Official summing up -- I gotta run to the border. I got it like crunch to talk so the best I can put this is not is sponsored. -- talk about this -- talk about -- talk about. " It is from mobile weak people not to change the subject batteries is not made any stratosphere leaps in capacity but notebooks -- a lot better battery life. Between little netbooks too close to six hours of a six cell battery even full sized notebooks are hitting six to seven hours with fifteen inch monitors on full sized notebooks windows seven generally gives a performance boost. On we have little atom powered netbooks however -- windows seven battery life stories when it changes the."
" Yes last week laptop magazine as a result of some serious battery life testing on netbooks comparing windows seven to windows XP. I'm full sized notebooks when a seven generally delivers more battery life. First is XP laptop's battery test is continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi found an average of 47 minutes less battery life on the issue of Toshiba. HP and Asus netbooks he tested. And note turning off aero doesn't save battery life. Apparently they have like 10000 responses good luck Louis could turn turn arrow right I thought -- true open day I guess if they tested it no. Thank you that the laptop magazine. But speaking of netbooks debate of Google's Chrome OS might be released this week which I'm pretty excited about I have half excited half like -- doing jolly cloud."
" Removes -- seven and windows XP home. I think it's actually be really interesting to see how the performance of battery life fares on Google's new browser centric OS. They're pretty much everything else out there. Most of interest to see if the windows sending me these are something they do -- involving atom or maybe the wave power I've been really curious to see what does -- you. It's 45 minutes is long time."
" I know because my hat on my originally had. I had that businesses when it from HP mini 1000 he which I've talked about many times in the show originally I had that MIT. And a Linux distress right they have specially built for for HP the -- okay and I did the windows seven. These early release candidate -- the data. And the battery life definitely went up this performance overall is a lot better. And I -- cloud on and the battery life has been. Good I haven't really seen a -- either way and battery life but I also haven't been using and that regularly. So I can't really make that kind of judgment because I just haven't needed to use my netbook and I bring my MacBook Pro around with me still everywhere."
" I've been using -- that because like every other computer has died recently have been using my notebook for everything else five and half hours is getting so and a half hours sleep around. And in shiny here it is ms. Belmont is found most stylish portable laptops dad ever."
" Yeah it's very interesting to become the fabulous Nokia booklet -- this -- C I think just announced a geek. -- PV eight week eight -- IIIIQ. And it's 7995. And it's available for pre orders now I'm -- dot com. And it's actually pretty cool and music a bunch of different ways and it's very -- bendable and movable and adjustable he felt like there us. Excellently. This is like you kidding me you can choose short it is within reach it comes with like a little container you can actually folded up into scary like that would you. Herbie goes in just a bit stick it in your laptop bag near the case with the whoever. Oh sort of figure that the shovels to clear with a that's really only for story yeah I noticed is that they -- you do it but they tell you -- like that like that's. And then you put the laptop. On top. Like that. But then I realize it's still it it has excellent aluminum lining their top here so it was getting hot to you what I looked it over like that and put the laptop this way. And from a MacBook -- just the perfect size has been nice air circulation underneath. And serafina was saying would be funny to 6 -- otter pops underneath and have a nice little. The system. And there consider -- connect I don't know what a waste is like multiple ones and a loving and lately we do it that way. Missing many different ways -- had a break this thing. That's right I mean it's kind of expensive for what it is -- and -- eight bucks for that guy I think. News what they've built a slightly out of man to him and that's totally unbreakable."
" Looks like -- marks it looks like it milled aluminum after they've bonded at the plastic she made me."
" Like maybe over time will be bending and stretching it and holding it would break it down a little bit but I'm sure they have some scientific method of of saying that will never aware anti where it'll never. You know break down and stop working. So that looks like. Stop working."
