DIY - Beer Robot
Monday, May 11th, 2009 running time 30:05
We show you how to build a beer delivery robot that comes to you when the time is right and boss is gone. This works for other beverages too but beer is something everyone likes.
Robots are great. They do what you want without complaint. So instead of having a spouse or kin folk fetch you a cold one and complain when they bring it to you, why not build a robot that can do the same thing? Building off episode 40 we take everything we've learned and added the know project board how from episode 102 to build a robot cooler that brings beer at the appointed time. Perfect for home or office... well after the boss leaves.

And use one of those Cisco it's."
" While you're there. So the first part this project is we're going install our tiny circuit onto our prototype in order. Like this -- I have a bunch of these at home which is by reusing is you can use -- we -- board you can use ADRs -- pick axes or whatever you want. We can't show every possible configuration issue answers to be focusing on this. For those and for those who have never before. I use any kind of integrated circuits integrated circuits always have a little did it on the top of them which basically says this is up. If there's not a physical damage if we look down on our stand here. I'm it's got a little -- more right there and basically that says this is up. So the replacing things on the board you know which is up service start replacing our timing circuit. On the bottom of our board."
" Just pops him like that. On and now we need to hook it up and give it both power and feedback to the input output circuits of these extent. So again it put the didn't hear the first thing we're gonna do is we're going to put in our timing and crystal. Com and it's kind officials are just tiny tiny little things it's really no thicker than a wire so it's very easy to lose so be careful with. With this and this goes between -- two and three. Are. Clock circuit so."
" Pin number one is always the upper left pin it and it goes around counter clockwise in the new 1234. 5678. So we're we're assembling or circuit is it's important to know which pins were talking to. So I know filled tends to and three with our little. Tightening crystal right here. And now we need to bring power. To the circuit and on our Carol explored. We have two types of power we have input power which is voltage in which could be a nine volt battery it could be in our case -- can use. Twelve -- coming from there the robot. We also have deregulated power so great here this is actually a voltage regulator. And it always gives a very clean fight bulls which coincidentally or not which coincidentally in fact. This integrated circuit runs on five -- scenario put a jumper between what's called dvd which is you're regulated voltage. And we're gonna put that over to pin number one. So now the integrated circuit has power. Now the circuit has to start talking to. The basic step and on this particular board you can see that this black strict here has the labels of pins zero through fifteen. The basics -- has sixteen inputs and outputs depending on which pick -- stamp or -- we know you're using. Depends on how many inputs and outputs you have. I o.s are always listening in Rogers so it's never one to sixteen it's always 0215. So now we need to talk to depend. And we're gonna put eight resist her. A 1000. Ohm resistor between. Pins zero. Of apparel export was put it to put it over eastern right here."
" And pin to six of the integrated circuit."
" So the nice thing about these kinds of prototype in words is as you can pop wires in. Quite easily. So we also need to run from pins. Five and seven. -- back to the integrated circuit so pin one in -- are apparel lacks basic stamp is gonna go to pin seven. Of our timing circuit. And -- To of our basic -- Is getting go to -- five. Of our time and answer it. -- cross these over. Okay. We're almost done. Now the next thing we need to do is we need to. Do it that. Timing circuit grounded. So it's got power to the circuit but that power -- then dead ends and needs to cycle back through to the ground of the final circuit. And sir going to do that with a little -- And we're gonna be needing some ground -- Current leader on for the blind follower so when I would do is I'm actually going to move. From here which is aground. -- up here. Which will be using later. And now are grounding tens over here. So now we've grounded out. Our pin. And finally we need one less thing is. What's to turn off domain controller. This. Will lose its memory and so we want it always know what time of day it is what day of the week it is so and so forth so it needs basically a little back up. Memories. And so what we're gonna do. Is on him eight we're gonna add three volts so. You can do three -- of -- ways in in this case I'm using two double A batteries and here's a double -- battery holder and just put two double A batteries. In this -- holder. So now we're gonna do is -- them read positively to the battery holder. They're going to put that against pin number eight. Are integrated circuit. Hillary take the ground. Are. Three volt battery holder Amber's gonna share the ground with the rest of the board and that will complete the circuit. So that's -- completed tiny circuit. But now we need to do is we need to finish this off by adding. All of the line following circuits up here is so if you'll notice we've got four leads now. What other things to know about. Color coded wires is is that they're no difference in terms of the actual wires color coding is used so that you the end user know you know what line is what. What I don't like about these QTI circuits is they change the standard which is really really really bad idea. Under all other circumstances if you're using a standard. Tri color of lead such as this. You'll find him first serve those force solar arrays for just about everything and in every instance except for these cute yeah I circuits black is negative. Red is positive current. And white is the actual data signal. So for whatever reason whoever came up with these cute yeah -- circuits has decided just to reverse that and red is now actually. The not the power but red is now the control the data current. The -- line. And white is now power which is really extraordinarily bad idea for people who have a lot of experience with this. So basically if you got a lot of experience with these kinds of cables being very careful what you're doing. So that you we remember that the standard color coordination is not. Red is power positive and white is data but those two have been reversed so when you're building your board keep that in mind. Another thing you can do is make your own cables using cheap inexpensive CDS -- myself I'd. Arrays which you can make for about fifteen cents I like to be strictly because they look a little bit better so it's gonna make the robot look a little bit nicer as it's following one. So now we have to do is we have to build up the circuit for. And we're gonna use little jumper pins and so now I'm gonna quickly assemble all of those as well as connect. Data input from the QTI cells back here. Today -- send that information back to remain micro controller. So -- product word force -- for using force sensors bring need to use for his reasons for 37. And and we've got the corresponding black lines right here so it's very easy for us to see on this particular board that we would use pins for 56 and seven and we have. Little black lines here we're hooked up to those using jumpers know you can get a jump percent for about ten bucks from a company like Jane co. It's in our case for he's he's jumpers. And he's jumpers are gonna go from those pins to our eventual header and some of popular had depends."
" And these header pins. They're going to allow us to quickly and easily. Installed. Are -- file in such as. Perfect if he should."
