Change the focal plane of images from images shot on a DSLR. Learn the tips and tricks to apply filters to Smart Objects, such as specific in-camera blurs using filter masks.

And I've gotten really interested in and change in the and -- at the not the dynamic range of the app focal plane of images so I I have never I mean -- some -- the format -- a few times but. But nothing since I went to digital off alarms though in any contains. What's in focus front to back that it's always parallel to the little lens plane are the film plane. And I want to shift that so balancing how to do that inside of Photoshop after the fact. Cool that's correct yeah okay so. I typically when they do make composites so I'm using smart objects. And there is a problem with the lens blur filter and that you can run it on a smart objects so. I was thinking about this and thought well when I just -- the -- a different filter because the lens blur filters actually a little bit complicated and that. It could it is creating a blur that looks like an in camera blur but it does that based on -- So it's kind of hard for a lot of folks myself included or maybe it's easy for everyone else is hard for me to pre visualize the mask can draw Automask. So when I decided since I figured out that. You couldn't do this on a smart object I think -- trick and make us workarounds so what I do is I turn my background into a smart object. And the reason I do this in the beginning is so that I can actually had a different filter to just kind of mimic what the lens blur filter would do. He's you can see it's great out here can apply -- to smart object. So I apply icons in blur filter. And without allows me to do is blur my image. RA and then when I click okay because that's the smart object. I actually get announce right here. So I can use this math to kind of approximate what and again with Landler. You get it McCain yeah that's my life my whole life as a worker yeah. Yeah okay so I just tap the B key to get my came breast and the -- to make sure that campaign team with a black. Now it tells it -- campaign that's because I'm on my layer I actually need to be on the mask here. And I can either use. I can use a brush. Lori you know what else might even be quicker is if I use the gradient instead and in fact if I use this -- Reflect reflected great thank you don't kick he had to spelling hard words that an excellent anything when entries will also be great. -- right so I -- drag from the little A in the middle out towards the edge of the nest. And what that we'll do is. Absolutely yeah we have a little screen dry issue of -- me issue there Leo okay there we go is just build it. Are solely about zoomed in a little bit but I think you can see what's happening here is basically. Where the -- is black it's hiding in the blur and of the goes out to the edges in -- seen the Blair. But it's kind of a weird color but that's not what you are getting cameras this is very much like kind of this hazy Goldstein blur. But it what it does is it the least little lamb -- to. -- do about this. Big they're very good of visualizing my goodness it's really good to visualize okay we'll just pretend it yeah and they've been okay that bridge to just. You think you just focus on us as we're chatting on on the same -- are -- So I will zoom out again and has what I wanna do is I don't want this whole area to be in focus because that's just distracting I just want the eggs the the nest in the -- there. So I'll grab my my paintbrush and get a really big brash. And making sure I'm still -- black don't know sorry I need to switch that to white so will tap the X key. And then I can just make sure that this is not gonna be in focus. Right there. And then -- zoom back concedes he would've done so basically I've painted out. Right here's another sense because okay so the thing is the problem is is that. I don't like -- I want the lens -- so it'll do it'll just duplicate the slayer really quickly I just option dragging up. And there isn't I use option ganging up as opposed to control today is because -- multiple layer selected control. The aggregate multiple layers written so okay so this layer though let's take off the smart filter. Let's just -- they'll throw the trash and then we'll convert visceral -- drives this in the just a regular layer just to us. -- So what that'll do is it'll allow me to apply lens -- but they need to somehow get. This mask into announced channel so we can use -- hair -- we -- Can down here to channels I'm sure you know all about this and who do this. Being that you -- the author of channel chops. Cola co -- to it yet okay so. You'll notice that when I'm on this player though of course I can't access the mask -- as soon as I click on -- zero now I've got my filter mask so I drag that to the new channel icon. And now I actually have a game mask though and it's like I could improve that and it's doesn't it. It's gonna be out out of it maybe it'll get rid of that we don't want any hard edges it's always nice to -- looking -- mass can make sure that they're earning straight lines and there. Okay so now I have this wouldn't go back to human original lawyer I've got my alpha channel this is on blurred and then I cannot -- and just go to filter. Learn now because it's not a smart object we gonna Landler. Brings up the lens -- dialogue box. For my source here for depth now they need to change this to that alpha channel which I should probably renamed something that's better than what it is but. We can see now I find move up my radius because this is my iris controls here so I can change for example the shape to a pentagon. I can move up the radius and you can see that now this is actually blurring it Nat clicking get a much nicer -- we had before it and a spending maybe forty might be enough. -- I think that's gonna we'll go ahead and click okay. Now this does take a little while. So this is gonna the benefit of making the the mask is in the Gaza and -- people like I you know it may not understand why the bank is applying this filter takes a long time. So I know that I've got the mouth right in theory I only have to apply the filter this one time I would not to apply it then."

And you can just grab any of these edges. And that will now become the edge that I can use and I did I can do more than one like take a grab for different areas that a Cisco -- one to keep it simple here. And then. We can copy this I think that's probably the easiest and then we'll just go ahead and move to this image at the nest and pasted then. He's limit Chile Canada and skated over it's obviously not quite large enough so I think they can just go ahead for the -- this demo we'll just make it a little bit bigger. And hit return her enter now depend on if you want a black edge or right edge we can do either one of anything. And -- white -- the black can't the black edges look at its you know the black background and you gotta point. Aren't fun so let's do that we will will make a duplicate of us.
