USB Turntables: Good or Bad?
Friday, February 15th, 2008 running time 37:24
Liana Lehua from Girls Gone Geek joins us as cohost. SoundSoap for noise reduction, USB turntables, Audacity = Great Free Audio Editing, 2GB of memory vs. 4GB and the UltraClamp
Thinking about upgrading to 4GB of memory? Skip it if your'e on a 32 bit version of windows... tho OS X and Linux users should be good to go. We think 2GB is the sweet spot for folks that aren't video/audio editing or running mad emulators.
Seth was curious about USB Turntables vs. Patrick's old school turntable/phono preamp combo (the preamp handles RIAA equalization along with boosting the levels) so we put Ion's TTUSB10 and Stanton's T.90 USB to the test. (One of 'em did a much better job than the other!
Pedco's UltraClamp is a slick way to turn your car window into a steady platform for your camera... you can use just about anything up to an inch and a half wide.
Audacity, is an outstanding open source (free as in speech and price) audio editing tool... and it's our free file o' the week.
Need more noise reduction on your audio files? Then Bias SoundSoap 2 should be on your short list.
Is it worth spending the extra cash to make your domain private Sure, if you think folks are going to track you down. (Both Liana and Patrick have gone this route!) Some registrars are more serious about your privacy than others, btw!

Web sites and music because one -- post for -- likes music. And then I cover some different things like I covered the Lenz baby which is my favorite you -- put into photography analyst -- is place. So always fun yeah. So -- theatrical lens that you can manipulate front of it but it's really. Focus camera. With shallot peeled and so. You really have to like take the time to figure out what you want to photographed before you capture it but some amazing images are still amazingly it's really cool toy to have. And put it out and actually -- it's. We'll settle class yes a lot of close ups of just ran things like she used like food bodies -- like it close but she is it cool stuff -- Everybody has been buying -- it. Us. Audience. -- a fire if your response absolutely. If you download -- quicktime HD version of the show you might have noticed."
" Some. Me -- that's last week the trust me we got your mail. And they want to apologize for the for the video and I thank you. For your support of their continuing efforts to deliver the best quality video with the -- and download time for you and you know that's not only -- he has been writing about. The -- the honor of firing off of your comments."
" Paint you also. So last week we talked gotten a thumbnail views and OS-X -- a ton of emails in response to Patrick's comments about the lack of thumbnail views. Last week from -- Roger Peter Austin Eli quite a few other folks. Quite a few wrote in about fans cover flow view in leopard it's like -- out covers and I can't have fortunately Patrick isn't running -- version of OS-X and -- their mind. But you cannot see all the JPEG photos and a folder with a couple weeks OS-X to see how next week on -- excellent."
" Cool very helpful and actually as I wanna thank everybody who actually wrote in the directions from his. I've been whining about this for years nobody point -- while we're on the subject I'm using a MacBook pro work and -- MacBook was my primary -- and -- that Vista and XP desktop at -- So -- on the -- bad Mac basher because. I use Macs every day at home and at work and actually use this to XP every day at home and at that. Its its complicated it's now. But it. I don't want to go there are like comic of the matter in Australia right said. I saw the latest Tekzilla you interested seeing inside the possible switcher that's optical audio switcher here's a picture of the inside of a whopping fifteen dollar Australian dollar version fifteen dollar Australian one -- it's city. Around my house it's surprisingly less complicated and kindness it would be. Yeah majority from Sydney 6%. Is that we I don't bring something for changes -- cool."
" The gas tied up my fill out that it's like telling getting those corrections isn't very helpful cell. Let's put back on the right track to forget sometimes that they never noticed any comments -- questions who want more of them definitely so if you want to get something -- chest. It just -- something cool you can email listen to Tekzilla. I Revision 3 that cop Patrick."
" But that won't -- what are the spot in the paid our bills yeah bullets I don't care -- Blu-ray chances are local that also has puppies for each view rentals. Yes I'm getting -- done today if you whatever space for everything -- Blu-ray Ares V Netflix available via. That's on top of the zillions and it's your enemy titles and big Hollywood flicks will remain -- slid into our house on the almost daily basis. That you're suffering -- media just can't find what you want locally get a free trial. And that puts act comes last Tekzilla might in the report -- to say thank you for your support."
