Panoramic Stitching, Stacking and Blending in CS4 (Part 3 of 3)
Monday, January 12th, 2009 running time 21:02
Adobe's John Nack joins Bert to demonstrate new panoramic stitching and stacking features in CS4, including auto-blending, 3D perspectives and depth of field extension. Also, learn to build your own custom workspace with Configurator.
This week, these new Adobe Photoshop CS4 features are discussed:
Auto-blending in Panoramic Photo Stitching
Photoshop CS4 stitches images with auto blending, which eliminates vignette rippling in panoramic photos - a huge step up from CS3.
Auto-Stack Panoramic and HDR images in Bridge
In Bridge, you can automatically stack together panoramic and HDR images using Stacks > Auto Stack Panorama. Bridge finds matching pixel patterns and overlaps, then uses the auto-stack command to stitch properly. You can then hand the image off to Photoshop for retouching.
360 Degree Stitching
The 3D tools, such as Spherical Panorama, can create a 3D 360 degree environment from panoramic stills shot on a swiveling tripod, putting the viewer in the center of the perspective. With some touchups using the healing brush tool, artifacts can be eliminated, creating a seamless spherical photo. This is demonstrated using the San Jose, CA Adobe campus basketball court.
Depth of Field Extension
Detecting the focal point in a series of images is now possible, exemplified using a macro shots of an insect. The sharpest coordinate is automatically detected from each image in the shallowly focused set of photos, then blended together to create an entirely synthesized, crisp single image. Select all the layers > Edit > Auto-Blend Layers > Stack Images with Seamless Tones and Colors.
Configurator: Custom Photoshop Toolbars
Configurator is a free and soon-to-be open source application, and functions like a set of Legos to create custom Photoshop toolbars. For the first time, since Adobe now leverages Flash technology, you can build your own toolbars/panels relevant to your type of work, such as individuals who work only in video, web, or painting. Simply turn on or off the tools you need or don't need. Defined configurations are accessible via Windows > Extensions. Download Configurator from Adobe Labs.

Good to have you back again some -- for yeah just limited him a little."
" Clouds and an -- thank you for the very kind intro. So hopefully help column went up and -- some interesting stuff and so I figured you know we've already talked about lots of them recordings from some with Photoshop CS for. -- performance and three east can robbery age. Today I thought to be fun to show some of these panorama creation features so. What are things -- was most popular with CS three what are all the new things around automatically aligning and blending together multiple images. And now with CS -- we think a lot of core enhancements make it faster easier and more power. So if I don't -- excellent that feet all right so what are the things that them. I actually helped uncover I had kind of a cheap zoom lens frankly when I first got -- Com was you engaged -- you know around the edges here images and that makes it hard for the software to stitch things together. I would find that in my skies I would sometimes get the sort of rippling where the blending was. Pretty effective it was a 100% I have to go and kind of like dodge and burn those regions. Well now. The engineers figured out that if you align multiple images. You can actually figure out -- okay how much fall off is there. And automatically get rid of that. So you actually have to do anything special Photoshop just create your panorama of the way he would let me show an example so these where -- Some source familiar shopping for diversity alliance Irish photographer. And you can see there's a sort of them. Restoration you know this this rippling that's going on and that's because just the the natural way the light falls off on the -- line in my PC that. You can get rid of most of them and see history. But. Again there were cases where you couldn't you do -- manually touching we'll CS where this automatically deal with it so this is -- station's history. Here's the identical set of images stitched -- work. You -- right so without even applying the -- just got rid of all of those artifacts and so you know it's a 12 punch the better the alignment. The better the -- going to be. Really simple don't have to learn anything it just works better. Let me show you another cool feature with regard to. Automatically. Creating parents so on the go ahead and just reset. This folder of shafts. Sorority. Or even playing with this little bit. When I go out and you know just be on vacation -- to walk around in -- Baltic -- to take individual shots are kind of mix a bunch of pilgrims in there. The one of the things that's can be a little time consuming us. You know even though it's really just a couple step process and Photoshop to kick off creation of a pan out. You still have to go through and say okay I want these five images came to one panel you know way to do something come back okay don't want these six images do another one. Well -- bridge. Under the tools menu you can actually. Choose to automatically. Stacked together. Panorama an HD our source images so the latest before idea that showed that you know I can go through here and -- if you will these guys go together. In these guys probably go together and these guys are probably. Individual. So under this -- like he's honest act panorama. And bridge is actually going to run the same man to look at weird pixels of Atlanta and it's -- going to figure out hey this is probably one group this is another group. And it's going to create stacks forming in bridge. It does that for both parents and for high dynamic range. Images what you're doing a bracket a series of photos. Again bridge can handle