less -- enough for. Manifested that just gonna bonus they insulate. Fast which is just gonna get that nice -- tech not a duplicate that duplicate that one right here. And then that set going to just that I'm gonna call it red. And what I'm going to do is I'm gonna go into my hue saturation. And terrific color rise. Bring it into a red punch up to saturation. Make a really strong maybe lighten it up just a little bit like that. Click okay and now have my red paper. -- Those -- the three color papers -- great to be using to create this really was seen. It you know what going to be one more. -- one more layer here this political grounds. Police have brown. All right so. I'm gonna go in here and -- I'm gonna pick some callers. Actually you know -- gonna pick on which has returned as the black and white. And give it a filter and go here to render. Clouds and hold down my option key so that it's going to give me strong clouds a lot of thought. Of contrast there and it's display one more time -- that the remorse even. So I'm gonna do here is I'm gonna go into another little guy -- going to stylized and say and bolts. And boss so it created this little kind of -- here this kind of like a brown envelope. Click okay. That looks good I'm gonna go to my hue saturation again color eyes it bring it into a nice kind of a warm. Color like that. Being of the saturation a bit little more like in the grounds there ago that's gonna be out ground. -- did -- click okay now we're gonna brown. Now going to create this case. So let's just look at the background by itself. It's my option -- alt key press on the -- background it turned everybody also automatically. So I'm gonna go in here and start creating some shapes. Now. I'm gonna have some ground."
" Right so does this movies -- over a little bit and out with my lasso tool they should as a feather are gonna draw little ground area right here. Now you wanted to lose you want to lose you are being very tight on this this number. A little kid is supposed to be doing it's okay it's supposed to be doing its Sony obliterate here political all the ground."
" And going to go ahead and -- I would back. -- So now the topic is that intrigues. NASA trees song gonna go in here and again. Very loosely -- my pencil. We're gonna make believe that. This is scissors and which is gonna create some shapes -- logo in here. And to click and this and go in and come down and in and over and in and down and over. And come over here and out. And it has created is this kind of look like a very loose kind of look pine tree right there. And we want another one soon create another little guy a smaller tree right here and you don't want to be too precise on this because remember it's a little -- with scissors. All right. And which is gonna go in here create all these little shapes and there's history. And we might want to just because we're grown up who put that it'll clean there price and how we have those two ships. So I'm gonna do now is only -- turn on him selective in a new layer. Which political trees. I'm gonna go and hear and feel that path. -- All right so now we got all listed stuff happening here -- say that path -- in case we need those. For now. And go back over here and it's channel those -- and I'm not and how we're gonna draw a little circle for the sun again. We're not gonna select the perfect circles is being caught up by a little kid -- is gonna draw below sort by this does not too too perfect. Just like that. You later we're gonna call it sun. I'll go ahead and fill that with black. And there were black. There it is and of course on this and then there ago. So now the sun needs some race. Says the word is right now and with a pencil. And create some race and again. You want to be kind of move through this you don't want to be very neat. Because it's just okay cutting stuff. Thanks those those going to create this these little -- And it can be kind of funky. And all over the place. That one -- one. That's he's gone back before creating all these little race to us like that writes and now. Separately here let's let's take that path. -- and even have to put in a separate there yet we'll do that later this take that path and bring it over here. Okay and we're in that layer with the sun. Right there -- bill that passed with black. All right so now we have all out basic shapes. Have a basic shapes so when I'm going to do -- one more statement. But -- do -- now as when go to look at elevators so we have the ground here right someone turn underground paper and in the clip that -- bring it down here on top of the ground. And are doing little clip option -- between those two and out of ground has still been down there it emerged that down. Emerged that down because that's that's the finished piece. Okay now we have -- trees here. Some of the sun there's no trees did not green paper -- and bring the green paper down above these guys and click. There now that's -- Now when it emerged that down. Now what's important here is -- to separate these trees Basilan there was an episode select this little guy as they sent to a new layer. The cut. -- It is a son. And these little rays and there's our legal paper -- go ahead and go and click those two like that. -- If you down they say that and then what I would do is take the sun and separate that into its own layer -- layer."
" Case and that everything that its own later so now I didn't move -- gonna turn out or select when it automatically click on -- lyrics with selected. -- I could take this guy put the Senate there. Bring this guy right behind it except. The papers look exactly right so I would think my son there's this guy here and doing rotate on the which is doing the rotation on. Not like that that looks good it. And the guy in back here we'll do a little rotation. Another way that's to rotate they this way. That looks good and they want to bring that went down a little bit and I think the stock I put him right there so now. -- legal papers have a thin paper is and it's very offensive when you clue. It kind of shows through such as did a new layer on top of this Olympic might paint brush. -- take a small brush as anybody 35 that looks good who sent this to normal. And I would choose a weird. In here I would turn off my shape dynamics but analysts say. -- it is to it does so concentrate the -- outside edges and kind of make it. Transparent in between -- go here and just kinda took a couple of times it is that this. Because I that I don't think that that mayor now that has created that there and I put that in a sloth like mode. And who tried with very little. Hard like. And then -- capacity. This and it's it will not that much. Says is the glue coming through the paper -- is coming right through paper -- emerged that down into the sun. -- Now going to take -- on and given a layer style -- drop shadow. But can bring in any capacity a little bit. And then give -- a -- your -- then voted on bush sentiment decides real small. One I don't just won a little tiny edge there. Click okay and it's crow the little bit so want to do it gonna take a burn tool and I just gonna. And large a little bit and it's gonna hit that edge of the paper just a little bit right in -- like that. And I think the the dodge tool and looked like and decide that's a little bit. There's just a little different color. Now that effect that we applied there we're gonna apply that to the other guys and an option click and drag it down here to not that has the same effect. Now -- on -- part of trees here but state history. And move them over here in front of this guy stick this guy and put him back here and we'll put this guy a little bit in front. Like that will copy those effects into those two. That a copy be affecting the here. And be effective to -- Rights and now. The last thing we need. A little message. So -- a very politely and going to take my political tool here all right I'm gonna go in here and just -- been. Little speech. Now what I'm not typing and I'm actually created and again you want to be rough with a little -- cutting things out of paper. Right there I'm going to shift because they're gonna add to this thing the little side. There's. And I'm gonna shift could -- add a little circle appear and again they shouldn't be too perfect so now."
" appeared on -- but -- I'm going to go ahead and fill that with black. And that the rift. Would just like that it and it's -- that down. And we'll just give that same effect."
" Right -- like that now the final thing the final thing is this guy. Now I've got a paper for that we have a -- paper we're going to do here is gonna pick a nice blue. I'd say we -- actually its first create a brush. So motor brushes I've been creating a list -- doesn't create some very some of them to be a rough brush. So let's make sure nothing selected and going to go in here and out. Meet my five in my -- small. And to draw a bunch of little dots right there. Are close together. I. Select that. And -- and in the background I'm gonna say define brush."
" So we can throw that away. And now. In the background and it's pick a nice blue. That's they would pick this. Do here let's go with the light of -- yeah it's a good note and I think that brush. It might be President Bush is at the bottom there is which right now does that. So going to do is go to our brush engine. We're gonna bring down -- spacing. So it's just about solid Baghdad. Increases diameter a bit and it's a little bigger it it's looking like that and use that -- edges effect. And then back here I'm just gonna very likely just kind of draw a couple of bunch of -- if go to kind of a loose paint the -- is campaigning on top of it. Okay so there's this kind of looks to -- all over the place. Those who they are today we just vote and -- it when the wrong there. Great episode but, as usual, the production staff did a crap job. Thank you for runing this episode.

