What's New in CS4 - Part 2 of 3

Monday, January 5th, 2009 – running time 24:06
Adobe Photoshop's Principal Product Manager joins Bert again to continue explaining lots of the new features in CS4 (Creative Suite 4).

Included is discussion about:

  • Camera Raw (over 200 formats natively supported inside of Photoshop)
  • Simple painting and graduated filer/gradient tools inside the RAW environment (the cool thing about doing it in RAW is that all the settings are non-destrictive - same as some of the features in Adobe Lightroom)
  • Dial in adjustments using brushing tools in camera RAW
  • A plugin called pixel bender that harnesses the power of the GPU to let you do a ton of things on the fly (look for the pixel bender at labs.adobe.com)
  • Applying photos as a texture onto a 3D surface
  • 3D navigator tool for rotating on multiple axes
  • Controlling lights and sources of light in 3D images
  • Painting Directly on 3D surfaces
  • Mixing 2D and 3D together - applying 2D imagery to a 3D environment

Bert's latest book: Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy: Digital Painting (Voices That Matter)

Feel free to email Bert: bert@revision3.com. You can also submit your artwork for the show background as a 1280x720 JPEG.

Now Adobe CS four is now Nvidia GP UG PU accelerated. From rich images and print video and film to dynamic digital content for a variety of media and video GPU accelerated. Adobe solutions can be enjoyed by anyone who creates -- interacts with the visual information. And it's pretty much everybody who's watching this show right now. And of course GoDaddy got Cobb if you want to make an impact on line go to bed dot com has what you need. Dot com mains for as low as a dollar -- 99. Entered a -- pixel one that you see right -- screen. And when you check out you'll save an additional 10% off here in higher order. Oh right so as he's need to say it wasn't it. Here we are on another show pixel per fluid dual kinds of cool stuff and one applicable we left off last week. John here again and eventually more stuff of Photoshop."

" John Edward Kennedy Harry thanks for him on -- I had out -- we're going to. IPhone. Things are talking about that the minute phase and you features of the bridge and so long. And I kind of gave little hint about the new 3-D thing going on there so. The -- and stuff it's so much is it all right now just to BAT's though I'll get you there justice and but but let me -- the -- slightly round about way and and will will make a way of computing to treaty in function sounds like a good all right kids."

" I'm actually one of that the reasons we need Photoshop extended what we did this is really about. Not trying to make Photoshop in in my -- or 3-D S max or anything like that it's really just about extending the skills you've got. From from you know maybe come from traditional print going to the web may be here to dealing with 3-D that's what it's about so. We'll take you there but as they say just just to build suspense. Let me let me take you through some of -- they didn't get to show earlier for example camera -- So you know one of that things as I say you know for source media. Easiest thing you can do is start taking pictures and of course a lot of folks are now capturing images in raw formats. So now support somewhere well over 200. Formats natively inside a Photoshop. Can rot is foreign way. Together with flight him the most popular. Raw converter there. And we really and it's nice core enhancements and OC has for so what the interface is gonna look the same. -- and that kind of the line is the fact that there's some pretty radical transformation. And then as we've gone from letting you just adjust the entire image it wants so you don't keeps you -- to slide up -- exposure affects all the pixels. -- I can do selectively who can actually have. Some simple painting and filter tools for excuse me am. Graduated filter creative tools inside of the rural environment. So -- it's not my car when I was asked so no. It's my god that's first -- You can shock we want to have a little -- some visual drama to it. That's what it's gonna select the new gradient tool graduated filter in not camera. And now I can set up whatever premise -- one and I can set -- more than one just -- like to -- I just gonna want to bring down the sky. I'll make it look that much more exciting and I'm simply a dialing in the adjustment and then. Clicking and dragging and we can see is I've got a a two point creative. About a green point where it starts at got a -- point where it stops and I can move that around I can also. Change the angle. And so is very very easy now to apply adjustments camera just on the selected part of the image. Similar -- really want to open up."

