CES 2008: 150 inch HDTV, XstreamHD, silent case fans, Bluetooth headsets

Friday, January 11th, 2008 – running time 29:24
It's the biggest Consumer Electronics Event on planet Earth. CES. From oversized HDTVs to tiny Bluetooth headsets we look at all the gear that'll make it into stores. Plus some insight on the up and coming tech that'll make your electronics greener.

CES is one of the biggest trade shows in the world, CES is the event to attend if you want to get a bead on what's coming out in the wonderful world of electronics.

Why? It's the show where manufacturers show off their goods to the world!

Patrick Norton and Jim Louderback spent three days at the show (along with our new producer, Roger Chang) and we've got a ton of products for you, from XstreamHD's satellite HD video distribution to some nifty new case fans from Enermax and a whole lot in between.

We also cornered some of our favourite product mavens:

What's new on the HDTV front? PCMag's HDTV reviewer (and our buddy) Robert Heron talks about improved quality, thinner monitors , that 150 inch HDTV, and Pioneers amazing new take on black.

Cell phones: PCMag's Sascha Segan reviews 100 cell phones a year. He's got three picks on new phones from the CES show floor (it's all about better interfaces, something that the iPhone has inspired) along with his fave new Bluetooth headsets.

Robots? Lance Ulanoff lives for new robots at CES. (He's also the Editor in Chief at PCMag!) He's impressed with WoWWee's latest.

BTW, there's tons of CES product coverage at PCMag, and we'll be adding more in the coming weeks from the hours of video we shot at CES!

" Off for now yeah. What injury suits ES this year breakthrough power technologies and I've got a couple of them here want to show you first off. Real fuel cells that can be used by real human beings without actually having to worry about hydrogen. This is from horizon power and this device right here works with the water and a special powder to actually generate about twelve hours worth of power. Through this that about 45 watts continuous for twelve hours on one sort of -- now how -- says. You get one of these canisters single use canister quiet for toy box. Fill it with water it's. Close it up. Drop video over this opens up you drop it right in there and then you have thirty days to use up the power and that's about 270 watts of power. Great for emergencies. -- and have a problem like where the lights go out like they did cross last week. You just by a bunch of these put them up on the shelf we have an emergency use it you can recharge your notebook computer you can run -- fluorescent lightbulb you can actually use it. For USB or whatever you want now. About Ritter took me five dollars for this device twenty bucks for each of these it is pricey. But they're coming up with a a less expensive less power version. -- you can use to recharge. Simply USB devices are right there just returned USB this is what it looks like this is what it'll look like when it ends up coming out. And the this company also showing off a an interesting. Fuel cell development that's the future and it's right here this basically is using ethanol. To power this little propeller. Essentially what they've done is they've put a shot of vodka and some water in here and they can on this propeller for a week. -- a shot of vodka now I'm not sure why you want to do that. But that's definitely the only in Vegas sort of fuel cell thing that we could find all horizon power really changing the concept of fuel cells. Make it really easy for you used it just really simple book just out water and yeah. The -- of that we ran across them."

" Interesting battery replacement. This is that new silver zinc battery from C power. And it's the same size as a traditional lithium ion battery. But -- a couple of advantages according to the company first of all is that generates about 40% more power for the about a size so my notebook battery. This is 40% more than your standard lithium ion. The company claims that it won't explode like lithium ion does every now and then and that it -- just about as long as well. -- power has a deal with a major notebook manufacturer in July. That notebook company will be offering either traditional lithium ion corporate slight price premium. This is thinking they the silver zinc and you'll get to up 40% more power so waiting to see you."

" They come out west and also going to be able to do and cellphones and other things -- claim complete recycle ability 99%. We'll see on that one. And then moving on to this this is the Voltaic guy's been making bags with solar panels inside for awhile. This is their brand new product it is a 599 dollar laptop case they've been doing output that are doing backpacks and the first time we actually have a case. -- inside it's got a little battery take it outside you can charge it up takes about eight hours. Of sunlight to charge up your computer -- a couple different ways to get some alternative power from more power for your notebooks to solar to. Fuel cells which are absolutely the future of rechargeable."

" I am glad you are very cheap PC magazine and while we which very famous for the robust Fabian robot is coming out with the new generation of products. This one is quite exciting this is the -- it's coming out this later this year it's one of the first. Tellem presents robots could be a real commercial product and all that means is that the robots at home."

" You're in Paris tell the robot via a website."

