Using Photoshop Layers
Monday, March 9th, 2009 running time 21:47
Save time and make modifications easy by labeling, grouping and duplicating layer groups. Bert demonstrates with multiple hotel room scenes.
Re-use layers to create different scenes and moods
Bert uses a hotel building with multiple rooms to demonstrate the effectiveness of using layers in a Photoshop file. All of the rooms derive from a single scene with individually labeled lamps, chairs, beds and more in separate layers. All the elements that belong to a room are put into a group, which can be duplicated and modified instead of being re-drawn.
Apply and change lighting
Lighting will vary from room to room, most noticeable on wall and ceiling layers. Radial gradients create lighting effects. To change the lighting in a duplicated room, simply move the gradient to the desired area of the room's ceiling and wall layers. Modifying the brightness of the lamp shade, light bulb, and light pole layers also contribute to the effect.
Changing shadow directions
Make sure to turn off "Use Global Light" to change drop shadows individually for each element. If left on, your shadows will move in all places of your Photoshop file.
Add curtains
In a new layer, create multiple shapes of curtains. Fill with white, then duplicate to make 3 separate curtain layers. Varying opacities and shades between the three layers make the curtains look realistic.
Using masks
Use layer masks for elements that will filled with different patterns, such as a bed. With a mask, the shape stays in place and patterns can be applied easily, varying from room to room.

" Go back to my idea -- you private school that to another little thing about. Times square. And the reason I wanted to facilities it is the whole concept of layers now I've talked about there isn't just about every show how important they are. What really show you about how I'm able to take layers and -- use them and reason in this case to create different scenes and by being able to put everything into a layer it makes it really easy to make the changes and change the moods. -- radio industry right now we have the current status. The job. I script saying now. Zooming right up here that is dark area here and we know it does a low rent version so it's not gonna be very clear that you see it as a moving back to -- that's the Marriott hotel. In times clip now I get rid of posted this is a little bit because see that it's. Pretty pixel it. That's not worry about that that's close that down because I happen to have. Cyrus version just that little area opened here now I'm gonna zoom in real close again so we could see these this little window. And could see the detail that's going on there it is it is quite a bit is a lamp and as a painting. -- on the -- what happens to be one of my paintings as a bed and -- care now we move growls to that there is up other rooms universalist when that window's a kind of closed. And appeared as. Wonder if somebody's watching television in fact you can receive bids at fort. And their body underneath the covers of the bad. And there's another room where the lights turned on somewhere else which is also the case way back here in this this -- The first row -- that one room and the one below it. There's a light on over there and the other side of the room and way down here -- another light gun. Elsewhere bedroom that this would bring this over -- Quebec on the thing here and we did that bottom -- have a light on -- over here in -- corner. Now the exact same elements are in each room while -- in this entire room. This opinion is the same words and these do -- here being a different line they have to other things. Of course -- all putting things in mind but they're different bands because. They have kind of the same day court in one come to you is lying there so all these room. One vote for whatever it is has same pain and this one has -- I think bedspread and so. But the thing is that all these things came from one individual room. This one room where I created the lamp. And -- it and the lamp is made up of many different there's as well. Like this field goal and it will open up our our there's our panel here and we can see all the different layers that make up. This room scene and you see that down here. There's a section right here."
" His vote inside rooms inside rooms has a whole bunch of stuff inside the inside room that's as close on this piece appears decided to building. Busy inside rooms and you -- this. All of the elements of the room than I did the other room down here dark room to darkroom movement top left and so on. And each one of these we'll have all the elements of the elements are all of their own layers like presence here's the lamp. In the lamp we have these. The whole copy which is a part of -- inside the shape is the light bulbs which right now for particular -- we've got elected hasn't out of line it is a poll this Atlanta itself and the shape. Everything is in his own individual layer his friends is the chaired the chair will have the the armrest. Stated to congress decide the legs the chair back the bottom. Having everything in its own individual layer makes it really easy then go in there and make changes what I need to. And those changes could be quite a few actresses. Are the upper rooms are you the viewers a little yeah a little different so. You see that much of the bed on -- lower floors but as you go higher the bit going to see less of the bed because the beds deeper into a room and out -- this site is a little off. So if you Maceda of that so is -- gonna take that may have been just without a little bit. This thing there with a lamp let's look at a this image right here now this is just the up derivative that -- care. -- just the main elements the chair. The bed the paternal all and the -- right now these elements are in their own layers as you can see here. Yeah in their own individual layers so there -- a group. Each room with put into a group that group contain the lamp with its current properties for that particular room the bedspread everything. All the properties -- in their own layers in their own group inside the group for the room and Antoinette Perry is gonna say. Duplicate the group that is coming up here -- got -- probably and I say duplicate the group right right there duplicate group. What happens is it gives me another group does exactly like that group with all those elements inside I didn't think that entire group as a whole move over to the next window. And then going to be into the individual objects and start shipping them around to make the --"
" For its so heated about this right now. It's just got the bed. It's got the job. The Albanian boat the lamp and so so or not it's just and -- that is so back -- create a little later with a win back here. I you put -- thing and I just to create shape just like this across. Just like that. And -- of course there's the ceiling. Right so now it's being lit by this like right here so long ago a nice. Colorful. Like -- Drawn on to the ceiling there like this nice kind of but the orange like that. And for my background color let's get a deep version of that they've this round but like that. And -- my radio gradient till I -- it set to radial gradient. -- gradient right above the ceiling up here. Like. That books and we -- this too. What mountain background. It remembers everything the last time they hear about so just do that again and there we got this nice light on the ceiling effect let's do it this way. So it's just more like there it is it's a bit right above -- the war there -- so now. Back here I went to just draw a most election. -- through here."