that. The cool thing is that once it's done taking a look. There's another command under the tools menu and in bridge which lets me handoff all of those ones to Photoshop. And so -- a little longer than usual on these. The neat thing now is let's say you know Asia 200 images you know all afternoon. You can run as one command auto stack them. And then just choose. Process stacks of Photoshop just walk away from your computer and it's going to come out with however many. Panel analyst at the end that it detected. So it's really nice automated process. -- you know. But we went out nothing feels longer than a few seconds when he -- the slow progress where. We can we can always there we can I'm gonna cut out a little bit of this time that's going on here ganache your. Why can't stop -- some. I was joke if you grab little progress party -- going to Mexico fast. -- just keep telling yourself that into. We'll go ahead and and just jump. Processor canceling. PM what Wallace doing that let's let's jump to Photoshop. And down. And look at a few things so. Here are some images on stitched together there were shot on the Adobe basketball court actually the basketball court a known fact. Who knew right yeah. So set -- tripod I -- the three buildings in San -- Stitch these together you can onto 360 degrees -- in Photoshop CS -- something couldn't do in the past. But we'd like to get rid of some of the artifacts that have shown up. Who want to do is maybe send us out with like quicktime VR or use the new three capabilities in flash C want to make this a spherical. Panorama what people navigate around. What I can do is actually leverage the 3-D system is he has for so under the treaty menu I'm gonna choose to. Create eighty the new shape from the slayer. And the agency can actually now this two dimensional image -- all kinds of things cylinder -- It's lots of fodder for other -- there but this this is gonna choose spherical panorama. And what's gonna do is basically put create a virtual camera. And it's going to stick our viewpoint in there and it's I'm gonna put us in the middle of that scene. So now I'm gonna grab my. 3-D object rotation tool. And then I can see we're actually living inside of the middle. Of that treaty sphere and so if I looked down. There's the tripod -- Adobe logo. I can look up and I can see there's -- Xena and it's not exactly perfect you know that the stitching was cool bit. But there's just a bit of overlap. Based on the exposure differences in the source images. So hasn't mentioned in previous shows. We really want to extend the two. And what you do those and 3-D and doesn't have to be you know painting flames on the hood of a car it could just be Kate -- want to clone something out. In my circle panorama or may -- want to take in another photo I talk. And just put that over top and blended it. In this case -- and -- just simple and quick I'm gonna take my spot healing brush. Remember now CS for you can just drag to re sized brush since holding control option on my Mac here. And move it over this -- point. And you know just a real simple. And it. And mother think about it for a few seconds and -- in pretty short order to get rid of most of that artifact. Now I can go in and do a few more strokes in here to really I get it exactly right. But you can imagine if I had to do that in the online platform -- to get them right would be really tough in fact -- show you here is the in my original photo regional -- changed anything just done now peeled off that's here. And you can see appear at the top all of these little dots are what I just did with that one time. So it's sort of like if you think of a globe you know the stuff -- top -- kind of distorted -- if I wanted to get rid of this tripod let's say it would be much much easier to do it. In the spherical form. Then if I had to go in here and you don't manually do exactly into. I was very nicely which has traveled around there. Cool so there's you know whether you're doing you know just traditional panorama stuff. Or whether you want -- now can and you know take it that much further with Photoshop extended. There's a lot of meat potatoes stuff in CS four for -- creators. In fact foolishly one other thing that. Sort of builds on what we did with with panorama which is -- field extension so. We said hey you know. I can okay we can align these images together we can blame them either some other interesting things we can do besides just making pan -- us. And we thought what about what if you could attacks the sharpest point in his image. And you can -- kind of pull out the sharpest point across multiple images. So excuse me here we've got this handsome with a guy. It's an answer in a shot at the macro lens and them to get enough play in their often these extremely extremely shallow depth of field. So this a series of JPEG's that we stick them together as one Photoshop file. And what you'll see as I switched from image to image. Is the focal point is moving backwards and now his eyes are in focus but his nose is dropping out in the -- go further and further back. You'll see that that focal point move. Well I can. Comedy that I can actually pull out the sharpest point simply by selecting all these images. Going under and it. Choose an auto blend layers. And then -- static images and want to hit okay. Photoshop going to run across that hold data sat is gonna find the sharpest pointed each given coordinate and it's gonna make that into one. Image not just in the interest of doing a quick demo not going to let that run well do instead is -- from. Excuse me before. After. So -- the process results. That I I've run you know takes maybe five minutes to two run probably don't want to sit here and watch the progress bar. But again you know you really can go from these series -- images to one synthesized crisp image. -- So. With."
