Windows Pagefile: Performance Tweak, or Hands Off? Powerful Free Video Converter. PuppyLinux: Patrick's New Favorite Distro, Where's Your Favorite Anti-Spyware Pick? Ubulu: Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Made Easy, Stop Physical Attacks On Your PC!
Welcome to Tekzilla... hands on reviews of the latest tech, and how to make the most out of the gear you already own! Veronica Belmont and Patrick Norton are your hosts.
Lots of people emailed Patrick to tell him his antivirus/spyware/malware picks sucked, and that THEY had a better application. Hey, Avast and Prevx are great, too. Just remember to make sure you download -any- antivirus/malware/spyware tool from the manufacturers page, or a trusted source like Download.com! Find out why in the video...
Adam wants everybody to know a new version of Linux "RUNS FROM RAM!" and makes it easy to copy files from even a password protected Windows drive. It's true, Adam, but it's hardly new. We talk you through how to secure your PC from USB thumdrive and CD-ROM attacks in the video. (BTW, PuppyLinux might be Patrick's favorite new distro!)
Want a powerful free video converter? MPEG Streamclip doesn't care if you run OS X or Windows. It just converts and demuxes most any QuickTIme, DV, AVI or MPEG 1, 2, and 4 formats and output them into a QuickTime, DV, AVI or MPEG-4 so you can get it into your favorite editing software and get back to getting creative. (Hey, it's a basic video editor and does post processing features, too, but we love it mostly for being an incredibly useful tool for converting video from one format to another!)
Ben's looking to convert childhood videos from VHS tape to a digital format.. preferably without buying a new VCR. Hauppauge's HD PVR, our fave box for recording HD video will capture SD from a VCR, if you can borrow one. For alot less money, Roxio Easy VHS to DVD does SD video only, and gets high marks. You can hunt around for one of the zillions of local video services... as far as the big chain stores go, almost all of them will send your tape to YesVideo.
Everyone knows the Kevin Bacon game "Six Degrees of Separation" -- the one where you try to figure out how many degrees of seperation someone is from the Baconator. Thanks to the site Ubulu, you'll never have to guess again.
Robert's got a classic question about managing the Windows page file when you have lots of memory. What should he set it to? Should he disable it? How can he change it? Veronica's got the answers!
Kelly's wondering if it's safe to buy a new iPod touch... or should he wait. Will Apple upgrade the touch next month if he buys it today? Veronica's recco: check the MacRumors:Buyer's Guide before you buy -any- Apple product!
Luke's got a long list of tech toys he wants to buy, and sees "a lot of awesome deals coming out on refurbished items. Are these safe to get? Would I be taking a big risk to save a little cash?" Find out if Veronica and Patrick buy refurbished products in the video!