" So. -- Accident that we do not speak of but it's so you're wash your backpack I watch why would watch my backpack and they get filthy and along. I never watched a backpack before. You probably shouldn't -- washing machine that whole semen they're two different things about Washington to hit that. Never mind -- inside -- the I hope my goodness the via a good laugh or about that be fit -- still amazing now all the backpacks it they believe this one is actually meet overseas now there I just made US. And I was thinking like. I thought this was huge but those aren't the folks at -- and they're gonna do the aunt -- which is why don't. Basically next year or a smaller wrap -- this thing people want speaker backpacks security we're stuff. So it's you know it's -- classics of the spire volt gorges construction. -- you."
" I feel a little big for me."
" I -- Timbuktu on hacker bags and it's it's good it's like a good size with a -- look like. But the hunchback of notre bomb went off the."
" That does -- huge and -- an out at. But this is the straps laid out to fit me so it's."
" That's walker telling -- so."
" They base that was kind of cool that. The front of -- throws my 400 pound backpack that. Is that basically keep you -- appropriate size. Envelope for your laptop that snaps in place you can decide how to hold in place there. Or keep getting bigger notebook -- makes -- even bigger -- for that. There is a huge amount of storage inside of this of water bottle pockets actually did hold little water balloons sent shock destruction is really nice. The end. It's kinda crazy because there's two main compartments they've got zipper tabs inside of there again I think you should be good for me for what the apparently people are carrying a lot of stuff --"
" That's a good thing for commuting thanks for me like accent but for you don't have to get."
" It's actually a little big for me you know weekend bag like it had all my business of course there clues -- the wells are USA dot com's web sites."
" Can we see the news comes ankle and a backpack statement respect for good thank. I looked fired the first question this race and I bought a MacBook Pro about four months ago and since then bonnet. Had a centric care about three times. I'm worried about what if the computer has some problems after the when your warranty it's really worth the money to buy Apple caring get the three years of warranty excludes in Minneapolis."
" Which -- this this kind of a larger question not just apnea but statistically have secret almost any brand of notebook you're whale that your repairs and not really sucks how -- just it's just -- get it done."
" you know when you get something home that you spent a lot of money on and then things just aren't working the way there are some statements like."
" I don't believe that the classic consumer reports -- back 1987 said that in extended warranty usually cost as much as replacing the device by the time it died. Yeah I get pretty super cheap extended warranties of the big stores but the price is still generally. They don't need it because most consumer breakdowns of similar products happened very early on in the first year the first few hours. Usually if something doesn't break in the first 48 hours it's probably good to go happily forever electronics in the -- for really long time. Power supplies not so much for it -- Apple for one is actually go powers -- returns I think because MagSafe power supplies to the disintegrated over time."
" They haven't they haven't known bug in a -- problem issue with with something with in the hardware usually they're a little more lenient with it. But yeah my computer has worked perfectly well over the past few years except for now. The dvd drive doesn't work anymore and I had to replace the date the battery. Which isn't a big deal after two years sister going anyway right but yeah my -- never forget. The extended warranty because I'm I'm the kind of person buys a new laptop every two or three years anyhow. So having a three year warranty does it make sense for me."
" Yeah I mean a lot of it's of people like you know extended warranty isn't gonna help if you break your screen in most cases an extended warranty isn't gonna help you if you. -- your notebook with a state can break the hard drive basically extended warranty covers natural causes for example manufacturers defects were the ones are running into. In the hands yeah I've I would say no because if it doesn't wear out the first -- your hard drive might wear out for it. You're probably gonna spend less money on buying a hard drive it's like twice the size when you have now in the year two. That you are on the warranties so on this they stick with a one year warranty and if I'm terribly wrong oh yeah and Versailles."
" Hey I never get the extended I was just go to the one year so that's that's so his work for Maine but. You know if you if you want that that assurance though if you have the money to spend. It can't hurt Britain can't hurt against her that lets you need -- and nebulous answer we're sorry."
