I welcome doctor frank Summers thank you so much for being here today and much. So you would do the outreach you're the average astronomer -- This space telescope science institute which sounds very prestigious."

" Well it's a place here Baltimore Maryland and we control the science program of the Hubble space telescope so it is a bit procedures were very happy to be too in this job."

" This sounds like a lot of fun too so we took a bunch of questions from -- Listeners of bars on Twitter and on our website and all over the place and they gave us a bunch of really good questions on the first one is from Frank Zappa once 74 and -- suites what's average time between the Hubble taking -- picture and the public actually seeing it."

" It well this a good question because it varies an awful lot. Object fastest not turnaround time we've had between when Hubble takes -- observation when it appears for the public to see it has been about eight hours. And that was when Mars was and it's close it's it's been in like 65000. Years and what we did is we took the observations we got it. Process really quickly and we got out to the public the same day. And that was probably the fastest we've ever done a turn on an observation. The longest one well it's gonna be like a decade code has we're still processing the observations we take you back in the nineties. I guess and sort of average it be about a year or a year or two because. The astronomers take some time to process their observations before they come up with -- science result and then we produce the images from that."

" Now one nothing that you guys can kind of put to rest Michael Q asked why don't you guys just used the Hubble to take pictures of the moon landing landing to shut up those conspiracy theorists."

" The -- does conspiracy theorists are everywhere well. Unfortunately Hubble he had to look and see if our tax on the moon -- makes little bit more carefully there's 360 degrees in a circle. And you can divide into those degrees up in the sixty arc minutes and being good -- into those are two minutes up in the sixty arc seconds. Now hubble's resolution is 120. Of an arc second so one pixel and Hubbell's highest resolution images is 120 of march 2 you think that's really really small. Except. The mood is really really far away. The -- is over a quarter of a million miles away. And that that distance. 120 of -- arc second course monster about the size of a football field. So one pixel of the moon in Hubbell's highest resolution images only sees a football field. And there's nothing that we left on the moon that's larger than a football field. -- space rovers and then and the lenders are all much much smaller that so unfortunately. We can't get images of them. Not quite as easy as it would seem that. Well not -- this generation of telescopes Davis a few more generations but. I gotta say if you're conspiracy theorist and you believe we actually faked the moon landings. Don't you think they probably believe we could Photoshop a whole image stood -- to take it to."

" true is never get answers there dad can spears users who believe what they want to believe. Walker had freaky tweak how artistic modification is done from those great pictures that we see from the Hubble is that what the Hubble really -- you guys play with -- little --"

" Okay well first of all let me just remind people that Hubble is not a camera. Hubble is a scientific instrument. So the observation of Hubble are done to maximize the scientific output of those images. Barring that. We really do show you exactly what -- seats. We have a really large and stretch in our images that we can see a very high contrast ratio. That's the contrast ratio is about 65001. Unfortunately when we produce an image we're getting it down to a much smaller conference Richard shall we have to sort of optimize the images in the way of -- there. The collars of course what they can't truly respond respond to what your IC -- crises red green and blue. But we're taking very specific wavelengths in order to get science out of them. We have -- it filters that. -- through a very small. And -- the wavelengths so you know what we -- color red an image may only of course font to a berries and small tiny region of the red spectrum. Or the blue spectrum with a green spectrum. So while they are scientific data that is presented in a beautiful way. There's no real lying about the data so -- data set. You know there are -- all truly the Hubble observations. They just happen to be process to make it look as beautiful as possible. Given the constraints of science. I like I said getting the science out of them. Well we're really trying to get all the science we cannot of these images because and this is -- it's expensive telescope. It's one of the best telescopes and it's extremely highly competitive telescope. You know you have to be really really good to get observations on Hubble."

" We've had a lot of questions about the end of the Hubble space telescope and what's coming next and 501. -- how does hubble's successor coming along -- still planned for a 33 launch."

" Okay so then next at NASA's great observatory is there have been -- ray observatory so far beyond Compton gamma ray observatory which. -- again raise the Hubble space telescope will which looks invisible light. The Chandra X ray observatory which observes an X rays and -- Spitzer space telescope observes in infrared light. But the next one is going to be called the James web space telescope. And that is still on track and James -- combines the best of Hubble with the best of Spitzer. Because Hubble has the finest resolution in visible light and Spitzer observes an infrared. So if you take that really find resolution and you observe in the infrared. Well then you've got the James web space telescope and that is still on track for launch in 33. Of course that's a few years out and NASA you know things do slip every now on that hate it so what do you hope to see would -- web versus couple. Well what the web would do really well. Is it will have and as I said hubble's high resolution in the infrared and that's very important perceive things like planets around other stars. Because planets formed in these discs around these other stars in the disks are opaque invisible light. But they give off a lot of infrared light. So if you had hubble's resolution in the infrared yes it you be able to see a lot more details in these disks. And you would be able to see a lot more a planet forming around other stars."

