Video Jukebox Part 3: Build a MediaTomb

Monday, May 25th, 2009 – running time 15:57
Looking for an Open Source media server that works perfectly with the PS3 and a host of UPnP compatible set top boxes? Try MediaTomb!

Bank in January, in Video Jukebox Part 2, we showed you how to build a movie server with TVersity and iTunes.

This week, we build a MediaTomb, a free, open source media server that works great with the PS3, and just about any other media rendering box that is UPnP MediaServer compatible!

It currently won't work with the Xbox 360... for that we still recommend TVersity!

The hardware requirements are minimal, many folks run it on a NAS box such as Western Digital's MyBook World Edition with no problems!

With material like this, it isn't going to be hard to fire up ye olde Photoshop.

I thought the bloopers this week were wildly hilarious. Patrick Norton, what have you been smokin?:D

As for the show, It was nice to break from the beer robot theme. Good job guys, I liked the show. (And make sure to keep Norton on the crazy pills). :p

I run mediatomb on and old p2-500 running ubuntu server. It's alright. There are a couple of simple security tweaks you need to do or anyone can get into your system. Actually I put my media in a specially set up var directory instead of the home directory. A windows box will access media tomb via the web browser, but you will not get the fancy interface, You probably could use a live xbmc or geexbox cd to make any media capable pc work with upnp devices without installation.

Optional

This section defines various user interface settings.
WARNING!

The server has an integrated filesystem browser, that means that anyone who has access to the UI can browse your filesystem (with user permissions under which the server is running) and also download your data! If you want maximum security - disable the UI completely! Account authentication offers simple protection that might hold back your kids, but it is not secure enough for use in an untrusted environment!

Note:

since the server is meant to be used in a home LAN environment the UI is enabled by default and accounts are deactivated, thus allowing anyone on your network to connect to the user interface.

Optional

Default: yes

Enables (?yes?) or disables (?no?) the web user interface.

For Roger and Patrick

on episode 105 of Systm you mentioned at the end something that gets interesting where a pci express audio card takes the output of the graphics card and encodes the digital audio into the hdmi output stream can you tell me for example what the gpu was and what audio card was working with it. i want to look into building a solution like that. thanks in advance

You can also use uShare to stream video to an Xbox 360. It is available in the main ubuntu repository (sudo apt-get install ushare).

To get it working you have to modify /etc/ushare.conf
Change
ENABLE_XBOX=

to
USHARE_ENABLE_XBOX=yes

Yes you have to add USHARE_ to the front.

Fill out the rest of the config, then restart the server
sudo /etc/init.d/ushare restart

Then visit the web server for uShare - http://ip : port/web/ushare.html

Add the folder you want to share

Push refresh

Done

Some things to note, you have to refresh this page whenever you add new content to the shared folder.
It doesn't transcode video, so can only play what the Xbox 360 can natively (WMV, XviD etc)
It's not pretty, but it does the job.

Oh Roger, you should know that when being attacked by a bear (hug) you should just go limp, and wait for it to pass. :D

I've got 2 questions,

How do you play this media in xp? I know vista and 7 UPNP servers just "pop" up in WMP, but microsoft says XP can only become a UPNP server but not a client. So how can you access the media via xp?

I love the idea of having a network media center I can access all over the house, But what if I don't have a set top box, or game console? Is there a media center like interface that can access the UPNP servers?

thanks for the help guys!
