Thursday, April 19th, 2007 – running time 12:04
The universal solvent is back yet again. One of its great properties is its reflection of light. In this week's episode, Bert reflects on how to make photo-realistic water reflections whether it be up close or from a distance. Not only does he reflect, he demonstrates ... watch and see.

I wanna handle a subject you a lot of people requested that is water reflections I got. Request from a mark or embed Matt huge and when went there Gregory Warner dead -- And even know Greg map Purdue won it reflections and so -- They're gonna handle what are reflections -- handle three different times. One when you're really close we further away and when you really far away because in each case the infections and what it. He handled differently going to be created differently and it looked differently. So let's start with the really close by. A star over the -- blank campus and on the blank camera it's about throwing a nice little tone of agree here my foreground from -- back. A darker great. And I would migrate into and its gonna throw in a gradient to think that right now. Little dividers on the sidewalk so my lined tool here to get my line tool and does that too. Create pixels that little line goes across like that. Have another one goes across like that. Am I want a couple of little cracks in sidewalks a little tiny -- Bonior to a little crack going right through there make them thinner brush and -- going down maybe one breakthrough here. Just little cracks in the sidewalk. Now Matalin wants to install given little field. I don't want to just create a concrete sidewalk -- give it sandstone in text rights but. It's gonna be covered with water the water reflections -- its own little noise add noise and just a little bit as. That's enough about like that in fact it's going -- through fifteen it should be enough. Can echo effect stone but it's that randomization that's going on that great right now with -- all of little black and gray marks in it. That's gonna give me the effect that I need in my next filter which is gonna create committees of water over the side. And that felt that I'm gonna use is we got here and artistic we have an open -- plastic wrap. Now by the name it kind of -- it was going to happen. -- rapping with plastic which is gonna create shines and upload and so on but because all that noise have a probably effect. Onto the dialogue box there it is I can make -- highlight a little stronger and so on maybe they couldn't smoother. And I gotta do we wanna click okay and now I get this nice the effect going on here now into this notice. This is a perfect seen as a reflection we're looking down the sidewalks of -- things reflected this is perfect as looking up. As is really looking into the pool which is down to go all reflections will be looking up some of the drag this guy right into the scene and I like that. -- and I'm gonna do a little off flipped it vertical on this. More rotate 1821. There it is that's throw away now we don't need it and I'll give this a filter. And that's what -- the typical water filters designed distort I haven't been called ripple. And -- I'm gonna kind of pump it up quite a bit there in the -- click okay now go to the local report. Happening and I'm gonna change -- to something like hard light. That's gonna interact with the background have been many passes and I got this -- section in the war wrecked and on top of this and a little drop. And drop and create little circle right about here. And I got that black for my idea for a color it's the stick when he's the grave -- As it does deeply right here after a couple of told the -- inside the select the circle. There's not much going on not much -- and I'm gonna use to work with so now I'm gonna get a nice large brush. That's good sides. And that he would just broke up a little those jokes threaded this area here that's marriage is down. Down I can't with a little. Dark tone effect with big darker code here. It won't be active and throw dark tone and there -- little dark there have been more right and in theory here and -- and -- cause and -- this -- right now. -- The you do it this sandwiches toned blue who blew the blew into that area now of that next filter. Which is under distort we have zigzag which has a feature call pond ripples they. I mean he's Humana ripples and the amount of bridges and click okay I have this nice little drop of water that forms from someplace that -- Okay now step away of them. We got this scene here -- to the head at this scene -- and how are still a little further away lot of doin' in a new layer right here I'm gonna create. Long kind of way of rectangle right here. Long rectangle just like that and with my elliptical selection tool and it and my shift key -- little circle to pop. Kind of a curvature to it. That that. -- it and and layers so let's pick some colors for this new effective with -- a nice light gray. And the dark green like before -- found going to take a gradient tool with a reflective created its own little gradient and the it's like that. It sell these select America break up the bottom there with a little tiny -- I'd rather little racer which is gonna break up the bottom down here so it looks like his being. Ripple in the -- there just down below there like that a -- want to duplicate that there. And duplicate. I'm gonna do a little rotate. 18. And bring it down. All we got here and actually the 180 didn't work in this case -- because it put the -- I'm wrong size and it's just -- that pars on the line that. Now they line up that works better now going to give this guy that same. Felt that I gave it a second ago wouldn't go in there and say distort. Ripple. -- we have this effect it's that even bigger and click okay now we got these little ripples going on there have been many passes a little bit. Now one more thing have to happen first of like putting him back to the polls so we don't get this stuff showing up in them on the bottom there and leave the -- to show through. Beneath -- these little ripples here that it facing us rather than the -- the -- technical merit and it's -- so once you're gonna see reflection the other side you won't. Someone going to these layer styles for that there. And I'm here in the blending modes for the underline it. To supplement need for the sake don't hide these particular dark -- and -- you're gonna start to come through here they come right through here. Right they like that fanatic about hard -- hold down my option key. And split the slider. But decided second get these nice little softer edges happening. And there we go like that. Click okay and now we have a reflection in the -- that looks realistic. Right so that's looking good now. Far away how -- really pulling back and we -- feature nighttime. That's under the terrorism anyway daytime nighttime this effect is gonna be the same. That's going here and you see have a little -- already set up war the water there if -- edited selection and an inverse. So that might buildings selected and I think that to a new layer via -- Now in this case I'm going to take that you later and do a flip vertical. And drag it down. So did the right below the original buildings like that. Now would bring down capacity for that they're being bound -- Now here we have a whole different situation. What did these kind of protections -- When you get that far away you back on the -- ripple yeah it's a little break -- are gonna see things being ripple I can't use a rip -- of the tidal wave going on there. There's a case where when you -- away like that things -- street the history so perfect filter for this is my motion blur filter. The motion blur filter in a totally vertical position. That's that that the -- and the ending like this is quite a bit. Click okay now Wi -- that we have to our reflections but we do need those that ripples which don't exist here. Do them over to channel for the water and loaded on itself. And fill that with a nice 50% gray. Give us some noise and noise give it a lot of noise lot of noise like that. Now we have this my eyes I'm going to get emotion because what is. That -- reported Portugal's agonize and I just have a lot of noise -- most ambler. Most -- again it's at this time on the go perfectly horizontal. And a little distance of about maybe 505. Click okay. Now going to go to my levels. And levels. I'm gonna kind of lessen the amount of that noisy so I'm just going in their movies these guys around I got a nice little. Effect like this going right to me like that click okay. These select go back to my RGB and load that. Command click on it and everything that it's tied to the marching ants -- animation. Vista's -- marching ants and in a layer on top of this I'm gonna fill it with black. If on the right through that area and I can also go in there and take a paintbrush. And -- the of this green from here and larger brush and not just throwing a couple of greens along with the short run through here. And here we have some means and it's pick up this orange and with a little bit of the orange in there and through here. And there and and here at the of the green again. Through reader and running here. And then you see it and now we have three different water reflections Leo close using the -- filter. Further away using a combination of filters and layers styles and then from far away a totally different set both as I have nothing to do the war. But they give you the effective Iowa I've mentioned many times is not what. Something has called that's what it does in this case thing motion Burton to the finances is and neither time -- I actually uses the motion. He's the first to create the streaks they gave me their great reflection and then. The horizontal streaks they gave me a little ripples in the war. Remember to play the best way to turn this is the place. Think of it as work as well I hope you learned something today. Hope to see in the next show."
