Create Fabrics in Photoshop
Sunday, April 26th, 2009 running time 16:59
Learn how to create textiles and fabrics using Adobe Photoshop.
Create denim
- Apply a solid light blue to your canvas background.
- Create a new layer with a fill of 50% grey.
- Apply a filter to the 50% grey layer: Sketch > Halftone Pattern. Choose 1 as the size, and 20 for the contrast with the pattern type: Line.
- Apply another filter: Pixelate > Mezzotint. Type: Fine Dots. This creates a texture. Duplicate this layer, and rotate it to 45%.
- In Layer 1 (horizontal texture), apply a blur with a radius of 1.
- Change Layer 1's layer type to Soft Light.
- Rotate the layer with the 45 degree angle to a layer type: Multiply.
- Create a new layer, then choose Merge Visible from the Layers window. This merges your visible artwork without discarding the original artwork layered below.
- To create the bends and folds in your fabric, don't use the liquify filter because it will blur your image and you'll lose your texture. Instead, use displace or warp. These will work much better.
Create fine threaded linen
- This fabric is created from a pattern. In a new canvas with a black background, and new layer, create two thin vertical strips (threads) and fill with a light grey color. Duplicate this layer and rotate 90 degrees.
- Apply a dark colored inner glow (blend mode: Multiply) to both layers to give the appearance of depth.
- Add a drop shadow to the top layer so it appears to be sitting on top of the bottom layer.
- Break the styles into their own layers so we can manipulate the styles separately from the image. Layer > Layer Style > Create Layers
- Use clipping to apply drop shadowing only to intersecting thread areas.
- Erase where necessary to complete the weaved effect.
- To add extra texture, you can optionally add some extra tones to intersecting areas.
- Create a pattern of the intersecting weave area: Edit > Define Pattern.
- The pattern is saved, so you can discard all of your working layers, only leaving the black background layer.
- Fill the whole canvas in a new layer with the pattern, and it appears to be a detailed fabric!

Forward slash pixel perfect and yes. Remember to type in that WWW. When using this code. Right now -- that -- show. Guys have done about some text out right so you're gonna screen right now. We see these current state of by the times -- that I've been working on for forever and there's does some fabrics in here fact is going to be a lot of better ones that's I've don't know people -- up. But visit everybody up here read this area where this guy's hands. Up here and what appear -- is a little window with a curtain up there. Now this is not the high -- as the lowest file. But if I come in here effect is to show you that it's. Not high reds that go in here and just zoom in on the though denim pants up there -- yet not much detail and the the window up here to get have been there."
" And not much detail there either okay so. I have here the actual files. Here -- the denim pants and on resuming now you can see that we have some really nice though texted there of them. Genes there. And and we have this little fabric here. Now we get a real close to see that it does in fact have all the little stitching that goes with. A material of this type -- feel a little reading in the curtains in there. So don't have to think that I'm talking about. Today I'm gonna talk about first as to what is down. It's gonna create a -- now this actually is an altered and a good friend my Corey barker came up with. Corey -- is one of my favorite artists out there he came up with this -- so we created for your right here. I -- and you file. And I'm gonna -- and you pick a nice blue collar for might down to be so let's say we picked this up. But as David Cameron opened my eyes light blue is gonna become like defeated -- kind of them I'm gonna go landfill that area with that color. Disease could go keyboard which is option delete old back space on -- PC and -- that would that blue collar. Not a pretty new -- So I can't optimism would create a new there go ahead of -- that there with a 50% gray. Click okay that they are now -- with a 50% gray it. So now. To that -- I'm gonna apply filters are gonna come over here and I'm gonna go down here to sketch and going to choose half tone pattern. Okay here comes. My image here in the right layer yes I'm in the great there so -- and say filtered. Sketch. Have -- pattern."
" And I'm going to pick a take on that that's gonna be really good -- have been nice size down to one of any contrast down to zero and I wanna set to suffer. For line and set this up to line. -- an -- line I'm gonna click okay. And I've got this pattern right on top of it right. I would give it another filter. Right there while I'm still then want to go in here and give -- another one on the pixel -- I'm gonna choose me hesitant. And admit that it is gonna break it up you see that had to set the fine that's right now which is what I want."
