Smart Objects are Pretty Smart

Learn how to use Smart Objects in Photoshop and how they protect your pixels when scaling images.
Segments
Deke McClellan is back once again to guest host with Bert Monroy on the topic of Smart Obects. We will work with RAW dng images and some type in a branding project.
What is a Smart Object?
A Smart Object is a special type of layer where the pixels are protected in an envelope of sorts. When sized down, the pixels are not damaged. Deke shows you how to import images into Photoshop as a Smart Layer. In this example, he uses two portraits of a model, kept as dng files.
Resizing Smart Objects
With a Smart Object, you can commit changes, and resize at a later time. Deke shows us this by enlarging the model's photo, whose size was matched to the canvas upon import.
Remove background with blending mode
You might notice a seam in the image where the two images come together. To get rid of the white background so that the images blend together, change the layer's blend mode to Multiply.
Adjust lighting of a Smart Object
Sometimes, Smart Objects need light adjustments. Double click the Smart Object, and the image will pop up in a new window based on its file format. Since we are working in RAW, the RAW adjustment window pops up. Standard pixel-based images would open as editable pixels in a new window.
Apply blending modes for legible text
Deke shows us how to apply text effects so that the copy is dark against a white background, and light against dark backgrounds. He starts by inverting the colors, then changing the layer blend mode to Invert. This creates distasteful colors, apply more blending modes and adjust levels to achieve a desired look.

" For the first step here we're gonna go ahead and apply a hue saturation adjustment to that layer we can do that. By going down here too -- by quite icon I'm present an option here -- better ways that I can go ahead and name this guy has a created. Go and choose hue saturation."
" An example -- option I'm getting a new layer dialogue box. All called is a new color peseta Robin of color turn on this check box very important -- previously agreed clipping masks that we're just affecting the text but the fact. We'll get the adjustments Powell's appearance is for you get a dialogue box and CS three whatever reduce the saturation. To zero. Which did nothing. Wanted to do nothing for why what is the task yes. What is it to thickness -- I'm just you know just. Aspirin my. This stuff with it look but look if I were to get rid of the clipping group right there it's definitely not -- saturation I saw him do that so here's the problem. Gotta go back to detect player. And I'll double click on it. -- got these five check boxes I don't expect you understand where everything's doing here these two top guys. Are useful if a blend mode or an adjustment layer something like that isn't working at the way it should. And you can just go ahead and say you know between -- to be me just -- turn them on and off to check out what's gonna happen if I turn on. And then turn this doubt that didn't make any difference let's try this guy instead of turning off. It did make a difference in -- what it's saying is instead. Doing whatever it did before it's gonna go ahead it what what it was trying to do before is to remove this saturation from the text and then. Apply different -- night announcing into any good because Texans like to there was no saturation remove this way. It's applying the difference -- first and being -- in the center is doing what we want but the astronauts -- box click okay. Right now. We'll go ahead and add another -- this time. I want levels you could go with something like threshold to do a black or white you know what this period to be light in this area to be -- the idea. But I want a little bit -- up pops a little -- married there. But you will have the option key down -- can a Mac and all they'd be your wife and it does allow me to name the layers are created used previously agreed clipping masks for an important turn them on. So we're just affecting the tax system lose got a topics and the choice. He period because the text there was Regis yeah so all right to check this out skipped the adjustments move over. Let's go ahead and drag this over -- making the dark darker here and I'll make. Light lighter like so. So we're basically it's either white or black proposition with a little bit of softness in this area right here is we'll have a little bit of gray drop off they'll just be nice for some. Nationalism now check this out against attacks later. And I will still move tool just for -- text layers active participant drag this ram is gonna -- anything behind it on the fly and gorgeous."
" And this program onto maneuver. So that's it that's -- it should Martin. So the thing is now how does but -- those smell. You know it smells awful but we are working on -- now -- Area map. -- to work -- the product elicited. Scrutinizes good job it a lot of stuff that went on there and I have always said -- I was only. -- But. I always say it is these all those little controls and -- lot of different because.
So that's pushing a button here pushing a button there that you usually something's gonna we're completely so it's a question going to an experiment in people -- time people governments to policies -- up but he's. And all the time we have -- with -- SA and secure and that's it exactly by giving them plane focuses stuff work it's playing that's how you learn. Nowadays anything you'd like to see on the show and he's just can't get it biplane send me an email them the bird at revision3.com. And -- to check out the forums at revision3.com forward slash font really -- discussions about the film. Who knows maybe even influence futures up. Thanks again to crystal last -- out beautiful background and it. And back and again thanks for the -- can imagine my site. Sure -- receive it it's good -- that benefit. It didn't dot com. -- got pride and kind of stuff you can -- and links to all the places we've used up from the and the whole bunch of them do. -- think Scott on Wednesday bonds and yes yes and yes. But -- wrote like 4006 on the -- yesterday I don't wave that go from way back. Hope for a Bible. Big fat book. But this much is good but the hot topic on look at all of so. I hope it turns out this remembrances and play as greater than Leonard and if you want your stuff back here and all --"
" come -- really beautiful masterpiece he wants you back here that are designed to -- certain revision3.com. And your background has to be passed to be -- should be on no teleprompter and it has to be twelve megabytes of them play pixels and they JPEG's. Thank you for watching this show and I hope she begins next."
