Ludacris Skin Softening: Before & After

We begin with a photo of Rene Anderson in Hawaii, then see the image after processing. Also see a before and after photo of Ludacris! To do this softening technique, create a copy of the image in a new layer, then apply the Surface Blur filter. Use a radius of 10 and a threshold of 100 (or double for both). Then, create a layer mask on the blurred image. The mask will be filled with black, which hides the layer. Simply paint the mask white in desired areas to reveal the blur over skin tones only. We won't apply this painting to detailed areas like the eyes and hair. To retain detail in the skin, turn down the opacity of your brush.

Controlling Color: Fix Sunburned Skin

Learn Eddie Tapp's techniques on color and tonal control. We take the example of a sunburned man's photo. To lessen the redness in his skin, open up the color adjustments and change individual CMYK colors as an adjustment layer. Make sure you have a color calibrated monitor when using this technique. Add a layer mask to the adjustment layer, and paint white on the areas of skin only.

" Telling others what kind of stuff -- Well I started my photography studio back in 1973. This before you were born -- hit it's. But I've had I'm really wonderful career doing all kinds of assignments from. A background for the new set for debut SP television. To working with the fashion actors and models. Has just been wonderful career. Of course some of doing portraits scenic and passwords and well. Look at -- shows that I now sometimes we approach an assignment. And we're not sure exactly what we're gonna do. But we do something that we haven't done really before. And I can't explain why I did it this way except. I know that there's no right way or wrong way to do anything in Photoshop necessarily they're simply different many ways. Many different ways to do kind of thing. My take on that is less take the time -- take the objective. Become what with something that works for it that way. And that's happened to me recently on assignment are working with an image of Ludacris. They wanna -- model to have a very soft skin tone. And I did something completely different but it worked and look beautiful and adapting that as one of the things I'm going to teach. As a matter of fact I haven't -- it -- this was the first time. I'm revealing this technique. I discovered a few. It caught -- saucepan technique that goes among the other techniques that I teach such as. The back to the futures -- enhancement -- soft focus filter. Dream blow all those other techniques that I hate so we kind of have a formula. A particular. Particular all of these come kind of work in conjunction. Sometimes. When technique isn't good for another bit this one is make kind of do the same things so. That sounds confusing as it sounded that's happened about dual dream go and ideas -- right and I gonna. Now local search dreamcoat technique that this is basically things that you name things it's what I mean things -- and Google does names are probably fine PDF files there direction right now to do yeah that's -- teaching these things were. Sewage to back okay what that there. But this is a picture. Remainder since she's a beautiful model we've just photographed him why and this has -- a -- before. And after report. This technique well. Before and after Moscow with this image and ludicrous. This beautiful model. And actually this is quite simple what we're going to do. And what we're gonna start out doing is going to be. Create a duplicate layer. With -- image itself type the con commander control. You know we're simply going to filter. Blur when you something called surface -- And I'm brand new doing this technique so what have discovered with this so far. Is to use the settings of the radius. Ten. And 100. Or to use the radius settings of 2200. Then because I'm just kind of starting this kind of technique that subject to change in future. Right now those settings work beautifully well it depends on. How much of the surface how -- now is. This particular file is say. Reduced size -- to bring down the road here some -- is 100. With that tend radiance of a door at high risk file print and those figures would be -- like the twentieth to 22 countries. And as with all of it techniques that key it's all about landing. That to me is the most powerful thing about becoming proficient with Photoshop is learning how to land. Let's see if we can blend this and to give us the correct let me of course as you could see them all image. It's blurring the entire image -- we're gonna do with this will go and create a layer mask. By clicking on add layer mask icon let's hold down the option key. First which should be popped in windows. In as we create a layer mask it fills it with blacks we've just hidden. That entire filter layer. We're we're gonna do now must take the breast or white paint. And we're gonna come back and paint on her -- time. With white paint that's the compression tool white paint him where to start about 20%. Capacity. -- and I would suggest using. A smaller capacity and do multiple brush strokes in certain areas just to bring back the effect because it. You can bring back too much actually that we don't wanna do that we just want to create multiple brush strokes. To bring back an absolutely beautiful. Flawless skin tone. And this is just for the skin tones so what we're not going to do we're not gonna paint on me. -- Are -- here this is just for the skin tones and we get near as sensitive area. We will get a smaller brush. So in paying closer to guys here. And this is basically the technique I'm gonna turn off the visibility -- kind of a layer so you can see the before. And after effects itself -- that. -- that's of the screen that was so before yet just -- a beautiful skin tone enhancement and actually do a little bit of that -- Ludacris as well but. Not quite so much of that capacity. So about the a pastor said to 10%. In just a slight work over here. We'll soften the scan and make it -- list. Of course. The beauty of that is since terrorists such a low low -- is that you are softening without completely eliminating. Any wars and other features that will be scanned absolutely not and that's exactly what this is just softens skin -- just a little bit. And -- no surprises here you know how sometimes we can. Is create a filtered effectively. C and reproduction we have surprise there we didn't realize there's no surprises here. This -- well it reproduces it extremely well -- it's a very fast technique. To enhance the skin -- didn't. -- about four different methods of skin tone enhancement and this is the woman just starting take news and I'm calling it east -- here."