" Well it is a never ending hunt for useful gadgetry every so often and find something -- cram into the back back -- case in point. This thing is is pad goes -- plan that might actually have one of these on the great cross country trip to my cousin's wedding last summer. I've actually -- of the pictures called universal window -- total fit just about anything. It's you can cram in between the Internet have jostled pipes -- those yes you can turn your car windows nuisance sticks. It's built like a brick outhouse extruded aluminum pretty heavy duty plastic. And a pair ball and socket joints on the continue to crank this thing down on our pocket of -- here. Which takes a while sometimes to cranky damage -- that won't like this -- clamp down and we standard quarter by twenty. Bread counts up. Which I probably should put on here before we test it and we got a terrible -- in here seeking pretty much move it and lock it down. In any position you want such as this one towards the camera towards the ceiling we can pop we move it over. It -- shockingly well and actually works really well with car windows holds four pounds six if you push it so super huge lenses won't work into eternal vigilance should be a problem. Made USA if you're into that 24 dollars and head coupons dot com going to find mind. Locally here in San Francisco at an outdoor store so if you're looking for a way to have something stable to attach a camera to really great if you're shooting that night were if you want to stand in the picture with your family without putting it on the hood of your car. Everybody crouching. Check it out -- joining us now. This kind of scary the man responsible for the very set and the studio we're standing in right now mister David -- off. The threat of hate Macs but recently found himself compelled to buy a Mac."
" MacBook Air. You just -- easily Stan. I did that as far as OS-X but I love their hardware but really that's thats kinda different decision people who can't run -- any Macs are great to hear it's -- or agree PC. This is -- you do admit how much you enjoyed that Apple hardware. It's it it does -- quite a bit to be honest with you but I've learned to live with myself for Kinderwater the only -- it's like you and RC you know you're modern rock -- both running like Dell notebooks are you -- desktop your new Dell notebook you've got that little piece I have several species go home -- Why did you decide its is just it was it was that pretty. Is that pretty and I had some money to burn. I had no practical application for other than that then I already have you know Sony vile the the ultra mobile -- PC that they actually sell which has would be me -- battery life. Actually -- got the extended one which which the battery itself weighs more than actual on the air from. -- That's a little sliding one do you actually unlike the unlike the the ultra mobile ultra mobile ultra mobile PCQ back doesn't use the keyboard on this one. Yes you can actually use the keyboard."
" In fact one of the funny things this is that I like this keyboard better then the MacBook pros. These are your duties the keys actually dip in the middle those that fills up that are in your fingers -- tighter and I like the black -- a good -- and could feel for it and it doesn't -- what you are. This actually does look over I guess they are backlit displays on them. As well as the track pad is actually considerably larger on this in the MacBook pros. Not to mention a multi touch with the party got addicted to on the thing. So I suspect there's a downside the MacBook Air yes there is absolutely no ports on that thing whatsoever although the poor over here. To -- there's one USB port which is already taken up by ethernet dongle. Bomb and then the other pore over there is the mini GBI or the micro TV -- they call it. So you can play going to second display and they pretty much use all notebooks right. For the but the problem is is that you run -- a USB ports real quick because you know one isn't enough. And it doesn't a lot of powers like not -- again like pocket drive and an ethernet adapter into it encourages the help. So now I find myself carrying this USB -- plus power supply everywhere."
" Just say yes it's if you actually want to do something other than sort of type and directly -- the screening can be a little frustrating."
" Right I'll also you are stuck with the battery life and about you know fortified -- and get about four hours run time on it that's too bad that's better than MacBook pros well that's way better than that. But you can't change at the -- like everybody. It was. Com how many times you've bought the new battery for you know. Well from there is aware and terror. A lot Clinton actually just like wearing it down right you know I have had to deal with today I -- people."
" The Google president -- the pillows felt it and I've I've yet had met one person who's actually ever bought a replacement batteries for notebook after. And yeah it's prayers and keep a computer for three or four years he's within the notebook disintegrates before the battery doors. We've gotten smashed the screen you have and some issues with the power cord Q."
