Break out of police issued handcuffs!

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 – running time 09:58
Because sooner or later, every scammer finds himself in a pair of handcuffs.

This week: no lie, we learn how to escape from police-issue handcuffs!

We all know about trick handcuffs that you can get from the toy store... but how hard is it to escape from 100% real, genuine police-issue handcuffs?

It turns out that with a little help from magician and escape artist Daniel Martin, it's not hard at all.

Daniel joins Brian for the first of several episodes teaching the real tricks and techniques used to escape from sticky situations. In this first episode, Daniel explains three different methods to escape from police-issue handcuffs.

Disclaimer: We're pretty sure it's not illegal to know HOW to escape from handcuffs... but we're 100% sure it's illegal to actually escape when detained by law enforcement (just sayin).

According to Daniel, the three best ways to pick open a pair of handcuffs are:

#1 - Key. This one sounds obvious, but most people don't know that just about all handcuffs use the exact same design of key. Just keep one in your back pocket, and you're set.

#2 - Shim. Smaller and much thinner than a key, a shim is easy to conceal and easy to use.

b>#3 - Paperclip. It's not just a clich? from action movies... you can use a garden-variety paperclip to escape from real handcuffs, and Daniel will show us how.

Don't forget to submit your Scam School Domain Smack!

After this episode, I decided that it would be appropriate to tell the embarrassing story of how I learned to pick handcuffs:

I bought a pair of cheap, metal handcuffs when I was young and I decided that I was going to learn how to pick them. They were the single locking type, so they had a tendency to cut off circulation. They had little release levers on the sides, but I decided that I was too cool for that, so I immediately filed them off. Then I played around with the hand cuffs for several days, without learning anything about picking them. One day, while I was home alone, I put them on, extremely tight, and then attempted to take them off. I kinda jammed them, and then the cheap ass key broke off in the lock. I spent an hour walking around swearing while my hands turned white, and lost feeling, before I found a junk mail credit card, and cut a sliver off of it (all while still wearing the damn things). I finally was able to use it a shim and open the cuffs, which were immediately relegated to the nearest trashcan, after I got done dancing around, swearing, as the blood slowly flowed back into my hands.

The moral of the story:
Necessity is the mother of Houdini...wait that isn't right.

Brian, can you please update the domainsmack website? You mentioned the new entries in this episode but the leader board has not been updated.

Thanks,

This one is bound to be useful during the riots that happen around here all the time.

...

Um, what I meant to say was "impressing my friends". Yeah, that was it.

As for the DomainSmacks shown in the video, loved the first one.

First I'd like to say if Dan Martin wanted to do a bunch of these, like with the Strongman specials, that would be really cool. Something like "How to open a bike lock with a pen!" and "How to open many combination and pad locks using the a beer can!" (and maybe throw in a nudge to a sponsor there). No offense to Dennis Rogers but the "practicality" of these types of thing kinda make them a whole lot cooler.

Oddly enough, about a week ago reading this Wired.com article inspired me to try and get into lock picking a bit.

I thought "any shmuck with a lock pick set can do it, I'm gonna use paper clips!" so I immedietely began researching locks(good to have a basic understanding of different kinds of locks, since as soon as they showed the clear lock, I already knew those exact two ways they were gonna try to open it). And by researching, I mean just googling it, and looking for videos on youtube. There is actually so much information about the subject, that is really all you need(maybe throw in some how-to sites' guides, too).

After doing that, and messing around with some old lock, I was actually able to get it down pretty easily to a point where it would only take a few seconds(I was using a 4 tumbler pad lock to practice, and most home locks are 5, but it's kind of a small difference), and with paper clips, no less. So it's actually pretty easy if you know what you're doing a little, and in that sense it's actually easier than what Hollywood shows. The only thing is, studying up a bit is pretty necessarry, but I definitely reccomend trying this for any Scam Schoolers out there that like learning really cool and useful skills in a short ammount of time. Also, if you're gonna try to do this for a couple hours straight, your fingers will most likely hurt for a day or two, but it's worth it in my oppinion. Another thing to keep in mind is that although the paperclip can turn the lock the initial little bit it needs in order to be picked, all the trouble I had was due to an inability to actually turn the lock open once it was picked, so having a screwdriver around might help, even though none of the videos or guides mention it.

P.S. Thanks to Brian teaching the Human Blockhead, which I usually use a paperclip for(it's really really thin, not actually sharp but looks it enough to freak people out, usually around somewhere, and you build some tension straightening it), I can now pick both my nose and a lock using paperclips...

Oddly enough, about a week ago reading this Wired.com article inspired me to try and get into lock picking a bit.

I've recently been searching lock picking myself.. mostly youtube vids and I found a large vid on bit torrent. the "bump key" method seems abit "hokey" to me but havent tried it. And RE: combination padlocks... in high school me and a buddy would steal the padlocks off of lockers in a contest on who could get the most. Any non-Master (combination lock) you could just "bang" open by lifting it up so that the dial was against the handly of the locker handle and giving an upward strike against the back of it and 95% of the time the lock would pop. I'd say between us we got 1000 locks in 6 months. yes we were mischevious kids back hen

In reply to metacore:

P.S. Thanks to Brian teaching the Human Blockhead,

I havent tried the Blockhead thing because I've got sinus problems due to putting various powders up my nose in my youth. Not sure if that would be a benefit trying the blockhead.. or a detriment and dont wanna risk damage if such extracurricular activities would cause polyps/shrinking or enlarging of the Maximus cavity.. Anyone know about that?
