Dynamic DNS: Access Your Home Computer Remotely
Monday, February 9th, 2009 running time 20:40
Want access to your files stored at home? How about hosting a home web server? Static IPs are expensive, if you can even get one. We set up Dynamic DNS instead!
'Back in the day' if you wanted to run a web server, email server, or FTP server from home you needed a static IP... and they often added quite a bit to the monthly bill from your ISP.
Dynamic DNS, however, lets you use a DHCP assigned address -the kind you probably have at home- just like a static IP address. That means if you have a broadband connection and sign up for a free account at DynDNS you can run a website or FTP server straight from your home.
We show you how to set it up on this episode of Systm, along with a quick and easy way to share files you and your friends can access through any browser: HFS, the HTTP File Server!

" Now -- home routers for example a run and the thrill from where my around the bottom political modern home routers actually -- rule except that -- Like Indian us. Did -- dyslexic for free rather clients and so why do if you are gonna run a these TP servers FTP server whatever server. You are gonna need to set up port forwarding on your route or I assume you have a route or fire wall please don't you have firewall the outer sort of your home server. You're gonna need to sit up port forwarding and routers to access a web server -- he -- GP FTP easily port 21. And to basically pass through those packets is normally firewalls kind of free gal at outgoing. Web services are FTP services. So -- dynamic."
" Guinness -- up breaking in -- running we've got our. URLs typed in placing got to resolve something got to connect to something's a little look at it's a fast. It's basically super simple super tiny super easy windows PC ET two. And you install it you link it to the URL in the IP address on the system. And you have a phone use and folder from disk isn't what it does it actually makes it available so falling on my documents. I can make my music folder available and hit OK on that one. And I'll do a real folder because it should be big files it's my music. And when a remote access in the -- and the case -- wondering why we and it's it's important thirteen thousand -- year old eagle I need. IP savvy Canon guy or gal their homelands and be -- port -- port thirteen thousand has port eighty is blocked for outgoing on the network connected -- important thirteen thousand which are random legions. Is not so."
" Now when you leave that remotely you get something like this this is the basic. And user interface this -- online music iTunes has probably going to be pretty much nothing available on site there examined. Putting him on -- seeing everything go to my important backup folder right click. And I could save my Supreme Court document down to my desktop to replace the ones are there."
" News. Well that's all well and good but what if you want to upload -- someone needs to send you something import or."
" I want to be able to remotely upload this to my machine itself you know basically enable a file very basically folder for -- so we're gonna -- to. And files actually were -- and add files are -- to you could -- you. And a folder from the disk in this case I'm going to give -- new folder. Make new folder we'll call it up includes. A balloons to remote. It's. Now when I close that end I need to make it real folder it's really critical to make any real folder -- working on making -- real folder. Am I right click and outflows from mode I'm gonna go in there and send it to upload. And you can do two things you can let anyone upload or you basically can create it locked down account for that. Creating a locked down account discrete if you don't want anyone be able for weird stuff and shame pronounced we is -- sort of obscurity security good security. And we sent up the upload your -- when I logged into this remotely."
" Human refresh this and don't do this little machine here with me -- an up close remote. I'm going to. Basically you pick a files so what are we do with the file Mozilla server. Now open ads and kind of progress -- just for fun. And oops -- F five in had to file audience seems to dispute. Before and there is and wanted to include file button. Wish you the progress is occurring and these are really cool is it that well just as the -- locally. You get the idea it's magic to watch the up close."
" Holder for a second right so there remotely office machines. Decision is so keep an eye on this folder that we have right here."
" Okay."
" I probably should pick the smaller files it's like 67 kilo bits per second over might really weird connection in any case so that idea and -- easy to configure watts of alternatives did you NASA dislike because it just works and has been working for a long time. Episode 90 - Dynamic DNS: Access Your Home Computer Remotely [Discussion]
Want access to your files stored at home? How about hosting a home web server? Static IPs are expensive, if you can even get one. We set up Dynamic DNS instead!

I absolutely love these new Tekzilla episodes...
Already have a static IP, could have had 8 static IPs at no extra cost but didn't need em, pointless having so many on a DSL connection which has a (slow) standard 256kbits/s upload rate.

Hmmm this is really an awsome option. Call me paranoid but arnt you opening up your home network to dyn dns? I mean yea its prob illegal for them to monitor your home network but like im not sure i like the idea of all my traffic like bank transactions en stuff "possibly" being monitored by a third party. God forbid I ever did something one day and dyn dns is asked to leak info on what ive been up to. I mean my isp is one thing. Im paying for thier service but i dont trust dyn dns. Im not paying them any money to cover my ass on anything and Im pretty sure somewhere in their terms of agreement at the drop of a hat they give your info away. I mean who wants to liable for anything? Certainetly not a company like dyn dns.

I think you're a little confused here. How would they monitor your activities when none of your packets are going though their network.

The DynDNS service just allows you to choose a name which will always point to your IP address no matter if it's static or dynamic.
ie, anyone connecting to [yourname].hobby-site.com will connect directly to your IP address.

Great ep! I was hoping that Patrick would have kept Slamdance online! It could have had a super secret blooper reel, a spoiler about next week's ep., or possibly Roger's secret recipe for Tekzilla Hot Sauce!