" Yes that was a big problem the MacBook pros -- we could see this the way the magnetic latch works on its real easy to stick those and but I means. You pretty much have to flip it over upside down to give its lineup right. Because the -- so strong it will actually make it locked in without actually sitting in the socket it's actually it's making their -- the in the socket. And that's not a socket sort of scenario in the coffee shop trying to impress the ladies. Com this little heart you can flip it over play it and trying to find power adapter that part of the Kevin Rose school by the -- Apple products in the coffee shop and and having you none are as close to where in the wool cap. That's the pecker peck peck. Would you buy it again. Yeah it actually it runs boot camp really well on windows XP runs great. The biggest problem I found accident both of the biggest compliment that I have is that the multiplex attach. And that's what campus okay. -- I didn't do this and considerate that's that's equivalent of a blue screen and analysts had. But the multi touch the two finger salute on the keyboard if you right click in windows that's really nice. The biggest opinion I had is. There's no ethernet drivers and to boot camp for this the plumber and there's no ethernet port and Italy and reports -- you're trying to get hooked up your kind of screw. You're gonna be using my wife by all rights exactly what you should I like that I like it I'll keep -- it -- it's a Gateway products. It's the Gateway product I mean where in have an iPhone. Always. -- on the view on my on number three."
" Who wouldn't think mister -- for joining us if Hillary gave detailed personal account of this machine check out the show notes. We have and Tekzilla dot com or revision3.com. Slash Tekzilla or if you want to emailed game. And ask him more about the MacBook Air please. Tekzilla that are -- three dot com now just last week geeks gather in Palm Springs forget about 2008 the and I quote premiere launch venue for new products technologies and companies. We're out of the list we never will be -- our very own CEO Jim Iraq we go there for years he's on the list here's our pick what debuted at the show yeah. So here's."
" The problem you got all these device says he got computers you've got files and folders at home. But you gotta fire wall you can actually access that stuff at home when you're out somewhere else. And if you drive that up one of these cameras we've ever done it police surveillance cameras you know it's impossible actually see it anywhere else without paying so -- lot of money. I think that's probably you'll -- trying to solve that got this new software program that it. It's basically beat -- made easy and it turns anything virtually anything into a little web server. So what happens is you loaded up on your desktop this computer. And you take a folder anything else dragon in here and turn it into what they call a device so these are all different boulders that have been shared inside this. You'll X interface. They could be from anywhere computers all over the world and what they do is rather than opening up a port on your -- or or are doing one of those things trying to get access to they have this secret sauce which they wouldn't explain to me in any details I really understand how it works. But basically that allow you to go in there and then in an encrypted away. And get access to any of these things behind the firewall our home wherever you might be and not just on computers either so you've got stuffed shirt here and -- some of the guys are the company is actually coming from. Com our homes in Palo -- or wherever. You can get a web interface they see right over here we've got a web interface where. Those same things whether it's demo pegs or home surveillance if you click on one of the of them and I have no idea what this is -- is likely gonna. It'll bring it up it'll bring up this home surveillance cameras right here and the other at somebody's house and now we're in Palm Springs that looks like it's really Palo Alto or something. I think that white car out there -- be broken into it using cameras like this could -- anything -- earlier this. That also works on the iPhone so I've got those same pictures right here. On the iPhone that I have there and those are all coming from somebody's house behind a firewall the middle of nowhere well Palo -- and really kind of a cool way to as they say as easy as instant messaging take a -- take advice take anything that can live on a network. And make it's terrible and accessible. Without worrying about firewalls and other things in a way that you can easily accessed anywhere and I think about the security okay getting username and password. -- that as long as you don't tell anybody your username and password. All your stuff will be safe so you -- choose a good password when you use it. Your -- and why oh I see -- Available now in beta check it out and if you want to get your files when you're on the road or worker wherever this could work for you know what's scary thing that they told me though is that. Because they've worked outside of the traditional -- security. It pretty much works anywhere there was a guy got done us Department of Defense or some really secret government plays set this up and compromise the security so. We'll see how that'll work -- your business you might not want to tell people about this but for everybody else checking out."
