On today's Tekzilla, we talk reveal which sites we trust for PC part reviews, how to test audio gear and is Dropbox overpriced? Plus much more on this episode of Tekzilla!
How to test audio gear! Which websites do we read for PC parts reviews? Can Veronica go paperless? We review Doxie One. Plus, is Dropbox overpriced? Also, Freesound is a great site if you need audio to help out your podcast or presentation. Lastly, why do big crowds slow down cell phone data? All this on today's Tekzilla!
Veronica and Patrick both use Dropbox to store and share files, so they were surprised when @RossNeufield tweeted, "@tekzilla - @Dropbox plans are terrible, and expensive! Anyone tried sky drive? or gDrive? or Box? which is better?#thanks" We talk about max file sizes, monthly costs and compare Google Drive, Box, and Microsoft's SkyDrive, along with what makes these services different from something like CrashPlan+... and why Dropbox might be more competitive than you think!
I've been trying to figure out a few ways to get more organized lately, and my first big step was to buy a Doxie One scanner. It's a lot easier to use than a regular flatbed scanner, and it comes with some nice extras too, like the ability to run off batteries so you can scan receipts on the plane ride home... but just how good are the scans from this tiny portable scanner, and can it really make it easy to go paperless??? Watch the video to find out!
If you're a podcaster or audio editor looking for some new sound effects to use in your projects, look no further than Freesound.org, this week's "Website We Just Can't Get Enough of!" This site requires a registration in order to use it, but it's free and totally worth it. Just sign up, and then start browsing the site for all kinds of unique and interesting sound effects and ambient background noise. Watch the video to learn more!
Viewer question! @Wiley_bean tweeted, "When looking at parts for a computer who do you turn to for the best reviews?" Pay attention to our frequent guests, Wileybean... and watch the video to learn where we go for reviews of GPUs, PSUs, motherboards, CPUs and more!
Obviously @rbdwarf was paying attention to Patrick's roundup of audio gear from CES last week... he tweeted "Tekzilla ep393 - Staring At The Sun to torture low end. Google shows ~10 songs with this title and 1 band. Help!" We've got the deets and links in the video, along with advice on how to best use your ears when trying out headphones and other audio gear!
Derrik writes, "My wife and I both have iPhones (4S type) on AT&T, and I have noticed that data connectivity (Internet, Facebook, Twitter) can completely drop during concerts and other activities where large groups of people are present. Do the other major carriers (Verizon & Sprint) suffer the same problem? I'm willing to bite the ETF bullet if I can get relief from this problem." We explain why all carriers have problems with everybody tries to use the same cell phone tower, how COWS can help alleviate the problem and show an awesome website to figure out what carrier has the coverage in your area!