Well I'm assuming since this episode didn't have a preview of next week, this is the end of a bunch...

Calm down man, there is a new batch coming out so let's give them a chance to take our crit. They have been improving this show as it goes on and I'm sure they'll fix it up.
For the show, this one was great! The wet edges brush option is pretty cool, very useful. I also like creating the paper textures... that has so many applications.
Great job Bert and team!

I am giving them a chance but we don't even get a response from them on the forums saying they're going to take into consideration our suggestions so how are we supposed to think and react?
By the way I would advise you against ever telling someone to calm down over a post because it's really hard to tell what their tone of voice is and what their motivation is. Some people get really pissed off when someone tells them to calm down. Just FYI.
I look forward to them fixing the issues we've addressed. Or maybe at the very least acknowledging that they're read them or even took them into consideration.

I see your point and yes, acknowledgement would be nice to see even if they don't take our sugesstions, I'm 100% with you on that one.
I said calm down because your posts seem very angry and accusatory towards the production team who are giving us this content. Crit is good and is needed for these kinds of things to improve and I think you make very valid points but at the same time we, as users, should try and be polite as we deliver our critisism. Saying they did a 'crap job' and then thanking them for 'ruining the episode' is not polite at all. You just seemed very sarcastic and negative... that's all. I'm sorry if you got angry at my post, I got upset at the way you were talking about the prod staff so I wanted to voice my feelings.