" Silicon notebook action people relate -- HP's fine upstanding offerings for this holiday season but what we've got your attention. With the one of our sponsors new board seeing bill offers hands free what's been your mobile phone media players that -- your car you can vote somewhere you're going. It was your -- was -- it -- involve yourself -- listen to music podcast was MP3 players is during my current -- real time traffic weather. -- said quick text message to -- your contact list all you keep your eyes on the learn more about sports do this in my -- podcast dot com. And enter to win what at fifteen reading and those are fifty breezes through this ever is that between with a half day six. I ride podcast that -- and -- my ride yes it will automatically be entered -- People do it by right -- dot com and please support Tekzilla by supporting our sponsors but sitting at that. I think my ride pod -- Well."
" This week's freebie download pick. A free program we find useful -- This week -- It's an oldie but it that he and the cleaners briefly been updated for windows that -- slightly fast windows registry cleaners even better than ever. Greater clears -- to -- files and can easily easily performed private information because your web browser sort through offline and see your browser does that. Okay you can also analyzes window's registry and when we option for infant system registry entry. So here we utility that makes cleaning -- windows machine as simple straightforward path -- should be the top of your list."
" We asked HP Lenovo and Dell for a notebook that hits the mainstream sweet spot something more high end and a netbook. Here's a sample of what each key has to operating HP direct dot com. If you're an AMD -- annual love HP's pavilion DM three. Starting at 530 bucks these stylishly clad all little machines measure under one instead way four point two pounds impacted gorgeous thirteen point three inch LED screen. HP claims up to ten hours of battery life from the standard six cell battery and you can choose between AMD and Intel CPUs and even discrete graphics for more horsepower. Now stepping up the style factor the 1700 dollar HP envy thirteen weighs three point 74 pounds. Folks in the office couldn't keep her hands up the aluminum magnesium case the LED display is bright and even. In an optional battery slice can parity and -- for up to eighteen hours. So -- it was very interesting is quick web. You can actually access web and multimedia features without logging into windows and you guess which will graphics is pretty slick because between fast discrete radeon graphics orbit onboard Intel graphics. To -- battery. Now if -- Morgan netbooks but need more power 3400 dollar HP mini 311 has an awesome update from earlier HP mini models. Nvidia ion graphics which makes for awesome Blu-ray performance. Matter fact awesome video performance period. Eland point six inch panels there with a 92% keyboard in my personal favorite update mouse buttons below the track -- instead of on the sides and an optional upgrade two gigabytes of ram. Nice sleek clean. And -- This is a pretty powerful portable but you'll pay a little extra for that. So speaking of mobility -- talk to Sasha Sagan about the current state of EV DO here's what he had to say. Last week's not to say -- BC. I enjoyed this talk about Motorola destroyed hands on scoop now he's back from mobile wait to talk about wireless access it. The Internet on your notebook -- welcome back to Tekzilla. It's good to be here again. The so I I'll also over the question we get occasionally what about WiMax tablet WiMax was -- gonna get WiMax only notebook it's 2010 right or it's almost 2010 worth the WiMax."
" Yeah what happened to WiMax clear wire is really slowly building WiMax across the country and they've just launched it in a bunch of new cities it's in Philadelphia it's in Chicago I think it's in Dallas. But it's just kind us lol -- march and across the country so. If you're lucky enough to be and declare our city you know go you go to clear dot com but the rest of us were just --"
" So EV DO is pretty much it for for wireless access for most of the most the United States. "
" Well there's EV DO and there's a just EPA and they're both three G and one of them is sprint and Verizon and the other one is AT&T and T-Mobile. So. All four carriers are offering options for your laptop. T-Mobile is a little cheaper than the other ones -- and I forgot to."
" Actually cricket. -- cricket city they have a great deal and I think San Francisco as a cricket sitting right. I have no idea I I -- this is -- to -- heard of cricket are they use are there is so there -- cellular provider. The day."
" Yet there are smaller carrier they have a forty dollar EV DO service. Then you have team mobile. Where they -- fifty dollars three G service but you know T-Mobile doesn't have the greatest nationwide network and Dan AT&T sprint Verizon all clocking in at sixty. Everybody pretty much has a five gigabyte data cap now aren't. Yes absolutely you can't use these connections as your primary home connection you'll go over that five gig cap would that work has the fastest speeds -- It really depends on where you are mean if you're in a good AT&T city AT and t.'s technology is the fastest. And T-Mobile is also putting down really fast three G technology right now they're gonna be even faster than AT&T next year. But you gotta have that coverage that's -- for frequent travelers I just recommend Verizon. Maybe there are a little slower but they're everywhere."