" That. We talk about one other subject this kind of near dear to my heart which is. You know I'm a product management Photoshop. People come to us all the time with great ideas great suggestions. I hear just about everything the one thing I've never heard anybody say is. Is it possible for you make Photoshop more complicated. And ideally bigger and especially with stuff I don't I don't use. No one ever said that right what what people say is hey I only use X percentage of the -- But for me you know that's that's great that's what I mean and I need more in there and everybody says that. And they say don't mind if you do stuff for these guys just don't get it on my way. Right so Democrat guy just get the -- there and doing video enemy and -- that. Web stuff. I'm painting just give -- the -- features and so. What would come up with. Is something -- configure your. And now for the first time because we leverage flash technology you can actually build your own panels of palettes. In Photoshop CS -- So you can if you have a copy of flash or flex builder. You can just develop your own panels. Trouble is. The overlap between really good flash developers and Photoshop experts is."
" Really small there's like you know just let one touch point and so we wanted to make it much more democratic where anybody like bird who knows. Photoshop super well. Can say hey this is everything I need to get rid of everything else I'm gonna pull it into one spot you can even in some training if you want. And -- show you how that works. So. Let's go ahead in -- time. Launch. -- But do we can figure. So configure here is a little tiny application you can download it from labs to -- it -- com auction for configure. And it's just a really simple concept of Lagos so to speak for kind of knocking together your own panel. So really simple instructions I don't see him want to make -- panel I could call it. You know hurt. And I can now just drag in exactly the things I want Photoshop so I can go and say are -- wanna brush tool. They didn't want. Yes -- my healing tools. And I'm simply as a -- like the with the satellite goes bringing together. What I want so I can Italy's top level if you wanted to make just to your own custom toolbar you can do that you know just make up a little vertical strip for horizontal. You can do the same with many commands -- either search for community can go any can say hey you know there's. Some really. You know. Common commands and always using actually want to you know bring -- not even showing content aware scaling which is probably the single most. Snazzy feature exists. I think you're gonna see so much of that from from everybody else you don't need it for me to me the really cool -- wanted to put that in. And then where -- let's get pretty interest things you can also do things like drag and actions you know so there's a common series of events want to run. You can do that you can drag and scripts. You know you can drag and taxed so if I want in you know let's say efforts creating a panel. And wants to put in some knowledge about how these things can actually type that in this well. And lastly you can also drag and things like video. So you could even have a panel which is playing this show inside Photoshop. Together with some tools and and knowledge about how to how to use it. So you can do some pretty pretty nifty stuff let me assure you -- exported panel. Front of our son Colin Smith from Photoshop carefully made. When I create these and export didn't show up under my extensions menu. Under windows. Menu because of -- pull up this up PS cafe. This is actually a whole concept that colony to bring the other all of the selection oriented stuff in Photoshop. We're not online -- otherwise you'd actually see streaming video where he teaches you how to do selections and Photoshop. And so the neat thing here is you don't have to worry about Photoshop being so overwhelming hopefully you can go to and experts say hey I want to click on. You know the -- mind all right way to work. You can go and turn off all the menu items you don't need can bring up the stuff you do need you can really clean up the interface. And really custom tailored to how you work. And it's a free tool again its labs dot Adobe dot com tools called configure. You're my blog some great examples of how words -- videos. Down going yet. And it's actually mean open source project so. Anybody can contribute and we really eager to hear what people want to see done with it right."
" Those. The URLs to -- right there on your screen right now. Make sure you visit and check the thing that's pretty cool right. Cool I'm glad you came and give everybody an introduction this is -- now it's my job next. Bunch of episodes that. Expand on this stuff and show what they can do please do yeah yeah we'll cook will collaborate off offline -- that's always good to see hopefully. I'll see you know what he's recently became a father and now he's gonna be a father against -- policy jump from I don't know I -- but you'll still see man you know that's my blogs I can't leave the house Nancy -- pictures and -- idea. There demo files that's you know thump educators that he really cool that he's here. And I'll be guys aren't a lot of stuff there and and hopefully was an inspiration to go and I start playing around with programs you can do. As we learned is that there pushed a button is he with a U. Number machine -- happen to quit on him. But play. Be adventurous and pushed open -- when they get it. If there's anything you'd like to see on the shelves of the you've been struggling with -- can't figure out in your own email me at certain vision through dot com and also you can check out the forms. At revision3.com. Forward slash -- you can join discussions about the show and maybe even influence the future show. My book is on the screen. Be my guest go through the to a few pages that your bookstores he would if -- all about talking about McCain's now I don't a lot of tricks that you see here on the show. Again I want to thank you to offer this incredible background we have via this. And if you want your artwork to be back here and I'm sure you do remember to email me your designs and divert a revision3.com. And your background should measured 1280 by seven point pixels and they JPEG. So. Again play a best way to learn. Hopefully I'll see you next week."

The Panoramic Stitching seems to be a pretty cool feature of CS4. I haven't had the chance to try it out yet.