" All right so now we've connected all of our data points in which -- notice is is that on all of these jumper pins I'm sharing lines basically that just makes it easier. The you don't have to put it as many different jumper pins on this so these particular jumpers if you noticed these two were sharing in these two are sharing in the east were sharing. And what that means is that it's just easier to provide power and ground to all of the pins with out. Using too many extra. Jumper pins. I'm -- reduce red hook up our -- follower in the ring to do basic tasks of the system. To make sure that both Oliver -- following sensors are working as well as -- clock is working. So now we -- all of the basic electronics and now we want to do was one of programming to make sure that eight. It's going to take the date and time code and the couple -- after we turn to turn the power on and off. I'm in. So the first thing or do is we're gonna program. The liquor control here with -- with proper time. So the run this program. And now we want to set the date and time Serena and her. Basic information. Just currently. 2009. It is. May. Seven. It is Thursday as machines. The one in 24 hour. Because that's the way aero is currently 140 funds. Thirteen. 45. Bitterness at the time. Kate and analysts frontier displeased him we can see here that it's actually working properly. That the time is properly displayed according to which programs it now. Just like your clocks at home sometimes power goes -- the next images and her off. The power to the stamp and micro controller board but we've still got that two double A powered backup. Into the that timing chip and so hopefully it will stay. And the time should always keep track what time it is through that pattern back up which the last about a week maybe we can. It's more than enough time for us to have a beer at port 53 to get some turn off the power -- Now that's off. But the battery -- and still connected so the return back earns. You know let's go back Hillary check back on the screen and see. And hate it still displayed so we do know that. Not only does the timing chip still work. But we know that the battery backups to work so that. It even if the power of the robot is lost it will still always try to turn itself on every day act. 453. So now the next thing we need to do is -- our -- sensors in your little black and white sensors really their life and contrast sensors so even though my hand is very right. I can put my hand all the way over this and what that'll do is it'll block off all light in essentially mimic a black field. So now let's run that program. And so. What we're seeing here. Is did the different sensors for different sensors. And we're just giving -- pioneering field of zero or one depending on whether it's black and white so as I covered these you can see. We can get different. Readings -- and how I'm covering. Two different to different things as a as a cover. The sensors with my hand and block the light off of it I can cheat and into different different values here. So now we know that basically. Our micro controller works completely. All we've got to do is you can combine these two programs and then send power from here. Via pulse width modulation signal works the exact same as what we need or -- solar -- came up and said hey you have mail. We're doing the exact same thing except now we're sending incentive. Control to -- we're sending it to speed controller which is sort of like. For our robot. On the motor to gearbox in the speed controller together act fundamentally the same. As the -- which is much more bigger much more powerful and broken up into three components rather than having those three components combined. Into -- scenario take our robot or take. On our handy smaller cheaper. Speak controller for about power and -- to put all of these together. And see if it's the robot will move and hopefully I'm deliver -- casinos get."
" Tired shoot this video just check it out. -- Patrick is going to hook up to the motors and batteries to our speed controller and in the state controller. Just plugs right into the -- moments. The paralyzed port. Most of the other boards you can buy out there also have very similar three prong malice can plug into on the speed controller like this and then it's just a question. Making slight changes look with the program so that the robot knows when to stop at the end of the line. And then. Hopefully delivering a beer at 453 this afternoon so these of the two motor controllers just -- and put -- this is quite obviously mark -- exactly on and I have seen many many many speed controllers in my time hooked up. We're in reverse. And as soon as you turn the power on those things blow up it's really cool you lose all your magic smoke on my scene -- completely melt. I'm Jim in need of tech shop during last panel must -- things. Cooked off almost the controller to learn. And others that."
" So we're using the parallel ax. Tiny circuit code we're modifying and that's to have an alarm clock is natively Cumberland. We're using standard line following -- which is basically says that. Alignment should be two. Basically a standard of electrical tape. Covers two of these -- exactly and so than the other two sensors. I'm looking for ways to basically if the -- Lying comes over here now we know that it's covering these two sensors rather needs to and then the robot should turn it. And covered these two some basically. What's happening in terms of the programming is the robot always wants to have -- to censors seem black and outside to censors seem flight. Now what's all force sensors he -- because we do it happening for lack. T at the bottom so so the black line we're coming this in this in this the end to be solid black T and that tells you about a hot. When I see all four of you are black that tells me to stop."
" So what we can see we've got here is here we've got our or Circuit Court recession controlling on these things easier wires coming through the tour freshly installed amounted. Six. CS or -- which -- and attacked. The lines and see one to three for her adolescents -- here. And we've also got our clock shifts to monitor and now. The new -- controller less expensive. Scorpion XL speed controller is in here. And it gets its -- modulation signal from apparel export comes back in and that tells motors how fast to go in which direction. And and -- motors fact here are Chinese surplus. Joe motors com and then get their power from over here and it and of course we have the main battery pack and -- battery packed. Was the battery pack from the Joomla or itself we just look at out of that to a lower housing. And then put some leads on it so now we basically have a fully working robot which is autonomous and can follow lines and can turn itself on. Act 453 -- or if you -- so that I get me here at fort."
" System viewers to use seatbelts are less likely to die people that's -- Revision 3 has done it -- hundreds of state and local law enforcement highway safety officials across the nation. We're launching an aggressive campaign its click it or ticket folks. We gotta crackdown on those seat belt use that's gonna reduce highway fatalities and injuries that dependent on the hour the date belt -- past your -- very regularly. 31 points.
31 points. " Not disappear for a robot but if all introduction to building in -- you can -- on my fault lines following whereabouts which is one of the events -- the international -- games this June 12 through fourteenth in San Francisco if you built one of these robots. Episode 103 - DIY - Beer Robot [Discussion]
We show you how to build a beer delivery robot that comes to you when the time is right and boss is gone. This works for other beverages too but beer is something everyone likes.
Watch / download here.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite my postings on the past episode discussion thread I'm very pleased with how things are progressing, especially on how they're using past episodes as stepping stones for this episode.
Have to agree on the wire colour though, someone needs a good slap over swapping the white/red, but with those plugs you can physically swap the wires over to the unwritten standard of red=+vcc & white=signal by bending the tabs back on the plastic connectors and pulling the wires out, flattening the tabs and pushing the connectors back in to the correct positions.
The bit that interested me most was the DS1302 timing chip, I've been wondering how to easily add a realtime clock to future projects and that looks like the solution, but backup battery time of just over a week on 2x AA's? how's that possible when watch batteries can last years (I had one last 5 years, even with it measuring the temperature every 2 seconds).
Perhaps a future episode could be one that integrates this with episode 76 - DIY RFID Beer Safe so you have the robot hidden under your desk, then at the right time it goes out on it's own accord and picks up a cool one from the RFID beer safe and brings it back for you :)