" Face it folks that was quite a bit more demo you can take up a website at demo dot com. To see some the other folks that we intends displaying their new wares at the show. After the break USB turntable or -- your PC the easy way plus this week's free download all coming up when Tekzilla returns. Free software does not socks older accident freedom free episode this week's free software pick is audacity it's a free open source audio editor on the windows Mac and Linux though because they have their -- public's. -- Simultaneously. Even got the hardware. You can edit cut copy and -- change could without changing Nintendo. He got -- limited arguably you support Ogg Vorbis and MP3 export -- into the public -- static your basic -- background is not so good with the clicks and pops. And even sports plug in that you might ultimately more expensive audio editing software this -- for giving me crazy but hey export to a -- that -- one in the news media player -- who got six is disabled version if you like rightfully entitled one that freedom for beta. Got totally features but it might just."
" Crash yeah. Why don't have the body allowed back to -- fine converting my records digital audio I was a lot of years well. Yes my wife just as child this. It's a very cool -- nothing very necessary and I -- Got a bunch of stuff that cumulative this is -- be really to -- the kids -- captured to capture audience but I in Adelaide audiences that yes you get it and took the agony to carry you -- does is say yeah there. -- back to get some millennium after he added it to be making art. If you wanted to let you know and people despite converting my records digital audience after it a lot of years did I didn't ask why we -- New -- And -- understand it actually unit testing couple different models and when you found out."
" Well okay that the reason we didn't use USB turntable right which is essentially. The regular old turntable with a list the analog to digital converter. Built into the back right so basically you know you can. Out of a liner photo output on the back. But what if it figures like he directly -- in your computer via a there is USB connection. So essentially your -- be able assistant turntable with USB built into USB. -- converter I didn't use one because. I thirty a lot of pretty decent turntable and I donate photo -- happens as the REV equalization. And it seems silly to me to go out by another turntable one word at the moment work but Mikey said before about people wrote in asking about his return cables and hardly any good. Actually they're they're better than I expected I want it really impressed for this one right here was. Islands TT USB hands 599 dollars. Do you have build quality on it is not what you would call robust it's essentially plastic. Yeah actually picked it up quickly it weighs nothing. Including the the platter so -- it's not a direct drive turntable base that is a rubber band that turns the table. And the audio quality was not the best and there's a little bit of detectable background noise. That you that -- US BO five when it cheap like. You know inexpensive turntable you don't want to deal with connecting your audio caller. You won't be easy piece -- news being is basically just shows up as an input and yours in your. Sound card selections. Go for the US TO 500 box you know spend forty bucks to upgrade the cartridge on of the cartridges the part that holds that -- it's the cool this deep down inside of it and that upgrade cartridge on it and I think that's you know a nice little and waiting -- like 150 box. Now if you don't have a turntable and -- used to be more high in real detectives this device from -- which that he got a nine USB turntable. That's like that when bullets there notices."
" This is a little bit more weighty for sure."
" Yeah it's a director of turntable which because it kind of the best way of doing it has cozy and the way the country doesn't. The out of laugh about that a copy of minor threat. My -- second album please don't yell at me putting it down there's not an original version it's a direct drive turntable. -- I considered the best way professional way essentially DJ turntable. And constructions. A lot more heavy duty. You can basically checked. You've got the should applaud this and basically you have the ability to check the speed does send you along with thirty -- and -- and you know the DJ stuff like pitch -- card stock perverse. Or his work you know recording now backwards is that just in reverse effect of audacity. You messages that's -- Mac is a lot more expensive about 300 dollars but this is aid. This is a very solid. Very solid turntable. -- kept prices in the differences between two miles so that's what sells for 200 dollars USB. TT TT US content is gonna -- about 200 -- That you version of it -- a couple pure features that -- they -- little eight inch audio input on this you can use the on board to act. I'd go for the US BO 500. Bucks and upgrade cartridge. This stance is big step up about 300 dollars. Excuse me but the audio quality was a bit better I'm a little bit less noise the levels were a lot lower but everything that. It seemed to be a little more solid mature going to turn out actually at the same exact -- Europe analogue to digital converter. But you know we basically pulled out. It my albums. Because -- actually wanted to like -- something -- most the stuff I listen to us like punk yeah. You know of minor threat but you're not really you know executive a lot of new ones out there so we don't like the -- 180 -- pressing -- John Coltrane album. And these are kind of crazy these -- the new albums are doing with the audio file and her head. -- Sound. But you know what this is like anything else. You get what you pay for. Yes so would you recommend these same kind of mention a little bit about us how hearts team that she's definitely really -- people use them. With any Peterson oh yeah would you recommend at the end game -- getting ladies first well if you go on if you generated turntable right. To connected to your computer you're gonna need with the college party pre you -- pretty until about 45 dollars and then you can just plug it into the series it puts on -- If you don't turntable then I would you know there and can't borrow one if you could borrow a turntable borrow it if you don't wanna turntable argued that violent. I would suggest spending a little extra money go to extend the I just wasn't bill so yeah basically if you like if you don't have the golden years you know if you're an accurate don't US BO five violence that's as cheap as you're gonna get to convert that -- to convert final to a digital. If you're really serious audio person and then I would spend -- put more money goes something like the stands. And definitely -- with a future deals spend like forty bucks to upgrade the cartridge but it's gonna be here. Your biggest sort of audio improvement police."
