DIY Projector Lamp Replacment, Why is HDMI Copper and not Fiber Optic? Broadband.gov and the National Broadband Plan, Long Distance WiFi: This Texas ranch is gonna dump the dialup! System boot time... why is this an SSD benchmark? Backing Up Blu-rays: Can you make them smaller?
Welcome to Tekzilla... hands on reviews of the latest tech, and how to make the most out of the gear you already own! Veronica Belmont is getting her SXSW on this week, so Robert Heron joins Patrick Norton to host today's show!
Thinking about buying an SSD drive to speed up your Mac or PC? Last week OCZ anounced the Onyx SATA II drive... a sub-$100 32GB SSD, this week Intel brings the PR to their $125, 40GB five channel X-25V. We talk whether these low cost SSD drives are worth the upgrade!
Nathan's having a horrible experience getting decent broadband without a miniscule data cap. He'll be curious about Broadband.gov is the FCC's new site dedicated to stepping up the quality of Internet access in the US... right down to it's new broadband test application. Mostly, tho it's there to promote the new National Broadband Plan. We'll know more about it next week... but we're very curious about the 100Mbit in 100 Million Homes goal!
Why did the HDMI Founders go with copper wiring for the HDTV cable instead of fiber optic, like the stuff used in S/PDIF audio connections? Robert Heron is all over this one!
Marc has some rancher friends in Texas... they can only get dialup access in their house, but they can get a cable modem in the house up by the road. Can they share internet from there, a half mile up to the main house? If the two buildings are 'line of sight' they certainly can, Marc, and it probably won't even be that expensive! Seattle Wireless and RadioLabs have tons of information, as does Long Hop Wireless, a Systm episode where Patrick built a fast 1 mile connection.
Nick's not sure why so many SSD owners are gushing over their new super fast boot times.. he hasn't restarted his Linux box in 163 days! Robert and Patrick talk solid state drive performance -other- than during startup, where it brings the most benefit.
The name, Topless Robot, might sound a little naughty, but this site is all about "Nerd news, humor and self-loathing" and caters to all the nerdly demographics. Check it out!
When you step up to a Digital SLR from a pocket sized point and shoot, things change... and a few well chosen accessories can make geting great pictures -and keeping that expensive camera in one piece- a lot easier. Our beloved producer, Roger Chang brings his list of Must Buy gadgets when you step up to a DSLR!
Andrew's backing up Blu-ray disks to his computer, and freaking out 'cause every ISO takes up close to 40 GB. Can he compress that down to 15 or 20 GB, save lots of HD space and still play the movies? Robert's got info for him in the video, and a strong suggestion to spend some quality time at VideoHelp.com
Ryan's looking to save money when he replaces the lamp that burned out in his 56" Toshiba DLP rear projection HDTV. Robert talks about how you can save a chunk of change on any bulb replacement, and the number one way people destroy their brand new bulbs! (Watch the video to find out what -not- to do with that $300 bulb!)