" How do you need any tips on looking at the map and figure out you know whether or not that talent you're going is actually in the fast EV DO area or. Or is it just generally sort of you know go there and find out."
" Yes I mean that's a tough call isn't it most of the carriers now have maps that show three G coverage. But some extent it does have to cross your fingers and hoped that the map is right. Now there's one other EV DO option I want to tell you about I've got here this little virgin mobile prepaid EV DO stick. And take about a month who. No no like pay by the megabyte real you by -- you -- buckets at 250 megs or gig at a time. And for heavy users it's a lot more expensive than a monthly contract. But there's no contract like you can just buy a gate when you need a gig and they use Sprint's networks that they're everywhere so that's a good option for -- users is."
" During any more popular on the other networks at this point."
" Most of the carriers are pulling back on tethering Verizon is the -- friendly -- carrier right now they're offering that option from us to their found."
" Is the -- don't tell wireless. They knew EV DO prouder that they've built up a way to go these days there is a UB USB dongle pretty much still the best."
" That well if you're just gonna use if you're just -- is say EV DO or three G with one computer all the time. You're USB stick is totally the way to go out -- give it the fastest connection. That pipes you're network directly into your computer that said I love the MiFi it's really easy to use it just turn it on an Apple Wi-Fi hotspots. Now you might lose some performance in that intermediate stage basically. But in terms of ease of use and of getting especially multiple devices online at once it's just awesome."
" You can you bench in the past cell -- company deals on notebooks with built in -- basically like a little mini PC Carter micro PC card inside of there. How about -- the cellphone company deals on notebooks that mean you get it built in but you can't share move your motive is anybody like me to say share an account between a built in motive and USB dongle or anything like that."
" Now now and I'm not loving the subsidized netbook deals for the very reasons you're saying it it makes you less flexible like I hate this idea that your computer is tied to one cellular network. I mean you -- of this computer for three or four years you might not switch carriers you don't want to throw out your notebook."
" That would be a bad thing. Earlier we are talking emits an eighteen to heat their technology if you're -- one of the cities and it's a pretty short list of cities that have it it has the best performance. Is what what kind of different are we talking between. Performance wise -- AT&T. Verizon and sprint and on the on the list."
" Verizon and sprint -- on average cutting around me one point five to two mega bits ranged. It again twenties AT&T seven point two cities and T-Mobile is turning that on this here as well. You can get up to three to 3.5. If you're lucky. And yet. It's a definite improvement."
" Is that -- is that is that there with shared amongst everybody else logging in. To some extent but I am talking about real world numbers how cool that's actually pretty good. So four G is that coming what's next since WiMax is gonna slowly roll out city by city doesn't seem like it's gonna be the ultimate mobile warrior Internet access. Being so -- report next."
" There's three different approaches coming number one sprint and clear wire have there WiMax and it's slowly marching like you know parade of dance across the country. I can't. Number two team mobile is installing something called HSP a clots and this is super three G. With that real life speeds up to eleven megabit a second while and the yet this is gonna start kicking in at the end of this year you'd see a lot more of this through next year. Dan Verizon next year they start to turn on their forgy. That's gonna have speeds eight to twelve mega bits per second it's gonna get faster with time you're gonna need all new equipment all new phones for this network."
" Sergeant thank you so much your time awesome awesome information is always ladies and gentlemen you my -- is it. Coverage of cell phones providers and fluffy toys up at PC mag dot com I highly recommend it and we got some links in the show notes."