" Go to the kitchen and check the stove isn't on go to the laundry and it's getting leave the iron on. And it will -- by the way it knows what roommates in this thing is self navigating that's pretty exciting so makes it a practical robot not -- robots a practical. While we also as the -- but he's down here and he is a heck of a lot of fun this guy."

" He entered."

" Tells jokes falls down. Knows knows daddy's fallen down -- does -- fun out plays games this remote by the way is unusual because it's I was topic I hold the button and I -- that -- X eighty dollars. So that. That's news that -- about -- and very intuitive for robotics. So the obvious going to be available later this year but 299. Dollars and they tried but should be available this summer. For 99 dollars I'm lance you look at -- chief of PC magazine here at CS 2008."

" I am ready to go life casting with his new helmet. It's 350. Bucks or so just starting to ship I got the camera up here I can do my extreme. Sports is I go around. Then does got a helmets though that if I hit the ground I don't break my noggin that's going to cool you can upload the videos up to their site and life casting was never so easy nor. So say if."

" Joining us now once Tekzilla perhaps the finest reviewer of HDTVs. In of the world. The man the myth the legend PC magazines very -- and my former co host on DO TV mister Robert heron do. Thank you -- I ask you to anything exciting Ike is there any real you know -- perceived to be a lot of 1565 inch. Last is out there yeah price in general coming down but from you really it's the design -- them across the -- Not only or panels flat panels in general become thinner which is good for a lot of things but the Basil designs that -- the panel itself. -- shrinking those Dowd ever ever thinner and make some good. On top but the picture improvement qualities that are happening it's just that this -- designs are are focusing on some of the my favorite parts of that also. Multimedia support -- Schwartz he's now with network expert doing home networking streaming multimedia content. In addition to summary featuring some of the early generations of Wi-Fi. Technology as well but it's really the networking features and and and of course they're adding more more HD port for easy connectivity of multiple -- This seems like patent just to HI port for it one. Is is no longer trinity there where people need -- and the very first OLEE. Indeed. Sony introduced the XL one in Japan a couple of months ago and now it's now available United States for about 2500 dollars for an eleven inch widescreen display but I mean expensive yes but. They're showing prototypes 2731. Inch displays from Sony and Samsung here to show. We're talking. Did two or three millimeters for the panel itself usually refrain that few millimeters thicker than that to protect it'll. But razor thin surface emitting light technologies so. It perfect viewing -- saturation of callers Austin because that's when it's off or showing black it is no light coming from the -- as well so it's super Contra street that Clinton like -- 1001 or some obscene number which become meaning we're talking about -- pretty sore of course we have a new world record largest flat panel display. 150 changes 150 and class. Two -- by four K resolution. Which is a lot eight mega pixels. And muscular 150 inches Panasonic new. It's not even a prototype claiming that the shipping by the end of the year. And they're taking orders currently further 150 inch plasma technology that was one of the hundred -- it was last year apparently they sold a few of us that is pretty impressed pretty much anybody who needed a flat large format flat panel displays that size but couldn't do a projection system for whatever it. George lightning -- our neighbors that's what drove this bill that in bragging rights for sports stars. Of the Hollywood the other percent of what you why. So -- I mean there's the short throw projectors and -- things I've seen a couple I saw one from Hitachi they had a new when they used to parable mere. And they had it literally I would say it about a foot away from the screen. The beauty of those in the since face the monitor on the ceiling it was projecting onto -- wall so the -- if they were using and that type of environment. Wouldn't be casting a shadow on the screen because the light path is is going in totally and I think for that environment and for -- home use as well. For if you if you just don't have the space to do long broke projection. This is a good option but currently NT mostly directed toward presentation or business style applications. But it's here it's working -- it's impressive in the fact that they're able to and that like the way they are upgrading distortion image. I senior editor -- Ago okay more exciting things anymore each piece of its revenue -- excited. Actually the improvements in the LE DTV or LC DTV's that everyone loves so much they're to a more -- back lighting systems yet every -- I've seen is nobody stock prices because still expensive and I don't expect them to come down -- anytime soon at least this year significantly but it is improving things like color output. The targeting larger and the prices are coming down for some animals are now what's the website. We can had a PC mag dot com and click on -- one for more coverage so much for your time and now it's. Back to the show floor for more products."

" That is the TV that everybody is talking about it CES. Not because they can afford it its two point 500 dollars. But because of what it means for the future. This is an over led television -- he did the first about seeing a screen this big and one of the cool things about it look at like turn it. Look how thin. The screen is. The technology allows you create these screens that are really know that are no thicker that I couple cards stacked together. Does the fall HD it's got HDMI in the background you can plug stuff -- watchable speaker here. But it Tony 500 dollars and -- Bill Gates are probably not gonna buy one. However. Sony thinks they can get this technology to the point where can produce TVs like this there's affordable as any other TV. I'm skeptical wall way to save but still this cool little thin TV is absolutely one of the neatest things here at -- yes 2000 name."

