" Pandora's unique method of song selection has insurance popularity among music fans but what is -- to what's behind me six election technology here to help -- and many questions as the chief technology officer for pandora Tom had. But this."

" Temperature to. We took a bunch of questions from a from actually is just to look at those who sec hello way to explain a little bit about pandora and how it works sure well pandora's personalized Internet radio service."

" On the web and on your mobile phone maker -- on your Blackberry. And it is you coming to tell us about music you love an artist media particulars on -- remake kind of personalized radio station plays the artisan. And others that are musically similar."

" I've heard a lot about the music genome project has that factor into that song selection sure that the music you know it's kind of foundation pandora."

" We actually have a team of 45 professional musicians -- come to the office every day. Listen to each and every song -- alternately played on pandora. On it and analyze those songs across 400 different musical logical dimensions."

" While so it's not just like an algorithm it's actually people putting their own personal opinions into the music should sound like when you compare exactly. That's really incredible odds to get us a -- pandora and they guys have a little bit troubled legality in the past is all that's written out now. Yes so."

" What of the neat things about pandora is that it's it's always been you know a service that's legal. Were okay. -- in early stages of laws that cover and how radio works who gets paid and so on. What happened at the nor was I guess it's time about two and a half years ago. This kind. Esoteric part of the government that -- royalty board came out with a royalty decision that. That really put all of pandora all of Internet radio and pandora and in jeopardy until we spent. The two and a half years since then negotiate with the record labels trying to get. A more equitable licensing structure put in place and happily about six weeks ago now. We've finally resolve that issue and so it sort of in her -- here for us and how does that work behind the artists get paid for music on Internet radio. So each and every song that we play. There's three organizations to get paid. Two of those organizations represented songwriters. I'm and one of them represents both that performing musician as well the record company that that recorded music and so. How we keep track of every song we play and then. We report those plays to -- these rights holders organizations sound exchange as kept in mind and they take care angry people."

" Excellent -- good to hear that everything's all sorted out because pandora to -- service it would have been. Really awful and -- with I think I can now. We're all pulling for you I'm not accusing questions for the audience a look at the first one. -- comes from consul gamer but scheme with the three to what extent are different from other services like last out of them and --"

" Well I think. -- the most significant thing is where radio station and we're really you laser focused on how we be the best possible radio station in the world on the Internet or or anywhere. And so that means instead kind of focusing on social features and -- things like concert going and and all of this dimensions of music which we think are really well served by some of these other web sites. We really focused on how we make the best radio playlist in the world."

" Excellent and our friend of the show fee wrote in since it looks like spot -- come into the US in how to spend or a plan to compete against it."

" It's funny that there's all kinds sort of on demand music services out there there's rhapsody can buy music from iTunes Napster has an on demand subscription service. And I think the spotlight being a little bit more like those companies and they are like pandora. If you know for example that you -- here you know the new -- record you can go to spot five or rhapsody or two. On demand service and just listen to it right there and then."

" More focused on kind of the music discovery dimensions -- you press a button. We play music for you that we hope that you'll love and you get summed up and thumbs down to kind of got the experience but it's I've stared at this."

" Visible -- boy you guys have some creative user names I want -- pandora make money and especially in today's economy."

" So almost all under revenue comes from advertising. A."

" Probably eaten 98% or more. We also make a little bit of money by selling music through partnerships with Amazon's MP3 store there physical CD business and and of course your iTunes. And then we haven't another part of our business that's a subscription offerings so -- here. A listener who wants additional features and get a 192 K bits per second -- mean we've had great desktop app you can subscribe to you. Our subscription product to -- one and -- we we drives record from active."

" Call Cipro Rodriguez asked we had just an artist option without your music being answered that there are times when I only want songs that particular artist."

" Yeah and it's a good example where a service like rhapsody. Is is a really great option of pandora as as a radio station. The play by certain rules that govern how often we can play a particular artists now. It that the basic idea behind this licenses is you know pandora and radio services in general. Helped introduce new artists and hopefully you go off to purchase the music or subscribe to subscription on demand service where you get that kind of that on demand fix."

" So how often for example would you be able to hear one particular artist within any certainly listening window."

" You know I think the specifics are something on the order you can hear a song by particular artist -- three times any four hour period right."

" And finally we have two very similar questions Phoenix X 24 -- Amy asks to cataclysmic by the service to people outside of the US."

