Home Improvement with Photoshop: Create Flooring

Getting ready to improve your home? See the results in Photoshop first. This week's episode is about DIY home improvement, specifically showing you how to create flooring.

Create hardwood flooring
Bert received a request to create Parquet floor, which is a simple, symmetrical type of pattern. Set up your workspace by turning on your canvas grid (View > Show > Grid) because we'll be working with straight, even shapes. Choose colors like the ones Bert picks for your foreground and background color. The filter Render > Fibers will create a wooden texture based on the colors you chose. Apply this filter, and your whole canvas will be filled with wood. Change your grid color in Preferences so you can see your grid on top of the pattern.

Create planks of wood
Use the grid to create uniform vertical, rectangular selections. Choose Layer > New > Layer via copy. Make two planks. Darken the midtones of the background layer using Levels. Simply pull the middle arrow to the right. Select another uniform sized plank and make a couple new layers with it. Put all the planks next to each other and you'll see that there will be differences in color - this is good. You can lighten some of the planks for more contrast.

Add nails to the wood
Get a small sized brush, turn off Shape Dynamics and turn on Smoothing in Brush Presets to manually apply nails to the wood in a new layer. At this point, turn off the background visibility and merge visible layers.

Create a pattern
Now that you have a single tile of planks, duplicate that layer and rotate 90 degrees. You may turn off the grid at this point to see the floor from a better perspective. Scale down all layers and merge the visible tile set. Create a pattern from this set (Edit > Define Pattern) and fill the canvas with the flooring pattern.

Create marble flooring
Bert uses black and green for his foreground and background colors this time. Set up the tiles ahead of time by creating a checker pattern mask.

Create the pattern by using filters
Instead of Render > Fibers, we'll choose Render > Clouds, then Render > Difference Clouds. Apply this filter several times until you see your desired marble texture. Duplicate the marbled layer into a new layer. Desaturate and rotate the top layer and create a mask. In that mask, fill with a checkered pattern to see the tiled marble floor.

Use 3D to apply perspective
To give the floor some angles, don't use distort or perspective. Instead, use Photoshop's new 3d capabilities. Choose 3D > New 3D Postcard from Layer. Now you can pull in corners of the floor while keeping the tiles in tact. Apply some spot lighting to create additional realistic depth.

But this parquet floor which means that -- little thin strips so we don't need to have all kinds of pearls and stuff want to keep it would. Fairly simple here so I might do. Increases strength a little bit bring down a variance to get different kind of text is having that's looking pretty good right there bringing down a variance. Really seem like we did really well some -- going to change the color for my grid so that I can see it on top of this thing a lot better. I did my -- grades so let's say what red is gonna look bright red is pretty visible back there. Maybe the green and we better green is really easy to see -- goes would right. So let's go with the green click okay and there we have are what so now I'm going to do it on a select from different parts. I -- blue jump from right here. I'm selecting war. Panels and format am -- gonna say give me a new layer via copy. Right now I'm gonna go over here and does select four right there go back to my background layer and say."

And I might want to go dared darken a little bit so I'm just gonna go to my levels and a dark in my mid tones a little just to get a little dark and you can see how it's darker than the original sat there. Click okay and now I'm gonna select say this piece right here. For. And say you later. The copy. And then finally just like to start one right down here it's okay in the background. You later. Via -- and I'm gonna return might cause the black market analyst did the background and just go ahead of the that was quite sad to see my four little slats there. Some and take my job or select. Moved to a I'm gonna take these guys remove them and the positions that a date line up. With the others. -- that they are right there now you visit to grange don't match so that's really good that way that I've seen a whole different kind of effect and I want to take this up. Just so that the area have a different look to them that I think this guy propping him up in here. And -- doing little up foot vertical on him -- which is going there and say. The vertical. So now we can turn off -- grid we don't need to see a grid. I'm gonna go and -- select this whole bunch all of them -- like that turn off the grid. It's 200 right there and though we might wanna shrink this down. So we're going there and shrink the whole thing down this is going to say scaled down. Hold down my shift key to constrain and make sure we got all of and select their."

" all four. Communique analysts scale them. Hold down my shift keys that they constrained. Right there like that. Make that happen. And now. I'm gonna go and I select them."

Yeah that's really good I might want to go in there and it's just like this up just a little bit those mid tones. We get some nice additional tones happening in there to -- it is my marble. Okay that looks good. So not want to duplicate that layer."

Let's do a little flip horizontal so it's very different from the one below okay. This one here I'm gonna go into hue saturation since they've -- saturation. And lighten up a little bit. This is a light colored marble so we have that marvel and a small beautiful marbles. The one on top here when I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go in there and give it a mask. There's a mask I gave it a mask so. Is that mask I'm gonna go ahead and fill. I'm gonna fill it with that pattern we created that pattern remember that pattern. Click okay and now we see that the green marble is not showing through. How little black marble bit so now we've got the marble floors that would go ahead and merged is down. So now. This is the floor I want to go and and distort this into perspective to turn it into an actual floor. The usual methods don't quite work she got these nice little squares that look pretty good. All right let's go in there and that district is there and say we do it prospective. -- perspective is going to. Do this well look at those squares. Doesn't quite look right right that'd be long rectangles this trying to distort. It's gonna say. Distort. So gonna grab this corner and drag it down we dragged his corner and drag it down. And again. This sure doesn't look like that one. These kind of square that on -- pretty square these became these long. Rectangles again neither of these really work why because. Where you're distorting pixels and it's not really a three dimensional space. And here's the key. Three dimensional space Photoshop does have 3-D. I've taken that later. And turning into a 380 postcard. New three postcard from there this would apply also that I wouldn't that to -- away at the same thing I'm gonna go and SA new -- postcard from there. And -- It is now 83 postcard now we're not seeing anything yet. But once I start to move it I'll get my little tool here and start to move this so that I move it so that it is in fact on the floor. And we could see that now this is still the square and that."

So remember it's just a question of what you -- to -- but if there's some kind of way -- like checkerboard patterns are kids grids for those kind of surreal looking scenes such. Again if you're creating a flat mental -- to back it just doesn't work. Would normal tools unless you turn into an actual 3-D object at which time when you tilt it back it will be going into the third dimension.