" Comin' up next what does it take it a laptop or iPhone into a musical instrument the answer may surprise you but at -- we like to thank one of the episodes sponsors up. It even ripping CD's insist on an MP3 encoding he's probably just happened doesn't anything including apps that there's quality. " Funny it's darn irresistible this extent the 61. If you're looking for yet another way to discover new music look no further than the 61. This website -- social network of sorts imagine democratically. The hottest new tracks from relatively new and undiscovered artists. This when he bypassed the whole marketing machine and -- tunes -- really resonated with listeners and to make things a little more fun he can complete -- based on the music you listen to him. As a new user -- priceless -- four different -- on the home page for at least five minutes each. You insert by genres that's. Fun to listen to music is organized five minutes to regulate when you're just looking for some different job or to -- tip. There's also points system called reputation which earned by completing quests and Harding music and performs well. And like VH one pop up videos can get little informational tidbits about the artists as you listen to them."
" So to discover new music and have fun doing it check out the 61 today and thanks attempt ceiling percent of respondent."
" We have states feel -- del Puerto but then hits the mainstream sweet spot something more high end and a netbook. Adobe still has the classic black thinkpad designs that T 400 offers the amazing keyboard. Well the feeling grew to love hearing Thinkpads were working typing all day they start at 750 bucks a dual core processors the T 400 S I'm holding costs half the 1600 dollars -- in an optional. Touch screen with some useful integrated controls just hit the big red button and start playing around. Now check this out the patterns on the IdeaPad line are strong side -- these are consumer products the IdeaPad U series and I'm holding and this is the pattern I was talking about. Very shiny hits the sweet spot with an optional core two duo processors 1113 fourteen and fifteen inch screens and it's like this two point 97 pounds. This is a very very light notebook in some decent performance thinking netbook the IdeaPad S lineup offers two point you parents -- these atom powered models along with twelve inch models that be configured with. Nvidia ion GPUs which -- as much -- three gigabytes of ram so that takes the price up to 649. Dollars but this is a very very powerful netbook. Now if you want to be totally over the top look for the Lenovo ThinkPad W 700 DE mobile workstation for hard core field computing we're talking three to 6000 dollars plus he can get a core two extreme. Eight gigabytes of ram the seventeen inch 400 -- panel which is pretty good for outdoors and how about the second ten point six inch monitor and the biggest track pad I had ever seen in my life. Down here along with the regular track pad and of course the classic films stick pointing stick old Manila gonna kill me I never remember that trademark this is. Really hardcore just don't ask about the battery life worth the wait. Of course laptops aren't just about games Internet work or killing small animals they could also be about music has Veronica found that would she interviewed Stanford laptop orchestras founder. --"
" Our next guest says something very special he's taken popular everyday personal technology and turn them into a very unique and cool musical experience. Joining me now as the founder of Stanford's laptop orchestra got -- welcome this. Think you trying to. -- film audience on your background you've done a ton of work intersecting audio programming performance iPhone apps you programmer musician art teacher by discipline. Them. -- I'd love -- may find the time to do all of those different things but we'll start with Slorc that's a standard laptop orchestra had expected -- the idea come from."
" A lot of work is surely can prone to -- and not orchestra. Post graduate student at Princeton team actually getting -- EH EU science and working with and -- and easy. -- and charisma works from start -- 2005 IT faculty and this idea he regularly perform all the time with computers. Can you interface musical expression. Han. And also -- him myriad -- lock up these performances. Let's hear -- And he's pretty is kind of went its successor. He said bluntly -- Opposite strategy hasn't filed Princeton and then I started at Stanford 2007. That's almost certain Slorc he standard ports."
" They also have kind of a companion orchestra Avi stand for mobile phone orchestra. -- it has nothing going on for as long as Lorca is -- it's relatively nano."
" Something that is it's relatively. Older slower. Acting doesn't sound doesn't it. There's actually -- you should see -- from mobile Austria. And we are working on right now. And boots -- east. Smartphones. From Nokia section for the iPhone and I miss you can use even announce. And experience with you know when Mars our -- and easy easy spaces and he. -- and more recently with.

" They also have kind of a companion orchestra Avi stand for mobile phone orchestra. -- it has nothing going on for as long as Lorca is -- it's relatively nano."