" That's and it's really important us mean certainly our vision for pandora is is a global one. But there we've really been focused on making pandora a legal service and everywhere it's it's available and -- the licensing terms that we operate under in the United States are specific to the US visit to bring pandora. Even to. You know our Canadian neighbors and certainly anywhere else in the world we have to go -- and sort of negotiate label by label. Breaks -- by rights holder new deal's both for songwriters and four the record labels. And that's just taking a lot of time and it's something that we're focused on minutes it's gonna be awhile before we get there. And an audio from wants to know what's next what's next for you guys. What we're really excited about everything we've done in mobile ever this really successful iPhone application we launched on black area about eight weeks ago we followed that up with palm pre -- inquiry adoption on all of those mobile environment. Which leaves Android as that this sort of odd man out really really excited about our Android -- that's coming along. Fantastically well -- should be here actually --"

" It's been pretty soon but thank you so much for being here it's similar questions from our audience today it's been great thank you. To learn more about pandora does it pandora dot com and -- Twitter at T Conrad coming up next Jolie cloud reviewed is it truly the best operating system for netbooks but first time to thank our sponsors and here to tell us more is RPA --"

" Hi tech reviewers and and if you're looking for better way to build a post website more intrigued when you already have you tried Squarespace dot com. Was -- not limited by it could -- have design or -- the code and you have complete control over the look and feel of your site. You can import aside from another platform or build one from scratch it's easy. Frisky got the basic architecture you're saying organized navigation bars -- and what you are particular thing called war. You could add anything from you simply -- pages so links to not allow them to category indexes. When teens think that just remove the blocks around using a -- What you see is what you get absolutely no programming experience necessary could Squarespace for the -- of you just need it to template and customize your colors fonts and -- out. If I can do this in about ten minutes just imagine what you can come up with using Squarespace. Find out with a free child and you don't need a credit card with picket username and password entry email and start building them. And don't forget he's the code tech scene that's Tiki Casey if you decide to send different papers and Squarespace. Give it 10% off your entire -- test your order and you'll be helping to keep tabs on --"

" Another website we just -- announcement. A website we just can't say wait from the disease it's funny you just too darn irresistible. This -- Specify. Its parent of traditional search engines single fathers organized sensible results you get using Google thing I'll -- specify dot com. I kid I kid specified -- of really interesting new ways to -- themselves even if it can be a little overwhelming at first. You enter your picture of choice -- for example given that part of various types immediately that's return. Videos streets links us anything it's kind of neat idea of putting into the -- The main purpose at least from what I can today's that they want to -- flash of inspiration. With so much media -- is sure to get the creative juices flowing -- more to the point super entertaining. The randomness is of the results can be very amusing and simply so it turns up at the top he -- a really long time to put in terms of exploring the result is that it doesn't love you can hold your mouse button and scroll all around the page it's looking immersed in your search."

" Well let me help you find what you're looking for in the same way to -- search engine went I would definitely help you explore the web in new way. Ever since Kevin -- on the show a few months ago I've been looking forward to the new netbook optimize operating system called -- class average Alec depending and -- I don't around that for the past couple weeks and wanted to get to the east side this is a good alternative not only to other Linux sisters but also windows seven. And the macintoshes. So I."

" I gotta as they especially after that whole HP MIE yeah and optimizing who is is this basically did the design. And operating system around through the limitations of a network."

" Well for one thing I you can't really change resolutions so it's nice to have an operating system that has nice big icons you can click around very easily. The interface is super easy to use and it is optimize for web use. -- most of the apps are web based apps there are few natively installed like transmission but we'll talk more about this later. On but it's just really good from ago and it's also not our ex pastor Billy. I mean it's it's simply optimize to work within limitations of you know the processing power and -- you know the guts of a little booklet this."

" So I know like like XP home is a real dog on the net forums is it does it feel faster than windows senator the original open to install."

" I definitely noticed a huge speed increased from and mighty which may have just been my personal experience on my hated them mice that's beyond the valley that's HP's -- and Peru Linux and exactly. Com and I used to running a little bit faster in windows seven I can't say for sure haven't done any benchmarking yet. But nobody -- early experience has been better for me and running windows seven beta which I did enjoy which I did actually really like using. -- so this you know it's it's stuff planned. Thumbs up for me so -- let me talk about why it's specifically please it's very aesthetically pleasing and it's very like when that I'm gonna weigh that into these is that the design and it's super clean each time I'm running here on my HP mini 1000 -- Which as image was previously running windows seven beta I opted to not dual boot system only working with sixteen gigabytes of SSD here because says that. We really worked right. -- installation process is super easy you just need to create a bootable USB key it's a little more difficult for Mac users could see have to go through -- terminal process in order to make the US -- Keen on -- for windows users and Linux is just a few commands in your payments done if your Mac users find somebody's -- windows machine. Yeah like so that it only took me a couple of minutes so we -- whatever your terminal medically because typing Christina they have really really great instructions on the web sites you'll have to follow commands and you don't have to be some kind of three eniac genius and monitored figured out a -- yes now for the -- like pseudo make it work. I didn't really happen. -- what does I just follow the onscreen instructions -- the netbook to boot using the USB key. -- for you with all the details -- already done on this machine here under the whole time it took like thirty minutes of thing to do the complete install including the download in the creation of the US well the download to a little bit longer so maybe forty minutes if you're downloading it fresh ran off of your connection that day let's that's about. On the operating system itself is really -- Mozilla's -- run time environment. And it's also based off of the Ubuntu -- agreements which we've talked about a little bit in the past. And turns of pretty easy to use. Linux systems."

