Best Free Screen Recording Software

David wants to make some how-to videos on Mac and PC computers. Our absolute favorite recording software is Screenflow, but the $99 might be a bit steep for some individuals (watch the demo with Mark Watson here). We also have some free and cross-platform solutions that might be exactly what you're looking for. Screencast-O-Matic is Java based and gives you tons of recording and output options. Screenr is sleek and sexy but doesn't have quite the same control. VLC can be used to record the Windows desktop and good old FFMPEG can capture and transcode on Linux.