" Excellent and now this is kind of sad question but -- crash wants to know. What will happen with the Hubble telescope when it's all finished -- is gonna disintegrated going to crash lands earth what's gonna happen."

" Okay so the fate of Hubble has not been decided just yet. But in the servicing mission that will happen in May of 2009. We're going to put on -- what we -- do you orbit module basically it's a plate on the bottom the Hubble space telescope. So a future mission can go up and take over the -- out of of the Hubble space telescope. And the plan currently is too -- orbit which means to bring it back to earth and it will and to guide it. And it's and it's reentry so it doesn't land in any populated places of Atlanta in the ocean. So -- yes it's been very good how we all would love to have Hubble space telescope come back down on a space shuttle and be exhibited at the Smithsonian. Unfortunately after the accidents with the space shuttle it is indeed it was deemed many years ago much true risky to try and put that much weight. Into the cargo bay of the space shuttle. So alas we come up with another solution in the next decade yourself. Hubble will unfortunately. When it when he goes out will be a beautiful fireball coming through the sky and -- the ocean that does seem somewhat fitting. It's kind of a majestic way to go at the end of all it's hard work it will definitely be a majestic -- coming through the atmosphere."

" So we have spiral galaxy MG EC's 5172. Star forming region NGC 6334. Interacting galaxies -- to seven before. Those are three of the six potential missions listed that you decide dot Hubble site got bored. And you have any personal favorites that you want to talk about her do you see any particular one winning for that next mission for the Hubble."

" Well the current one in the lead is the interacting galaxies are 274. But I gotta say my personal favorite is the star for your region and DC 6334. I can. No matter which one wins. The Hubble image of it will be fantastic and this is one thing we've learned over and over again is that we've we've we choose our targets well. And process the images well we end up some really great images and so no matter which of the six images wins. Well how fantastic image for you in April."

" Well it's a place here Baltimore Maryland and we control the science program of the Hubble space telescope so it is a bit procedures were very happy to be too in this job."

" This sounds like a lot of fun too so we took a bunch of questions from -- Listeners of bars on Twitter and on our website and all over the place and they gave us a bunch of really good questions on the first one is from Frank Zappa once 74 and -- suites what's average time between the Hubble taking -- picture and the public actually seeing it."

" It well this a good question because it varies an awful lot. Object fastest not turnaround time we've had between when Hubble takes -- observation when it appears for the public to see it has been about eight hours. And that was when Mars was and it's close it's it's been in like 65000. Years and what we did is we took the observations we got it. Process really quickly and we got out to the public the same day. And that was probably the fastest we've ever done a turn on an observation. The longest one well it's gonna be like a decade code has we're still processing the observations we take you back in the nineties. I guess and sort of average it be about a year or a year or two because. The astronomers take some time to process their observations before they come up with -- science result and then we produce the images from that."

" Now one nothing that you guys can kind of put to rest Michael Q asked why don't you guys just used the Hubble to take pictures of the moon landing landing to shut up those conspiracy theorists."

" The -- does conspiracy theorists are everywhere well. Unfortunately Hubble he had to look and see if our tax on the moon -- makes little bit more carefully there's 360 degrees in a circle. And you can divide into those degrees up in the sixty arc minutes and being good -- into those are two minutes up in the sixty arc seconds. Now hubble's resolution is 120. Of an arc second so one pixel and Hubbell's highest resolution images is 120 of march 2 you think that's really really small. Except. The mood is really really far away. The -- is over a quarter of a million miles away. And that that distance. 120 of -- arc second course monster about the size of a football field. So one pixel of the moon in Hubbell's highest resolution images only sees a football field. And there's nothing that we left on the moon that's larger than a football field. -- space rovers and then and the lenders are all much much smaller that so unfortunately. We can't get images of them. Not quite as easy as it would seem that. Well not -- this generation of telescopes Davis a few more generations but. I gotta say if you're conspiracy theorist and you believe we actually faked the moon landings. Don't you think they probably believe we could Photoshop a whole image stood -- to take it to."