" It's good that you don't happen. You realize how would that be great -- some -- to do that to myself. Not as it is really nice suit it I could see it the results very -- without printing. Actually monitored very clear. And -- to soften up those areas and just gave it that makes little glow to it yes. Yes thank you. Quality be all right there is also the fact that it in a -- it also gives you the ability to. To bring some of it back -- and it's that non destructive qualities of of this technique is what's important because they people go in there and actually. Work over the original shot where you're working over a duplicate of the background. So at any time you gonna was pulled back and and and restart or whatever but soften the effect so that's that's a really good point."

" Well actually a very typical thing happened with -- particular client. I'm we have a image of ludicrous by himself that I did the same technique works so well this one week later the next project him. They wanted just him. And I did the same type of treatment because this worked so successfully. And I'm basically overdid it so few days later word came down just a little bit too much. I opened up my network fault took you passed a damn about 50% been."

This will create an adjustment layer using. Select a color. -- as you know we're working and RGB. File but this is a cyan magenta -- controllers here so it's just the opposite RGB. Of course we have black as well but with a sunburn what I'm gonna do is add some science. May be reduced the magenta. It just a little video. And that's when you're doing this type of work. You really want to have a properly calibrated display yeah -- see that actual carrier can put it on any surprises later -- anything but we can make me. Tiny bit of black but what we've done successfully here we've taken that sunburned look let's just turn off the visibility icon. That's for him after. And that's that's really nice skin -- but one thing that has happened it's affected the entire image so it's quite -- this mask with black. I'll just use the short key command delete. I am sorry to say I was a little underwhelmed with this week's episode.

Mr Tapp, whom I now doubt is a wonderful photographer stated that he was introducing a special new technique for skin softening that he had invented and then proceeded to carry out a very simple layer duplication, blur and mask reveal technique which I have seen many times already in tutorial videos and books.

Similarly his technique for controlling colours was OK but really not new, special or not repeated in many other tutorials. Burt looked a little uncomfortable in trying to make the best of what appeared to be not much at all.

What makes Pixel Perfect special is Burt giving us an insight into his skills, techniques and enthusiasm to create clever images or fragments from nothing at all; us mere mortals are then left to try and emulate the master craftsman by playing with his techniques.

This is not meant as a rant or criticism of Burt or Revision 3 as I love watching the show weekly and have learnt a great deal from it over the years. This is the first time I have written critically about the show, so please accept this in the spirit it is written of warm affection and disappointment that I know and you know it was a bit weak.

Regards
Vern

I agree with the message above. Although I've been watching this show since it came to revision3, I've never actually used any of the techniques as I'm not an avid photoshop user. But watching Bert creating fantastic pictures is interesting to watch.