" Digital photo frames they're not only getting bigger they're adding up the capabilities to take a look at this on this is from -- it's -- connected photo frame. Which review gonna get up to the Internet and download photos are hooking up to windows media server -- home server which is interesting. Nineteen inches across right here big and heavy 400 dollars which -- the middle of this year. Big is also what you think what you look at this Westinghouse it's a little bit smaller than the -- about. But it's a sixteen by nine screen fifteen point six inches I think all of this also due out in the spring for about 330 dollars the pictures on here look beautiful. Viewing angles not that good it's got actually a really nice viewing angle this is pretty high Def. Pretty high high quality and then moving on campus is from a -- much smaller. But the thing that sets this apart this 130 dollar system which is available this spring as well that's got an iPod dock. So you can stick your iPod and play your movies play your photos and it's we've got all sorts of photo streams here for all different types. I don't know about you but I'll take the biggest ones like get a trial like this one and this one."

" data robotics was sponsoring Tekzilla CES. Here about a Provo is the easiest way to thank you do it and it stands forever Award winning. -- And you can save fifty dollars and divide durable managing the discount code text they'll."

" Yeah got somebody for right now was gonna tell you pretty much everything you need to know about cellphone announcements here's C yes why should you care -- the guy I go to his -- his personal email address and to the management personally reviewed more cellphones that anybody I don't in the entire. Industry classy in PC mag what are what are your favorite things that church. What's fun."

" A couple of the cellphone manufacturers pretty much sat out if you would be US releases because there's some cell phone only patrons coming up next couple months. There's mobile world congress in February receipts CIA at the beginning of April so you're gonna see a lot more activity in terms -- instant releases then. But still they they trickled out some interesting stuff. Motorola's ROKR. Yet keypad. Looks like a normal phone -- and take it into music mode which went all the numbers disappear. And -- music controls like that if you -- and camera -- all the music controls disappear all he sees camera controls. This mean cell phones are starting to suck less music players will people really focusing on the iPhone is really focused people on the user interface problem. And the ROKR. A with the telephone and we have 95 other features every Democrat and you can't get. Click click click all right I'm almost to the music interface click the media player and the like three more layers -- exactly. The ROKR. 760000. Needs now. Motion control in excel around that are in there so when it's playing music. Yeah if you're thinking you can turn up the volume if you take it this way you can. The next track and and you can. And play games like tilting on a driving game you. You can steer by tilting that's well that's and technology yeah and the shaking interface that actually works really well come on yeah a lot of unemployment. Now there were some smaller manufacturers here never kicking around some interesting ideas others. A company called neo nude and -- this tiny little -- and -- opponents entirely controlled by finger gesture. Easily. Yeah it's. It's like it's like the iPhone interface taken to another level you're years your swiping and sweeping and make the lines on the screen and that's what controls the phone. Well yes that's interesting trick and then I river. The MP3 player manufacturer. Has that beer first ever cell phones. Here at the yes. It's the Smartphone. And wow is an iPhone at all. So that'll be interesting they say to going to come out with a lot of iPod like capabilities and undercut the iPhone price. So that'll be interesting. Now from the accessories perspective is to -- and that's really as we have right now. One of them is being busy you know what if the Q seven or something like that uses phone can -- him. The sensor -- so it blocks out all external noise that's just grabbing the voice from inside your and it."

" It's something military that is basically so its its own production exactly no microphone whatsoever."

" There -- a microphone but when he wrote voiced its its much preferring the unconnected sent -- doesn't sound like your voices that sound tentative."

" Off because it's coming through bone conduction rather -- it sounds like your voice completely --"

" And it sounds like your voice and a Bluetooth headset without the truck passing by that's a big plus exactly. Like that and then the other had sent it to ambulance -- simple equal sign we keys sold Howard if you had to. -- arguments when you get it you never have to reach target audience and it can even charge. We indoor lights. So yes so as long as you're wearing basically it's chart."

" Do you base of the been indoors -- the last four days you have run out of power absolutely not that's pretty impressive actually yeah that's really need. Like that one last question blu and it's been talking about eight view would you adds that it's gonna be voice activated -- no buttons no is it working is about their -- caseloads and a one button."

" But yeah I tried it out and it's it's pretty nice voice activation works what's interesting is that it has to deal with."

