Outer Glow

Thursday, September 6th, 2007 – running time 12:33
Outer glow? It's all about manipulating Photoshop layers independently from the layer they are attached to. Bert revisits the creation of "Lunch in Tiburon" and shows you how to use an often ignored feature in layer styles.

Did you know you could manipulate Photoshop layers independently of the layer they are attached to?

Bert Monroy re-visits the creation of Lunch in Tiburon to help explain a nifty feature in layer styles many Photoshop users don't know about.

To learn more about the creation of Lunch in Tiburon check out the creation of Lunch in Tiburon Part 1, laying the foundation and Lunch In Tiburon Part 2, making pepper.

Don't miss this one as Bert shows how to make your own "outer glow".

" As an endless moments make this. -- hundred points. That's better and you got a spot it right. -- There's a where are. In a background of want to go in and throw a nice little. Gradient back. So back here in black to white -- gradient tool of Belgrade and others are gonna start. A little beyond the area I don't want pure black packets and start out here and quality and that they get this nice kind of -- and this. There ago. So now the word horror. I double click on it. And I'm gonna give it a drop show that there isn't it isn't an option. And maybe you'll. And a -- a little bit. There's -- dropped out maybe give a little more distance. That is good this it would doing this reclined. And client says well let's kinda nice but maybe I'd like a different kind of effects of with a little more drama. They think well okay here I -- an -- player out of different concepts. I'm doing here and I wanted to keep this one let's keep this so lot of those Nevada. Duplicate that there. I have to turn -- the want to back. And this one that I just duplicated I'm going to separate. Layer stuff from. Create later. Now."

" Some aspects of the effects cannot be reproduced with -- now what happens when that comes up. That's just a little disclaimer just in case some things don't work which does happen sometimes you gonna say for instance you gonna. Merge two layers at -- layer styles of the wrong he did accomplish -- handles two letters. The result might be that one cancels out the other or you just it is weird mishmash. So that little disclaimer comes out that it immediately called Adobe say hey this thing network. So that's there. But I suggest you do have you got a situation where it is one particular there has a lot of layers thousand gonna merge into another they have a lot of things about create a layer. A brand new layer that's blank. And merged the layer with all the list out into that later they -- ever. -- you -- news. Merge goes to that -- when that becomes one later. Well in the -- become embedded in that there had been no conflict when you've been merged that into another layer as players --"

" But is it okay and then it happens now we see that we have the horror copies drop shadow. Second and they've got shadows is is now a totally separate layer back there that's grab that and -- move over a little bit byte behind the that is moving up like that. And meg going there and take might transform and let's say we use distort. And a poll that out like that. And pull this out like this. And this. Something really bizarre. Like that click okay it's moving into position so is right behind the word. Just like that. And now we got this. Much more dramatic looking shadow back there now one thing to keep in mind that as shadow is moving away and I that it should get a little lighter as it gets further back. So I'm gonna do one more thing that particularly since we created this weird effect here. And we have two different ones -- have. This one. Which has its regular drop shadow. And then put a client state we have this is our one. So to take that drop shadow layer that is created and given a layer mask. And layer mask I'm gonna throw in the totality. Is at this. There gradient in there so it's gonna get softer as it gets further away it's a little lighter code there. In the ocean but now it's getting a little later as tickets -- through if you want to make it softer. As is getting sort of further away which would also happen is the case right after creating alpha channel. So I don't know how to create an alpha channel. I didn't see everything. And in my alpha channel we know that black is going to expose. And we call it -- is -- going to expose them back is gonna hide when going to air and create a gradient in here. And exposed to -- that I want right to me like that created this little expense right through there -- making stronger like days ago. And I can turn that off go back to -- load that alpha channel. And and that mayor and it has my little mask I can now apply. A gauzy blur filter. It's gonna soften up that area back there based on what. Percentage that and click okay and -- we see that now we have this. Wholly different kind of a shadow and we can even lighten it upload it in and the capacities is not so strong and now we have."

" Different feel it all started from the original layer style which it separated from the layer second manipulate that. There's stuff that affect totally independent of the mayor from where it came. Although there's thousands do that satin. Inner glow -- boss you could separate those anyway you want and become individual layers that you can then go in there and modify. Differently from the original stuff. Hope there's something from that remember is that the end result is techniques they've got to that end result.