" Constant definitely better solution when I'm more from -- hair. What you -- wired yet but he isn't actually record via. Actions recording into I -- think I think a you know it was funny because claim it's -- wanted free stuff to -- I was trying to put into audacity. But actually my Brothers one of its -- has -- on it. An older donors risky but yet -- pretty -- Some name now that you have the LP digitize had to clean up the pops and hit from the plate and is it comes with. Record play back."
" Quote it's kind of funny you could get like a brand new just out of the rapper record. You know you clean it and if you don't dust off -- definitely -- snaps in there my -- were licences you know we cyclones. Cool -- Eddie Graham audio well agreed pressing. And we didn't have for -- didn't have and please don't you know it's actually been -- to clean with but it Clinton anyway of course you're hearing all that it's basically the Pentagon Dustin. It's telling. But nothing good analogue experience. Do want to be used one of the best things one that you zones -- ever seen is it was part of Microsoft. Plus pack. Cloud like this twenty dollar plus -- and they had this audio capture tool and it did everything you really you can view which is -- the audio make it easy to break files up. And then to label the files because none of this comes as -- you know burning man. Assisi ripping a CD in all -- its label. And it did some pretty decent. Clicked and pop removal. And one of these notices his dislike. Thirty -- thousand applications that are like we're the press don't peace communal revitalization tool for -- don't computer. And Olsen saw most of were like written in the early ninety's they still look at. That you really handy. Those compression one of the cooler ones out there you clearer than audacity which worked really great like analog tapes not to -- with a clicks and pops. Is parental bias so and you -- ticker -- hits clicks crackles buzzing hum rumbles noise. It works in both windows and act which is really nice. Room and XP right now and it runs not just as a standalone application does apply again he would direct X or like heaviest CEOs or something called RT yes which. -- you tennis -- in the guilty by direct explosions are obvious you plugin does actually -- the poignant. So this is they've basically. -- actually get it opens the liberal media file them."
" so there's millions from like I've movie I dvd if you're on a Mac Intel."
" Here they will they actually use these in our editing days for some of the shows they have silly it's kind of a team gets -- something they can try to clean up the audio at this. And that's -- pretty cool tools like basically you know you play around with it and you know you basically. It's like you're kinda like to that off up to war yes and it's it's it's kind of like the kind power tools interface to experiential benefits exercise -- you. Invest your intelligence in the software and non traditional manner. Which can be really frustrating. How much you basically embraced playing around with the knobs and see what works way when did Kelly thank you can really push the knobs are on some stuff or really Hanover didn't like what happens if he did well thing I've noticed like of the halo so like -- you know. Critics yeah hit like preserve voice and learn noise if you check your reading up -- a 100% more to process stuff the -- and this. Because. What things I've noticed that it you know you like there's pockets of that you like going to make up popped this beer and you keep throttling -- The noise removal you want to put a lot of times this theories for greedy. Very heavily process how so sometimes you needed except for the little -- you know this is part of the experience of having transfer this older media on -- you digital platform. Because you can you can make -- really. --"
" I podcast."
" and a Photoshop fun."
" Exactly we're doing something and it shows that and and it doesn't happen national -- more well it's the that he doesn't -- experiments. Business critical said it will preserve voice in there which allows you to you basically. Avoid. Hacking at the frequencies -- that -- human voice tends to be -- surveillance. And if you ever -- something that you early -- it's easy to learn the noise try to you know sort maximize its stations here in particular. Yeah."