" Foreground. I could -- making -- gradient. Instead of darkening I want to changed bring up the exposure if you want to to bump up the country master of the saturation. And again I can just click and drag. And the fact just -- selected part of the image. And I might say what it is great but I can do this in Photoshop. Ages ago -- certainly true you certainly can't do in Photoshop. The cool thing about to in the wrong. Is all the settings are non destructive so the world just basically instructions applied to your file he can always get rid of them later you can apply them from one image to multiple images. And now with one of the latest updates in -- camera raw. You can actually apply are snapshots so over here on the right. I haven't updated this this copy of camera but you can in fact I don't see it multiple settings -- file. So those are just some of the core enhancements. People like that things that we introduced in light room that other camera -- And before -- leave hearing in tickets to Photoshop I want to point out senility is me and when it comes to brushing. You can now dialing adjustments using brushing tools in -- camera and so you can for example if you wanted to use sort of dodge and burn want to. Dodge this quadrant of the car I clicked a pain and and he can see now when enough so that this sort of -- Google maps pin. That region is being affected by that -- So I can change my mind later say actually wanted to burn it obviously not the best looking I change but. All that stuff remains fully flexible so it's sort of almost like a vector based way to paint. On your way into Photoshop. So lots going on camera I don't wanna. Burn my whole time on that. But I think it was nice way to get again started. I also want to hit on another kind of sleeper feature -- it's not in the box for Photoshop is something you can download. You were just talking about graphics cards GPU's -- and we showed. In in in my last -- some of the power those. Well there's another way to take advantage of them in -- CS -- but -- say it's not in the box on this actually keep plugging you can download from Adobe labs. And it runs a thing called pixel Bender. And so now you're graphics card has sort of quietly gotten so powerful."

" They can do a ton of stuff on the fly and so under the filter menu once had it's just labs dot Adobe dot com and look for pixel Bender. Once you've gone there double click you can do is download this file and installs itself and go under the pixel Bender. Menu under filters. Had been -- to this environment where can run. Whole new class of filters super fast. So I've got this circle splashes and move it around."