" Does it has I know in the passive that we've we've had some hardware support issues in the open to re mixer they sort of catch up on drivers without."

" On the only hardware issue that I really Colin happening without actually cloud was these sound issues -- they fix that most recent update cool so now getting sand -- perfectly fine on on the netbook can actually surprised he -- an idea I've installed the updates -- sit there and allison's big sound happily. It starts sound for the yeah. One that I thought okay well thanks for six and that. I have cooked up. They just go into the cloud thing here to -- the applications installer primarily as -- mentioned all web based apps I mean you've got a separate apps for Gmail. For Flickr for Google Reader Google docs. And I'm always and I -- it was."

" Critics that was from his own places where without me EV DO Motorola wouldn't have a network connection did you find yourself what op in the subway I can't do X because they don't have the Internet I."

" I haven't really come across that problem at mostly because having carrier on the island might I would interpret -- cheating. On they do have some native applications they've got open office and it got transmission assignments with you would need to be online to use transmission you know -- that would -- appear -- appeared -- exactly yet they have up tension on there for -- and -- other chat clients so this of this is not completely crippled if you're it's not -- files to and stuff I mean you can work within the actual netbook itself. But it's definitely much better experience and a much better experience online. -- downside that I noticed is that same -- handling. The Google Reader app that you can't use your regular browser shortcuts to get around. So if you're like. In -- may now lie if you're gonna go back and forth than a history of something you can't use like the -- command like left bracket left right bracket to like move back and forth in time. Which is really kind of confusing because you feel like you're in a browser aperture really in the of in the in Firefox which is also a separate web bastard like the Firefox run time emulating the browser window running -- traditional browser -- windows I'm sorry Firefox isn't aware that it's actually the natively installed apps but it you know it acts like regular Firefox but -- hearing in Google Reader. It doesn't act like its regular Firefox and you'll actually open up Firefox we wanna click on a feed items to read. Well so that's a little bit of a downside but it's -- pretty quickly and the funny thing is the OS itself is like a social network. I'm sincere -- the applications that your friends are installing and what they're working on it or not they're working on but what apps are playing -- It's pretty neat I have an added really any friends yet."

" Is that like what everybody does it just sort of it's checking in RSS feed for your friends -- is an actual vector of attack for hacker obviously extolling I don't think I think it's just to feed. It's so funny it likely that box and this -- fetus of recently done things by reference you know if it's it's I disliked by the whole web 2.0 social aspect like -- your operating system."

" You'll they can become a little bit -- bottom has installed yeah. The idea and what -- yeah yeah but but -- Amazon they've got a lot of great apps like and Boxee is a really good ones the -- app runs really really well on my HP mini 1000 that's nice. On they've got FaceBook we are hunted and they also have a separate FaceBook chat app. So I'm not sure why they had to make a separate one but it works twit or net -- you name it they've got it. And doubling I was saying the native apps include transmission -- open office and more. Firefox also. I'm -- to be online billing yes it does help."

" so basically. It's. Jolly -- built on Ubuntu using jolly cut optimize applications. Or running -- applications natively recently -- except."

" Yes yes. And I -- the thing that works like that they also have a dashboard area and that's like your central hub. Where everything goes on -- consulting system updates initially cloud updates. And you can also see your applications and Stalin and remove them. And that change your settings so there's a whole bunch of applications and I haven't even installed it and I have to go through we should make a Revision 3 line. How to -- it if you can watch other Revision 3 shows as a as a web app on here into the displace the website."

" To the makers of the BHD version of the show. But that probably cause MI -- my cousin look that if I pick up what I would be like every three seconds it did you."

