All you need is a match, two pint glasses and a quarter, and you'll be drinking free all night!
We've said it before, and we'll say it again: the tricks win you goodwill, but the puzzles win you good beer!
The Setup: turn an empty pint glass upside down, and place a "treasure" inside (in this case, a $5 bill). Set another empty pint glass upside down next to it. Finally, set up the "alarm system": a match, suspended between two pints.
The Challenge: Liberate Abe Lincoln from his pint-glass prison, without setting off the "alarm system". You can use anything on the table, but you can't touch the match, you can only touch one glass, and the moment the match loses contact with the pint glass holding the money, you lose. Can you do it?
The Solution: Use another match to light the head of the "alarm system" match. Just after it flares up, blow it out. You'll find the match is now tenuously fused to the pint glass. With a steady hand, you'll be able to lift the pint glass, taking the match along with it. Remove the bill, replace the glass...and order yourself a free beer!

yes, yes. that makes so much more sense, pulling-it-off wise, but less dramatic, maybe, as a "doh" to the scamee.

I actually tried this trick out at a party the other night with great success. I'm sure the alcohol factor was in my favor, but I nonetheless managed to scam six people without fail. :D
One thing I noticed while doing it is that it's much easier (for me at least) if you place the head of the match on the glass you don't move rather than the one you do. Ultimately it comes out to the same thing, but there's less chance that the match falls off accidentally while lifting the glass since it stays stationary. This also makes it easier to carefully put the glasses back into the "armed" position when you're done, a cool way to end it I think.

You bring up a good point: On the show, we use the shorthand of "scamming free drinks" as an obvious primary objective, but the truth is that all of these gags are really just vehicles to get what you want... whatever you want.
It could be a free drink, it could be the attention of a cutie at the bar, or it could be an icebreaker at an awkward social gathering. The point is: don't just think it's about the drinks... It's about your chance to shift the social dynamic no matter where you are.
Glad you're digging the show!

Hi Brian, I've been watching since episode 1 and I love the show. You are a fantastic host.
I was a little disappointed this week when I figured it out right away, but I was amazed when I showed this episode to my brother (who is always brighter than I am) he could only think of the pushing method. I might actually try this with my friends next time, because if my brother could not figure it out, I doubt my friends would be able to.
Unfortunately so far I have yet to get the chance to scam any drinks, because, at the risk of sounding smug, a few of my friends always buy my drinks for me, hoping to get me so drunk that I would show them my boobs or something. (Sadly for them, I would for sure pass out first before I would show them anything :P ) But I still perform the human chimney and the jack-o-lantern sometimes to impress my friends.

everything washes right off. I've done it with glasses I had recently used before... you just need to wipe clean the place the match head touches.

I was just wondering the same thing. Will the residue on the glass wash right off or will it permanently leave a mark on the glass?

I'm serious man, I want to see Brian Brushwood scam something other than a beer off of someone, like maybe 20 dollars (something of higher value).
I wonder how high you can go before they are no longer interested in the scam.

I still can't believe that you can get these people to buy drinks for you. I mean, haven't you run into someone who told you --- "no, I'm not going to buy you a drink to see the trick".