" You can see even though. You know we're running this on a laptop at thirty to -- some its resources to recording the show. I'm getting is extremely fast. Fluid performance and this is all enabled by tapping right into your graphics card. Defect to stick if you don't believe me let me turn off the GP processing for us. And try to drag it around. And yeah it'll update. But this is more like what you've got done correctly figure exactly exactly so. It really showcases just how much. Slicker we can make things with the graphics card the cool thing here is everybody who writes -- filter for the new flash player. Is automatically writing one for Photoshop and four after effects some really cool thing is you can go open -- exchange you can find all of these different. Filters they're really just one -- two kilo bytes of peace text files you download them. And now you've got -- filters for Photoshop so if you want to apply sort of I chuck close the fact. -- goodness we -- flashing and not quite sure what's going on there. But you can do some really. He really neat things just with the filters in the books so again it's -- thing but I wanted to mention because you -- can see that most efficient and so it. Okay so you talked about 3-D. And let's -- Let's let's get in there it's really kind of a whole radical. I think is this like boy. There's so much power. And we've really tried to simplify it where we can. But. I with a lot of power comes great responsibility. So let me just start with the -- did to me the most simple but. In many cases highly useful thing you can do with treaty and by always there are features that are -- to Photoshop extended. So I can choose new treaty postcard from layer and so just got a normal JPEG that they opened up and use that command. And given few seconds to process. And what you'll see is. Bachus right nothing well the subtle thing is that actually down here on the layers panel this layer has been now turned into a postcard. And what this means you can go over grabbing 3-D tools and I can just now go and got swing that outpost turnaround. And so I'm applying it. The photo as a texture onto this three dimensional surface. So really just for you know most rudimentary stuff if what you want to do is maybe just -- a -- perspective transforming wanted to be sort of you know Star Wars text -- fact crawl. Is very easy now just to apply. Can turn -- to postcard and then apply BM the 3-D tools. I should also eventually have a little three navigator that's available now and so. You can now the scale rotate. And translate your image along any one axis at a time or even multiple taxis so. If you're new to navigating in 3-D space. This can be very. I'm very handy thing. The other thing to bring up is. We have a couple missing parts of -- three story in Photoshop CS three was our first go -- you didn't have the ability to edit lights. And you didn't have really high quality render. So to get a photo realistic results something you might want to stick in when he paintings. You're gonna need those things gonna mash the scene. So under the window menu. I can grab the three panel. And that's gonna pop out. And I don't don't I have to myself don't freak. Because I want to get into. The 3-D model there is there is a lot of information in hand. But once you understand how it's presented it makes some sense. I started with this deliberately you know as simple as you can get. Case just to show okay we've got a scene where she's got one. Filed on on this where you can change things like you rendering options. But as I mention you can now control lights so I can go in and I'm gonna choose to Russia lights. And I can go in and add a new. Let's say any spotlight. And I should tell you just just full disclosure I don't consider myself -- expert by any stretch so if you are don't don't judge me too harshly. -- what I want to show is that. Hopefully can see this and actually moving a wire frame indicating this light around in space and then I can move mind model which in this case is just the simple. Texture. Relative to that. So I can go in and with these are controls on the 3-D panel itself I can do things like rotate that way around. And you can see that home is now falling on part of the image. If I want again I can take the image itself and I can. Change it you can see -- has the angle changes relative to the white. That has an effect. I can also go into the white itself and yeah I do things like change the colors of I want that to be. Well -- you won't show up. Terribly wealth which is different color. But can I can going into modify and so. What I think what you're gonna see frankly is a lot of people say well. -- maybe it may be treaty isn't just for three maybe there's some some simple easy things I can do you start using infertility stuff. And that's I think can be reached -- to talk about it when future shows. Having settle -- let's let's get to you. An actual 3-D models that we've brought him and so Photoshop itself is not a model or we don't create any thing decides it's really simple. Shapes. Com but you can bring in pretty complex models that's one of the big improvements in CS forces Korea. The complex."

" what we can handle and I imagine that for a second that. You might they already get these miles IE when I was doing me who preliminary tests on this program. I went online and I just putting. -- 3-D models and I came up -- That was my site it was basically IKEA. And had the lamps and couches and -- book cases and most of these things are free you can download three models. That give them. And right into like he's about to do -- that's right yeah Google warehouse that's a great. Agreed example where they critical to called sketch up. And they got with at this huge database we can just take screen how easy hours everything everything around hey here's six they -- oh yeah now on that."

" Okay cool. So both Clinton and grab this guy. And start interacting and down. Again this is something where we take really nice advantage of the graphics processor. So one of the subtle things he might be seeing here is the exactly right. So. We have a panorama which if it's time for -- how networks to. Stitched together in Photoshop. Shot at Adobe not -- applied to that car has a skin real time. Does he can go hands. You know see that -- as a a lot of realism to the model and this is by no means the final quality renders either. The big. Giant step forward we thought we can take is actually letting you. Paint directly on -- surfaces so if you saw a demo Photoshop CS 31 of things -- do -- take some political camp. You could pop the label on off just by double clicking the appropriate. -- down here. You can then painted and it's -- form and then stick it back on the model. And you can still be that and then this many tens of very useful thing to do you that a lot of times you just want to paint directly onto the surface and so I can just take any brush tool. And I. The irony is not lost on me gonna paint something completely. Like kid style next to very -- Africa but for the sake of it -- are you did get and then you can imagine what somebody. -- would -- But what's not real interesting here is I can just click and drag along the surface of this model. And I am applying paint stroke two that's skin. Now if I take actually the letter K I get my three rotate tool again. You can see that. Gorgeous pink blob has been applied right to the surface that car. And so that's now in. In the bit -- image that's being applied to U. To the car. So I'm gonna go -- actually get rid of that so you know again in the Spirit of extending your skills -- can X you know literally as dodge burn clone. You know any -- sexual healing brush right on 3-D surface. One of the other neat things you can do is mix two 3-D the other. And so in this case we've got this could DKL. It's still vector logo pasted -- from illustrator. It's just normal you know. Two dimensional Photoshop player. What I can do is actually choose merge down command is gonna do -- community just like -- any two. And you select both whoops excuse me. Select both my players. And hit command -- Sorry. I get rid of this guy. Transform our time. Go ahead and there we -- hit command. You can Europe better pick of the lighting exactly it's it's now part of a car yet it's even got the reflection now being applied -- that love them so. Yet again you. Could peel off the scanned and do this but to really. To get it right took a lot of finesse and so. Now we have this complementary approach you can -- it right to be projected view that you're looking it. -- began as it was showing can now start going in changing the lights. You know you can go -- and start changing idea to render options. In fact. It's maybe a slightly weird thing to do I happen to be partial to the sort of wire frame sort of almost like a retro -- kinda look. And in the render settings. You can go in and them. Actually change -- that can give it. Sort of you know a broad reach her excuse me out. When I look forward Mario wire frame lucky guy and so."