" And it didn't you kind of want to make sure you have enough audio and maybe two to three seconds left -- time like where you can kind of sleep and -- can -- the sound is mostly can learn that Indians when you really wanted to I gotta say it's the stuff of had to deal with it has been pretty standard pops and -- it doesn't work like you know the --"
" you you told me to remove. So that's that's a pretty pretty I'll I'll play around some more powerful try to find -- glue -- or something. This sentence usually virtual voices yet --"
" The thought of amnesty to in the window that's an -- you know now that. Visually harassing actions are red and blue it was chemical thing because the blu was a sad that you do want and the -- was sent you don't want. So if you need is her lose something you couldn't hear it visually. Listen Saturday that it into overseas audiences -- red is just the sound can want to get rid of those the frequencies that are."
" Not. Both of them but do this is of clicks crackles and some of the mobile report that sometimes you get your."
" used if you had something that had Andy and what she needed Vatican 23 seconds like that stand for it to learn eternity he -- or I think. Incentive to there's a -- features secret -- really shortening it it's like no longer like ambience but the word it's like a real fast always are you basically make the -- kind of -- a longer version gave -- it in a little longer version asteroids suggesting it's looking for that particular accidentally --"
" So many on this on yet it's time. All right so hate I was able to remind you are allowing viewers -- the studios and Texas sponsored by the folks at Disney dot com. And it may not come might have a race car driver but there are big supporters revision history and sincerely steals domain names hosting shop -- they promises don't (%expletive) deal -- enough to -- register. Domain it'll make -- registration -- the box that don't take my word for your next candidate. Versus the other guys and he's got desperate appeal typing Tekzilla what is it -- chuck percent of all the president -- hosting. That's just 6071. Cents per domain name. And 25% on every hosting plan they had. Good as it gets -- and domain."
" I -- you'll answer some your email that's Berkeley school. The first -- coast this encrypt surveillance maps it. He's -- writes I hear you can make -- sort of parabolic cantenna at a premium scanned. True knows me is for -- says but it could be could it be -- herself on sort of -- horrible signal a school. Against him will be very useful grants."
" All right Chris that we began awkwardly -- college they -- bad cell phone receptionist there's something going on here. They cantenna wouldn't work recant and has basically Pringles can -- this feature Pringles can you watch very directional Wi-Fi antenna like a wire. It basically a pretty precise they write like wire the right location -- the can turn the kid. -- I've done what you've -- campus like a dozen different recipes for. They all work and fearing one would work with -- or. Cell phone if you created one that was to into the right frequencies here so could easily so -- or gigahertz or one point nine. Gigahertz. And eighteen point where you're -- and and it is not gonna work either those frequencies. However you can find probably -- like the -- frequencies for yourself use a program. So Cutler could work if you design -- right you know that frequency. -- if you look at -- Robbie. Roberts is just register your domain names the other day and then listening. Registration option which is just a few dollars more and hides the who has information. Is this worth the extra money. Well Robbie if you never had to end phone call fourteen year old that was kind of curious about your phone number of what you do it on a Friday night. Yes private registration can be very valuable the idea is and it's that's not really that new it's been around for years for itself a pay an extra fee and they sort of -- you know that you who is in his life involved Bob's phone number -- address Hotmail address. And it makes it very easy to track people now. If you like do you know if you like the -- if you had an unlisted phone number you probably want private registration. If you think paying extra for -- phone numbers frivolous and silly not necessary. Then I'd skip I mean is your phone number listed."

I saw the latest Tekzilla you interested seeing inside the possible switcher that's optical audio switcher here's a picture of the inside of a whopping fifteen dollar Australian dollar version fifteen dollar Australian one -- it's city. " The gas tied up my fill out that it's like telling getting those corrections isn't very helpful cell. Let's put back on the right track to forget sometimes that they never noticed any comments -- questions who want more of them definitely so if you want to get something -- chest. " But that won't -- what are the spot in the paid our bills yeah bullets I don't care -- Blu-ray chances are local that also has puppies for each view rentals.
So if you need is her lose something you couldn't hear it visually. Listen Saturday that it into overseas audiences -- red is just the sound can want to get rid of those the frequencies that are."
" Not. Both of them but do this is of clicks crackles and some of the mobile report that sometimes you get your."