" Negotiating with activation on your phone as well."

" So it starts with. By default your Internet headset voice commands like re dial or pick up the phone or dial favorite number five and and you can tell it. You've handed over to the phone if you want to dial by name it's pretty smooth and I."

" Any other accessories leaving out any particularly lovely furry. Cartoon character cellphone numbers there."

" Bill no other accessories is something just popped in my and they didn't want to talk about. We -- is that LG and Samsung inaugurated it pointless format war at you know."

" Yeah well I was always -- and Blu-ray dvd exactly. Beta and VHS on this case it's on the pop MP3 -- EU SB. Or and amp digital television broadcast mobile devices."

" And MPH AD SP -- the exact same thing we can broadcasting your local TV channels."

" Mobile devices not the national media stuff this is like local channel three local house next."

" To mobile devices they do almost exact same thing they seem to relatively similar specs except they're completely compatible."

" When hell is that wonderful yes and it just -- we need another way to make it more confusing by cellphones do the coolest stuff what exactly. Quick question for you for we go the website to find all of your views and your information see this is WW WPC mag dot com you can also check our blog at your -- dot com for a little tidbits that don't make me -- awesome stuff so -- that so much for talking."

" You have an iPod got a lot of our video on it here's something -- I think you really don't like creative just launched it. And it's this right here at the next doctor HD. Now what -- it lets you take one of those new modern iPods with all the video on it from Revision 3. And it up converts it up to 720 heat right here it's got component out it HDMI out. And so what happens is it up converts it and this is actually at 320 by 240 video itself can -- to 7:20 PM. You know I think it was pretty darn good it's still a little bit -- move it over there -- eyeballs a little bit of blocking this in the sky but yeah. It's doing a really good job of taking the video on your iPod. Putting it up on a big flat screens so that if you're watching tech Zeller Diggnation or any of the show who were running. Put on your iPod downloaded there that are on and on MTV. The only problem well there's two of them first of -- it gonna cost you 400 dollars and that's not gonna be available until the spring but without aside this the pretty cool product it is the X dock each day. Creative."

" We like to thank DNS stuff for sponsoring Tekzilla CS. -- just three little letters representing such a critical component of your business. -- stuff dot com is a once the application community every single tool technique currently available to help make managing Fiennes is easy as possible. Their flagship -- reporters the most comprehensive and powerful way to check the health of your DNS 56 test right after remaining seconds. Type in text really into the coupon they'll be -- who spent ten bucks off yeah."

" emails innocent hey extreme HD sounds amazing isn't worth getting heavy CD yet it sounds like a cool way get HD content. 1080. Delivery HD content 1080. Or separate feature that once again and this is the big F you have Gigabit ethernet inside your house that for getting ready for that to get the most quality. That's an interesting stuff here and take two. Mpeg four the ability to code black and delivering high quality content what is media -- well you don't want it could be amazing way to get 1080. They even deals with the studios if they can't this could be a huge. Huge and stepped around the whole HD dvd Blu-ray battle."

" Artwork rest were being rewarding those -- floor. But the truth this is we really can -- plus R&R tech problems for the house. Has really cute boy -- I come to you every couple months what they've been my home theater crisis over the month. Anybody -- that they are any this -- that and what happens that I -- not coming in again convert and they've solved my problems usually the problem that's too expensive but it happens. Again I have like three big crisis these by the some."

" And it really important potential first of all. I need a low cost David. These things do not exist until today Kevin's got them and they're only. But Geffen does much good given here -- babies at 60 box so I am going to get these and bring the moment the salt. Problem number one problem number two that I need to solve his right here. But fortunately the bottom dollar device I've probably won't take this one home."

" It's the extraction process multi channel analog audio meets you mind here's what it doesn't -- it HDMI goes in audio and video digital and it converts the audio out and split that out you can do things with -- another problem that I have like running it on your existing five point one -- in -- that doesn't have anything -- so. Cool but again 600 bucks is quite too much duplicate it. Another couple part of that but anyway code they're doing with the -- the ins and -- the final problem I have -- the -- HDMI around the house and unfortunately that -- like twelve -- otherwise breaks apart. I read about it like there Bianca but I -- an optical in my house we do -- do. And look at this as an optical network and other have -- terminated get to figure out how to. They -- this wolf plate turnaround optical out and I can use optical said that if you buy signal from my basement. Well my components are of my kitchen -- about watching most of my video like that so there's a bunch of other cool stuff here including an HDTV are right here that. Thousand dollars but I'll get -- you buy it and let's you record which is comical. Client Giuliani gigabyte internal hard drive -- what else what else -- don't actually like what they've been my favorite productivity TV signal generators that would -- excellent you like your Roberts here on these serious. If your television. They may look good doing or before formal or -- more technology -- lightning and actually they have. All of the patterns ever want to throw that include audio -- ignorant."