" And in -- layer behind this one is there right back you close on the war."
" Right there's a wall now here we're gonna draw another real raid now this is the wall that's directed behind his lamp here so it does -- this. Makes gradient right so. Right there it is steam room lit up by the -- right so there there is our room. Now our our little paying on the wall we might want to go into the pain they did give a little later style. So just click demands they will give a little up a little drop shadow. Just like that a little less this -- down this is so about the B two is just a little hint of -- drop shadow. Click okay now -- you some curtains. Out of those curtains were created such -- going to create a quick set it curtains are here and there way to the top here. I'm gonna go in here and just draw some shapes with -- My path tool that's gonna grow to a bunch of those shapes and -- like this. And I took my time when I did them and we'll make a little different. When item forty X two campaigning I took my time and made a really all kinds and I flew flows here want to kind of do it very quickly just to get the effect. And what to a couple. Groups that closes. And then it's to a couple right here. I felt. To kind of rough one more. Right there. Okay so now I'm gonna go ahead and fill those with white. So I think my got my past and I say that there I go ahead and -- those with. Like that video and they're inside because they're behind the area of the window itself and right so now. I'm gonna take those -- and -- movement. But that is that move over here they just won a moon there that this one move it right there. And it'll what was it aside here this -- just a little bit let's take this guy and duplicated with duplicate of over the here I did like that -- and in another layer. Let's create another layer on top of that and we might wanna just these little bit just to get a new ones happening though Mike Hanna was discussed over. This guy and I today they are so in another layer and go back to my path and build out along with white. -- is another one so now I'm gonna just go look this whole area back here. And shift select this area here and may third later. Right behind this one."
" I'll fill that with white."
" That's going there and fill that with. Where life an -- gonna -- both layers that and a reduced capacity for each one of those who bring that down take this one bring it down. And bring that one and bring down a bit these and I got all these little folds of the living curtains as they're falling into I've seen. And then one last curtain that will add. And we'll put it behind here is not to select -- breakthrough here. And shift. -- breakthrough here. And will fill that area with a -- great beneath the screen like this. And will go ahead and fill that with that great and that becomes a little dark area behind the curtains this kind of blocking out that part of the room. So every have a room and now what's gonna happen is I'm going to take that -- and duplicated and went over to another window so now going to change the look of this room. This particular room now with going to happen is that with a change to light the light is somewhere else in this room from a lamp that we don't quite see. So we've been using existing C sequences that we have appeared to shift them around. So. The lights going to be somewhere down here so let's pick out colors for are light source again. Pick up that bright yellow that right on for the foreground. And is dark color for the background color. And let's go to our ceiling down there. There's not stealing a lacked transparency so the lights only gonna effect exactly what I want to do and literal light source like. That there it is all war all. It's locked transparency so we don't get the color exactly where we want it and you would it was a -- over the menu gradient. And do a little something like that he all of a sudden now we get this might somewhere else now let -- still lit. This lamp should not be let someone look at my lamp here. Okay and we got the -- So I'm doing the ball I'm gonna take off their effect that don't have that out of glow anymore and I'm going to go in there and just kind of -- in the so we're gonna go in there and that's just go in there maybe. Do without. Hue saturation just going to darken it down if it -- little hint delightful there like that. Now the here's to shake which is the -- that's the one on top there now the light's coming from the other side there. So let's pick up those callers on the shape itself to pick -- that bright yellow and that darker brown -- right there and appreciate we. Make sure that the transparencies -- get migrating tool and we'll -- going this way. Even now the light's coming from somewhere -- in fact it's just vote from yes from that justice little hint to the side and if we want we could also go here and brown decides that it's a little darker than it out of stuff inside an actual example that's cool so at this or select -- and click on that. There is so lamp. Of Obama control button there that tells me exactly what I'm looking at so. Here's the lamp it is a lamp that's that part in there okay which is holding the poll there's a poll inside that I think his lamp. And I'm gonna go in there and take away its effect which is just a stroke listening to stroke in there. That's good but what I'm gonna do it and a lot transparency and gonna make that very dark. So I'm gonna go in there and create a gradient. Just like this -- has a light coming from that side. Who took -- gradient in there like that and we'll also go in there and then make it darker blue near and darken that. This and now we've got this like coming from the other side and uphold. Has is nice effect now that Poland the evidence that poll we might wanna change Apple's unlock the transparency in a -- pick up the brown from. Down here and go ahead and build that into the -- to depose completely dark tonight is -- we've totally changed the look of that room. Now if we take a look at -- for a second. That's exactly curtains are painting on the -- coming from over here now so wouldn't go to that paying on the war. And it is to the layers are both those letters style recorded a drop shadow and this kind of it's combat that someone going there and let's keep in mind that we have a lot of players have a lot of rooms. Some going to be changing all these different light sources so it's very important that global like today globalized and I turned it off why. Because if I change a light source here. The room next door it's lights -- change -- we don't want that we've settled these things are specific to light of that room for eternal global like taken effect each. Object individually. Independently of all the others. And I've got that set I cannot say what the light coming from this side. Right about here is that what distance and -- would have to think long shadow on the side there from this light source the world we here. Click okay and now we come over to turn on curtains again and everything that we have a totally different room. Different lighting same elements. And what if we're just a little lower down we forgot something -- thing we forgot them the the bed. The dead salute to light that we got to go in there and that's darken that this is going there and -- because of the light coming from somewhere else click okay you know what. That's to a little dodging right in this area with a much smaller brush. I was going there and get a much smaller but I'm just gonna lighten this side of it right through there. Because it's picking up the light from that corner of the room like this they did that little light from that corner and -- this -- to save a little higher up. Then what's gonna happen is that the bed and Leo's spread -- removed them down just a little bit and not the lamp because once the dead. Dead and there goes both it and move goes down and I keep getting attached to land all in the life book -- forgot to turn that off. The or Mac he's gonna select. All the pieces I've got going there. And bring that down for an out of bed in who by itself few days ago and the low chair we're gonna kind of move that a little bit too because it shares a little. And it moves over to state the all the elements of the chair. And it has moved goes down that this is a little less visible and so on and now we see and the pain of course should be further down to look. If -- containing a move it down. Like that so now we're looking at a higher floor."
" So -- that they did this in less of the bed because this deeper into the room to paying the little. More visible because it's it's again it's for the back but we're looking at from -- different -- so long as it's questions studying how things look. Office buildings a good way because. Again to cycle tells a lot of whom will look the same the same kind of cubicles and so he could -- if you're on the floor looking in America -- Your regular view. Whereas the floors above that of the IOC to see more the ceiling. That's of the floor -- of the the actual furniture because it's out of your your line of sight so. Shifting everything in layers keeping every element that layer allows you to go in there and make these solutions. So you have an entire building -- many things going on in -- in -- Wendell kind of like I do. And make the necessary changes to each and every one of them. Without having to redraw every one of if you want me go change I change the bedspread was just question taking a pattern. Not having to redraw the whole thing to stream pattern towed into the -- if you look at the bet that's an of the pattern this is the black bloc. Are there and -- masking the pattern of the bet. With you look turn out that the math you see that the -- is just as they. Block turning back on the -- map -- bad that the bingo you've that it gets the by the of the black blob so it's just the pattern that can easily change and therefore I got the same bed. From bedspread. So it makes it really easy to make changes without having to -- to everything. That's the beauty of -- is they allow you to re purpose things. So that you just -- it's over and over again and if you need to change something or -- need to do is devoted specifically that has the element that you need to change and then you make the change. So this. It's just question billionaire plan with the stuff. And there's a great place to place. Does this so for giving you can just move things around their own way. Change the color whatever it is anything you can imagine you've created here. And if anything you'd like to see and feel of something you've been struggling with and you can't figure out at work -- During your play. Send me an email sent to start at Revision 3 com coming would you like to see or you can check out the forums at revision3.com. Forward slash forums. And I mean the entire world I get email from people in Africa watch the show -- can be seen all over the world. Just send your art your designs to me at -- at revision3.com. And you're back on should be. 1280. Pixels by 73280. By seven point pixels and a JPEG file size is crucial. As the typical thing like that up on Spain and if it's too vague and doesn't follow both particular dimensions. Going to have to crop part of it and I don't know about you I don't like my stuff crop I create something it means everything has to be seen. Like things crop. So that's what you gotta do and that we goofy artwork of there I -- you learn something from this. Number plates that's -- sit there and play.
As the typical thing like that up on Spain and if it's too vague and doesn't follow both particular dimensions. Going to have to crop part of it and I don't know about you I don't like my stuff crop I create something it means everything has to be seen. Like things crop.