" true is never get answers there dad can spears users who believe what they want to believe. Walker had freaky tweak how artistic modification is done from those great pictures that we see from the Hubble is that what the Hubble really -- you guys play with -- little --"

" Okay well first of all let me just remind people that Hubble is not a camera. Hubble is a scientific instrument. So the observation of Hubble are done to maximize the scientific output of those images. Barring that. We really do show you exactly what -- seats. We have a really large and stretch in our images that we can see a very high contrast ratio. That's the contrast ratio is about 65001. Unfortunately when we produce an image we're getting it down to a much smaller conference Richard shall we have to sort of optimize the images in the way of -- there. The collars of course what they can't truly respond respond to what your IC -- crises red green and blue. But we're taking very specific wavelengths in order to get science out of them. We have -- it filters that. -- through a very small. And -- the wavelengths so you know what we -- color red an image may only of course font to a berries and small tiny region of the red spectrum. Or the blue spectrum with a green spectrum. So while they are scientific data that is presented in a beautiful way. There's no real lying about the data so -- data set. You know there are -- all truly the Hubble observations. They just happen to be process to make it look as beautiful as possible. Given the constraints of science. I like I said getting the science out of them. Well we're really trying to get all the science we cannot of these images because and this is -- it's expensive telescope. It's one of the best telescopes and it's extremely highly competitive telescope. You know you have to be really really good to get observations on Hubble."

" We've had a lot of questions about the end of the Hubble space telescope and what's coming next and 501. -- how does hubble's successor coming along -- still planned for a 33 launch."

" Okay so then next at NASA's great observatory is there have been -- ray observatory so far beyond Compton gamma ray observatory which. -- again raise the Hubble space telescope will which looks invisible light. The Chandra X ray observatory which observes an X rays and -- Spitzer space telescope observes in infrared light. But the next one is going to be called the James web space telescope. And that is still on track and James -- combines the best of Hubble with the best of Spitzer. Because Hubble has the finest resolution in visible light and Spitzer observes an infrared. So if you take that really find resolution and you observe in the infrared. Well then you've got the James web space telescope and that is still on track for launch in 33. Of course that's a few years out and NASA you know things do slip every now on that hate it so what do you hope to see would -- web versus couple. Well what the web would do really well. Is it will have and as I said hubble's high resolution in the infrared and that's very important perceive things like planets around other stars. Because planets formed in these discs around these other stars in the disks are opaque invisible light. But they give off a lot of infrared light. So if you had hubble's resolution in the infrared yes it you be able to see a lot more details in these disks. And you would be able to see a lot more a planet forming around other stars."

" Excellent and now this is kind of sad question but -- crash wants to know. What will happen with the Hubble telescope when it's all finished -- is gonna disintegrated going to crash lands earth what's gonna happen."

" Okay so the fate of Hubble has not been decided just yet. But in the servicing mission that will happen in May of 2009. We're going to put on -- what we -- do you orbit module basically it's a plate on the bottom the Hubble space telescope. So a future mission can go up and take over the -- out of of the Hubble space telescope. And the plan currently is too -- orbit which means to bring it back to earth and it will and to guide it. And it's and it's reentry so it doesn't land in any populated places of Atlanta in the ocean. So -- yes it's been very good how we all would love to have Hubble space telescope come back down on a space shuttle and be exhibited at the Smithsonian. Unfortunately after the accidents with the space shuttle it is indeed it was deemed many years ago much true risky to try and put that much weight. Into the cargo bay of the space shuttle. So alas we come up with another solution in the next decade yourself. Hubble will unfortunately. When it when he goes out will be a beautiful fireball coming through the sky and -- the ocean that does seem somewhat fitting. It's kind of a majestic way to go at the end of all it's hard work it will definitely be a majestic -- coming through the atmosphere."

" So we have spiral galaxy MG EC's 5172. Star forming region NGC 6334. Interacting galaxies -- to seven before. Those are three of the six potential missions listed that you decide dot Hubble site got bored. And you have any personal favorites that you want to talk about her do you see any particular one winning for that next mission for the Hubble."

" Well the current one in the lead is the interacting galaxies are 274. But I gotta say my personal favorite is the star for your region and DC 6334. I can. No matter which one wins. The Hubble image of it will be fantastic and this is one thing we've learned over and over again is that we've we've we choose our targets well. And process the images well we end up some really great images and so no matter which of the six images wins. Well how fantastic image for you in April."