" Itself. Like games. You know after all this time -- fiasco -- the failure walks sending it that's that's in the strange sort of corporal. I think that's probably closer I've got -- Norton. I'm Jim lot of back and I'm not leaving again rue to toss them thousand dollars oh my god. -- didn't edit -- movie to a zero emails text only read icons takes all the I honestly. Is the website. Or to back him. We thank you so much for watching we're gonna look as. I don't -- this wilderness."

Real fuel cells that can be used by real human beings without actually having to worry about hydrogen. " That is the TV that everybody is talking about it CES. Not because they can afford it its two point 500 dollars. But because of what it means for the future.

That's an interesting stuff here and take two. Mpeg four the ability to code black and delivering high quality content what is media -- well you don't want it could be amazing way to get 1080. Anybody -- that they are any this -- that and what happens that I -- not coming in again convert and they've solved my problems usually the problem that's too expensive but it happens.

Tekzilla CES coverage

I watched CES coverage from DL.TV and Geek Brief TV and I have to say that Tekzilla beat them both. Excellent work guys! Jim, you really need to do a product review show on Rev3!

When Pat,Jim,Roger were at DL.tv they did the best IMO CES shows now that all 3 are at Rev3 I expected the same detailed coverage and they did a great job to me I hope next weeks ep is more CES, to me this was a great episode.:)

i think it was very very feature packed, tons of details and lots of stuff to see, so very good content..

but for some reason, i thought production value wasn't that good, don't know if its the music (lack of), camera, or what, but i just didn't get the lively view i usually see with tekzilla.

I hate to say this, but I think i enjoyed last year's CES coverage with InDigital a little bit more.

Again though, I thought it had a TON of content which was very very nice to see! I just wish it had the same high quality production indigital had last year for CES, or even the other tekzilla shows!

just my opinion

brucebeh, it probably had to do with time. They had the deadline to hit.

I hope we get more CES stuff next week.

Good Show

Thanks Rivive.

Good stuff! Jim Louderback and Sumi Das were my gadget gurus back in the day. I always felt Jim gave an honest assessment of gadgets because he actually told you what sucked about them too and didn't mince words.

I agree with he above, Jim having a more permanent gadget segment would be cool. InDigital bored me the few episodes I downloaded so I never watched it.

My favourite Tekzilla so far, good job Rev3, it was so much better for not featuring Jessica who really only acts as the uninformed user/ sounding board on the show.

I've always liked Jim's product reviews so I wasn't surprised when I saw this CES Show, knowing he would be in front of the camera. As many have already said he's always fair about his review but what I like most is his passion for what he does because it always comes out in his appearances. I’m sure Jim is proving to be a great CEO for Revision3, but his track record for on-air gadget reviews has been proven time and time again.

Great show this week; I’m looking forward to the unleashing of the Norton and anticipating for the next evolution at Revision3.

That... Was... Awesome!!

This probably was my favorite episode of TekZilla yet! It was very informative, got straight to the point and told you what was good, and what was bad.

Like everyone else, please have more CES content at the beginning of next week if possible! Thanks!

I like TekZilla, but I feel it is mostly held back to by the technical illiterate... Need to figure out a crowd: Newbies and novices or experienced to advanced. Like I said, it seems to be aimed almost too much to the novice crowd. Does Corbin really use a computer? Kind of like the one dude above said, she is pretty much just a sound board and someone to stop Pat from talking to himself which sadly made me feel good that Jim was replacing her this time. Sorry!

Thanks again,

1. LOVE Patrick Norton (for like years)
2. Jim Louderback did a great job

I have been watching _breaking_ CES coverage
from several sources.

I found out
that this CES coverage was not so much about content
..rather, who could get news out faster.

So you have to sift, you see.

I was BLOWN OUT about the *quality* CES coverage
Revision3 put out in record time.

Most of us out here WANT to see the show-stoppers
and you def came through.

Been loving tekzilla long-time
(well.. it is kinda new)

Paid Rev3 fan .. but I still have issues.
WHY is your show not offered in HD
.. like diggnation?

Why is diggnation the only
paid early content show
when Rev3 offers MANY great shows
.. that they could charge for early content.

These are the questions that swim in my head
when I see QUICK *quality* coverage
.. of a show that is hard to define
