Candy Nuke
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 running time 04:37
What happens when you set a gummy bear on fire? Total annihilation!
The solid Sodium Chlorate will be heated with a blow torch or Bunsen burner until it melts, this takes about 30-45 seconds. Then drop in your gummy item or other high sucrose candy. The reaction will be immediate as soon as it touches the melted liquid so be sure to stand roughly two feet from the test tube.
The flame color and power of the reaction can differ based on certain salts or even metal shavings.
If you would like to prevent the gummy candy from sticking to the side of the test tube you can use a larger test tube. That will let it slide down easily. Or you could use a long narrow object to push it down. You can also choose to use a stale gummy bear for no risk of sticking. (Open package and let it sit out for a bit).
Remember fresh ones that are sticky and might not slide all the way down the test tube can be covered in the salts to make the different reactions.
Burning just the gummy bear will give off intense yellow white light and heat.
A gummy bear is full sucrose, a source of carbon and energy. Add it in and you have fuel, oxygen and heat = ingredients for fire. The reaction is incredible to witness as it gets stronger and more powerful, producing MORE heat which produces MORE oxygen, annihilating the contents.