" Right and ended up the -- here that's a little blue cloud it's like the symbol for jointly cloud and it's a place he can open up all your different apps and you can even add them to your favorite section. -- can easily find them in your browsing around. -- you can click back and forth between open applications as well appear in the this task bar menu bar kind of area it's really cool. See overall I'm really happy with my switch to -- cloud it's a little bit faster than windows seven beta it's a lot better and makes me much happier to use an MIT was. -- netbook manufacturers knew what. -- knew what was good for them. I would say just put this puppy on here when they sell -- instead of having. Not automatically and making an option but it looks amazing via -- screen -- open source it's optimize for the actual environment you're using them that -- yeah. It's free. Yeah it's free it's not widely available yet they're still in alpha -- your name on the list to get on. Notified when you when it's time he'd be of the doubt it very cool with -- side. To a -- dot com."

" Coming up next more viewer questions but first. Then that one of our sponsors godaddy.com. Don't make an impact online go to that -- what -- that got a picture of the dollar and acts as well as host city without filters and quite a bit more. Your website visitors prospects and customers are wary of web sites and online businesses that are what they claim to be. They're worried that personal and financial information might fall into the wrong hands. During your visitors they're always doing competitive advantage. Adequate protection but godaddy.com. Perfect view replies to decipher the skills and be sure to visit revision3.com slash -- for all the Tekzilla community deals and -- It was a -- here takes a look at your."

" We have email from -- got the concerns about Wi-Fi security. He wrote and I'm fairly comfortable with my home security firewall antivirus -- strong password all good stuff. But now for the first obvious -- a laptop with a road log in unsecured Wi-Fi at a hotel. What is the basic things he should do or keep in mind through basic primer for newbies on the road mark in Louisville Kentucky this looks like it up full. A virtual private network of -- CNN yes. Basically it's your very own private encrypted network inside the Internet. In your case it's a secure connection back to the mother ship it home and -- the office. It's really easy I'm gonna see just there's lots of alternatives out there just download it run a moxie. From LogMeIn and that it's free for consumers there's a commercial version and offers high dam with relays we'll explain that -- second it's five bucks a month. Forty bucks a year but for basic home use it is free. Download and so on your home machine to power it up to -- product -- network address that your much ID that you create a network for example to create the network. Tekzilla him -- password for that. And you're done wait you're not then you have to download on your client computer the one that's out in the Internet when you're gonna use in those nasty hotels were people of set -- machines. On the network to try to trap all of your credit card information. That they think it's particularly easy but from what I've heard Defcon it's particularly. Scary and particularly worth considering. Basically you're gonna create the much clients on your portable notebook. And that you're gonna be one more thing here to create a proxy server at home and your gonna use the proxy browser settings to send all of you or HTP traffic HT TPS traffic. From this machine. Through my -- virtual who moves to your home or your work network and that what you basically isolate all the packets of somebody is sniping at the hotel. You keep your information encrypted and away from them."

" like to securely browse the Internet with the Internet your Internet you can browse play Brad."

" Which literally is kind of exactly what you do and so basically you're -- secure piped to a known -- known -- network were obviously assuming your network at home work has been compromised. Little bit of performance -- is possible but it's basically you know. It's you look at this over local watch by it wasn't too bad some applications or worse ought to be is set -- sort of private networks for video gaming through sheer iTunes to share. Basically they want a copy. San Francisco collapses in the earthquake might DD BBC that mom's house -- gets hit by Saddam because that would be so probably end up putting everything somewhere Ohio or something you. But that's not -- yes so. In any case though he downer. Did down there what's interesting about those is damaged in the whole like high speed realized what it does is if it can't tunnel through your network. It creates -- normally does is it you you basically -- wanna take this network. And how much he goes okayed this is the information for this client does information for this fight and hands it off becomes peer to peer. If not runs over how much use for Q relays through the lower performance if you do the free version if you more high performance. Situation you basically -- five bucks month reported seeing here. It's pretty and -- here commercial use it for work paid forty bucks right off it's it's where the money it's really interesting tool. You're a thousand different ways that -- he had if you wanna do open source of -- your own check out open VP and to a -- ports."

As for jolicloud, no other distro makes you wait to download it.

So which picture was Patrick looking at?

I must be odd. During Veronica's bit at the end, I thought of not Pippi Longstocking, but the image of the girl on the sign for Wendy's Restaurant.

Esata hot swap answer

Hey guys, first time posting to the tekzilla board but I got a pretty good answer for the esata problem. Install windows 7... Yea I know not the optimal answer however Win7 treats esata drives as a removable storage device and you can remove the drive just like you would with a USB drive using the safely remove icon in your task bar. Also when plugging in a esata drive to a computer with win7 the OS doesn't stutter and freeze up temporarily like Vista does.

You don't burn it to CD. You follow the instructions and use it to create a bootable thumb drive.
The OS is designed for netbook use and, therefore, not designed for use with an optical drive.