" And I got this nice little -- going on there I'm gonna duplicate this duplicate this layer. And I have two of them the second one to me pull back just a little bit sad to see my work area I think that's going on going to rotated. And I go and then go transform. Rotate. And -- hold down my shift key to constrain it and it rotated a 45 degree angle just like that. Click okay so now this area here is what I'm gonna be working not the overall. Edge here now if you want this fabric to be the entire. Image that you have to work on it creates a fabric in an image that's. Bigger so that we can come in there and neither should get down or just crop the area that you want which in this case will be justice area red side here. So that it had these two layers but these. Textures I would -- and start changing the most for these two layers. I'm gonna go in here and did not later one that's -- scary I'm gonna get little parlor just a little gauzy ambler. Of one just once just to soften it up just a little bit click okay and going to change its mode. I changed its vote to soft light. Then go on here and say soft -- to see how that who's gonna show up and and back. So now the second one this one the one that idea that the rotation on I'm gonna go in and change its mode. Idea would change it down to multiply. And now they zoom in real close to see that now I've got my nice that'll. Kind of via -- during their second now manipulate now what I did to get those nice little poles that you saw in the in the overall image. Is that I just displaced. Ones I had the for the final fabric I've I've merged it all into a single layer like in this case I would just in fact. I want to be able to keep all my original pieces to what I'll do that create another layer and hold down my option key alt on the PC and say. -- visible and easy that the merged them all into that one later there even the other ones in -- That way I don't have to mess -- those. And then I can go in there and take that layer and displace it to get those nice that occurs or use the -- whatever displace. There's a couple episodes where I've used a space before so you. -- that when if you don't remember those shows. Go watch them again. But -- is just a question of going into creating or -- through Ben's and such. I don't want to use it effectively fight going to weren't gonna kind of smear it and you lose all that nice texture and there. So blend or rather displace and war would be much better ways of going in and creating more than myself foale's. The same thing applies for the other texture which is fine. Kind of a limit in we've that we thought a second ago to create another file. And here I'm gonna create that the texture this one here is a pattern this is really easy. I don't here and I'm gonna create any layer and create though. Shape just like. They like that right now I'm gonna go in there and I'm gonna fill -- with a let's go with a -- light -- this like -- like that go ahead and fill that with that quick -- there -- So now I'm going to duplicate that straight across. A site that's I have to him right there like that. Now I would take that layer and duplicated and duplicate I would go in there and rotated. Just rotate it at a ninety degree angle there is my basic pattern right in there. Now going to give this a little texture and go in there and that's that's convert the background so we can really see was gonna happen now the background is now convert the black. Command -- control -- Okay and then I'm going to the top layer here I'm gonna double click on it and I'm gonna give it a little. To zip top we don't just gonna going to give a little. Inner glow little inner glow now this is right here. I want to be darker because its threads are going. It back to get darkness on the Tuesday darker grey but like -- that one right there. Which now that I'm gonna show up because it's at the screen so with said that the multiply and beautiful dark tones in there. To bring up that capacity bit so then my nice little page rate in there. Okay -- want to duplicate that pulled them out he can drag them to FX over to later one so that they both have that same kind of a texture. So now one more thing and go back to my little vertical ones my horizontal and give them a little. Penny dropped -- evolution at a one in his seat as a little drop shadow. Right on looks good. So now. I'm going to do next is I'm gonna go in there and create that illusion that these. These little strings -- cut up into woven into each other so. Let go in there and idea let's say what cut. I'm gonna return this they -- into a selection the one below. Night and that's gonna close -- was gonna happen next and and hide those marching ants so we don't see those little guys -- and round. And what I'm gonna do this topic isn't going to go in there and erase a portion of it nice you didn't dare think created a little break. In my shadows. These great Dick created this though this though shape that's not what I want to do I don't want that effect now what happened there is that. Since I cut the actual shape of these red. The latest out I was apply to it reassigned itself to go to those new edges so I don't want that. I don't want those leased out to change -- want to continue in the motion which state are so when we do that going to take. These layer styles out of that later I'd come over here to layer. Go on to layer style mistake create layers that -- going to break them up into individual layers as you can see there. -- And then when outline -- I'm gonna take this one here the same thing I'm going there and say. Layers. Layers style create layers so now. I'm gonna take that inner glow and says merge down. Into that one below. And a tape. This guy and -- it down to is that inner glow of the the horizontal ones merge down so that it's part of that. And that's sort of tobacco for a second to that drop -- is going all the way across I want that drops out to be seen only inside my vertical it's. So I'm gonna go do it I'm gonna go in here and take that Leo one copies drop shadow and clip it. Which they won so now we see it only inside the area of those vertical threats. To -- background back on. -- I sit out there is out threads and now we -- create the illusion that these guys -- into woven so I'm gonna go in there and turned the bottom -- just election. And then I am going to the top layer and I'm going to race. This one. And and erases. Right there now also in this case would be that drop shadow going to race. This one."
" And and erases. -- I've been raised these guys -- get that sense that this guy is coming over and so what I've do you really want to get tired on this thing you might want to go in there and had a couple of other little textures is depending on how closely you going to look at this fabric now in my particular case the fabric so tiny that has seen these kind of details but. Let's just say you want it creates a dual -- that you might want to take that extra step. And go in here entity. Vertical ones and maybe just -- shadow right inside here and it's does make a brush or small up and you might want to add just a little bit of at home. Right in there like that then write in here like so. And just a little extra totality just so given that sense that it's going in the same thing with the horizontal ones you might want to just -- a little -- right on the air and right on this societies are getting more of that. Senses movement in there. And I'm gonna turn on my background and I'm ready to create my my pattern. I don't know I'm gonna select. That's patting you could turn on degraded you want to get it exact. But what I'm doing here right now is I'm just about creating. A shape so that this site was decide equals the width of here now I'm eyeballing this is what I'm saying you might turn on the grid just to get it perfect. I'm just eyeballing it taping here decide post that site will give me that little space in there. And I might want you to install -- more just like that. Tonight turn on my background because in between the threads I want to be transparent. So that I have that I let go and I say define my pattern. Sign a pattern there it is so now when I pull back and that's like installed and dump it in fact it's just so take all three of these layers. And say goodbye. Nice seeing you get rid of them and -- my background writes an hour and a new layer I'm gonna go in there and go ahead and -- it. With that pattern. And -- a little pattern we just created right there click okay and there we had this nice little weave pattern going on now again. India. In the -- there what I did would this is site created large regular on geek heaven and shrink it way down to the size and I needed. And then I created a whole series of lines to create these -- displacement that made it look all nice and twisted and so on. So you get the general idea of how this works. Its discretion of going -- playing with the filters and looking at things we're gonna fabrics and see how they made Seattle's patent is a fitting in and then going in there and playing around with the tools of Photoshop. To recreate the effect. Hope to learn something from that remember it's not exactly what I did but how I did it sometimes you make a little change here and there. Instead of a up a straight line might want to make the currently lives and elves and got a -- for fabric and so one. It's a do you know what the end result for you is going to be and just means changing a couple settings here and there may be different color and so on. It did anything else.
