Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime First Impressions

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 – running time 17:23

Four cores. And it feels so good. The first product to ship with Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core mobile chipset is upon us, and if first impressions tell the truth, it's a dandy.

Asus' Eee Pad Transformer Prime picks up where the original Transformer left off, with a refined and slimmed down body and twice the cores inside. Just 0.32 inch (8.3 mm) and tipping the scales at a scant 1.29 pounds (586 grams), Transformer Prime is both thinner and lighter than Apple's iPad 2 and packs a bigger punch than its Android rival, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1. Those extra cores make a difference, too. Prime is the fastest, smoothest Honeycomb tablet I've ever seen or laid hands on. Even while we wait for the promised Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) upgrade, Android 3.2 flies along on Transformer Prime with speed that reminds me of iOS on an iPad 2. Prime's 10" Super IPS display seems custom-made for watching HD video (though it's still a fingerprint magnet), and the device as a whole just feels better than the first Transformer.