This show seems to be getting back into the groove. Yippee....
Some of us did not think there was a holy war about which plaform is best. We all discussed various platforms as to their pluses and minuses. It just shows we all know that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Being an open source proponent, you should still try to keep an open mind. Quite a few closed source devices eventully get an open source alternative. Though maybe Tekzilla could do at least part of a show about all the platforms available for doing such things. Linuxdevices.com and Windowsfordevices.com are good sources to find and keep up with the products to possibly meet those needs. We like to use whatever gets the job done at the best price. Some people have a lots of spare robotic boards and some people have other platforms to accomplish the same thing. Actually some of the open source devices I have seen are a wee bit over priced for our family budget, so we use what we have instead.

Dave, I’m one to give credit when credit is due, and this episode deservers credit. This episode is true systm, a retune to its former glory. Actual electronics and the discovery of a new useful IC. Dave just promise me that you’ll seize Rodger and Patricks studio keys and hide their computers.
Now if you had used a PICAXE……………………kidding ;) .
From some of your comments on the show it seams that I (and others) caused some offence, I apologise, that wasn’t my intention.
Keep up the good work.
Mike,

So did Coors come to you guys asking you to do this, or did you come up with the idea first and then went shopping for a sponsor? That sipping of the beer with the logo carefully facing towards the camera was like straight out of the Wayne's World movie; the only difference was that that scene was satire.
I also have concerns with you guys promoting the drinking of alcohol mere minutes before getting in your car to go home, and then having the balls to run a "Click It or Ticket" ad in the very same episode, as if seatbelts are the problem. You have safety disclaimer for the littlest things in most of your episodes, yet don't even mention that you shouldn't drink and drive? This show was literally about downing one 7 minutes before driving.

Yea, you can't here the satire in my voice. None.

Wow. And here I thought my wife always picked me up and drove me home after the shoots. I guess I went out and got a second car without telling her.
I wish I was as omniscient as you!

a small mistake
Hi there, just that the folks that want to use the video the crystal that was used is not 32 MHz it is 32.768 kHz crystal
hope that this will help

Dave makes this project look way too easy though. I thought for sure that the robot would not make it around the last corner.