" So yeah I mean okay -- courtesy is maybe not for every client but I hope it is it is actually hit pretty cool and in fact some of the models that I found. Even if there they're not very well constructed. I found it useful just is -- almost like. Almost clip art that I can apply these various rendering effects to. Just. Do Julia child thing very quickly. -- assure you a couple of examples. Actually rendered out of Photoshop so now we were really high quality ray -- built in. SEC this is a really beautiful rendering with a full reflections and everything of exactly that harmonic lobster season. And I can step through these guys and down. You know there we apply the spotlight this is all 100% just on Photoshop. Rendered it again you can see their reflection of the building. And so so yeah you can. You can really do quite a lot now just -- since --"

" It's -- ground beautiful yet soon and have to -- Martin's stuff I'm sure you're teaching these people that we want to see more but. This show is come to a close to this week. But there's always next week right and and you're the master so I'm out of and pass the time you want to crew both. You doing pretty good that little smudge on top car. Affected you got rid of it and effective was Aaron it was that it just opens -- I think well. I embedded and guys that are that are doing these beautiful around you have waited to see go with the hot rods with the flames on the -- good stuff and I said this."

" You know you don't want to model stuff is so as we'll see about modeling and a while but. There are a lot of models have already available out there. There's hundreds of thousands of them that I have found everything from plants that of jars and everything. And they have most of them are free and it was -- just how well they really intricate and maybe you need to present professional -- just playing around. Lot of free stuff out there speed through the Internet. Freedom freedom from paying him for you know from just being able to see everything. Hope you learned something from all this stuff and hope that inspired you to go out there and upgrade and start playing with this stuff. If there's anything you'd like to see on the show email me -- and revision3.com. Or -- of the forums at revision3.com. Forward slash forums where you can join discussions about the show. And maybe even in the influence of future show. And my book. The to seasonal -- you plug it okay in my book is available magazine picture of it that you have been got a it has all kinds of techniques in there. And by the it is video retrospective coming up. In January. There's going to run for four months that the Chris gallery at Saint Mary's College that's 25 your perspective. Showing my work from the early days of Mac paint all the way to. The beauty of CS for."

" So once -- I want to thank. -- For that incredible image back here -- fairy. Planet drag him into an all kinds of stuff and -- not you can have your images back there. I'd love to see what they're doing and put it back there SEB demoralized. I'm not into -- television the members semi designs and super envisions via com. And your background should -- measure. 1280. Pixels across by 720. Pixels down. 1287. Play and it should be JPEG file. Hopefully learn something from there remember play best way to learn sit there and play is -- work does is plant -- that I -- with a -- Putting graffiti on it anything that up real fast. Hope to see you next week."

" War."

Just finished this episode up. I love how they have set a few episodes aside for demonstrating the new features on CS4. I learn more about photoshop or designing in general more from these podcast than my own college courses
