Change Your Password Or Die!

We're always talking about backing up, but we don't touch on password security too often. The recent phishing assault on Windows Live Hotmail has us thinking about it this week! One critical thing to to is changing them regularly. We talk about why you should change 'em, passwords you should avoid if you want to stay safe online, and why password managers make staying secure a lot easier. Password managers we mention on the show include: KeePass, RoboForm, OS X's Keychain.

Free Sofware: Unarchiver!

This week's Freebie Download Pick is The Unarchiver. Everyone needs a good unzipping tool, especially OS X users, since OS X's built in tool leaves you high and dry when it comes time to un-pack RARs, 7-zips, Stuffit and a host of weird formats like NDS and ADF. The Unarchiver's goal is to be able to extract anything you give it... and it's well on it's way, and even pretty tolerant of foreign characters in your file names if you're getting files from overseas. Check it out!

Is It Time To Go SSD? Anand's Got An Answer!

Solid state drives are a hot topic amongst PC enthusiasts. They're super fast, fairly expensive, and, earlier this year, prone to various kinds of FAIL. Are the latest crop of SSDS worthy of your hard earned dollars? Patrick sat down with the best SSD expert we know, AnandTech.com's Anand Shimpi to get the cold hard facts on performance, longevity and future of these solid state wonders. We talked a lot about backing up at the recent assault on windows live Hotmail users as a reminder that we haven't talked too much about how strict security specifically the importance of changing your passwords regularly. It's common in large companies to force you to change your logic pattern on a regular basis on it's not so common for most home users and definitely should be. I'm wondering why why I flip book. -- a lot -- you -- the same password the more likely it is that someone has stolen it whether by looking over your shoulder using a keyboard -- cracking the database at the website well you get the idea. " Michael if your friends are running windows they should download insider for many geek dot net one of our viewers Jake was just emailing me about it preference Hak5 talked about that on episode 604. Essentially it's a tool to analyse the Wi-Fi activity in your home or office so cool looking yeah it's actually one of the -- Wi-Fi inspection tools and never seen. Fired up gives you turn of all the local access points there's strength in something went eyeball the channels and was really cool is they actually have a visual representation of the strength of all the wireless access points. Across the channels in the charts elevens over here like five stand here. You'll probably see Eveready your friends neighborhood music channel six he might -- try different -- knows he can reduce interference. Put it and notebook you -- to quickly inventories signal strength around your workplace or in your case around your friend's home. You might find moving wireless access point to another location and -- can make a significant difference in the quality of Wi-Fi reception. Q what she's been really cool democratic -- analyzer light you can see all the art activity not just wireless access points. Choices like these eerie look like people four gigahertz cell phones microwave -- All in the capital for two white -- the white -- stuff and it's really coax it'll give you if you have the horsepower and -- notebook they'll actually give you a short. In real time all the activity you can basically try to figure out. What the heck is going on it's pretty well I really wanna see which analyzer does when Hak5 reviews -- they're gonna play around the full version soon so keep an eye out for that one insider there. Very very cool."

" To sit here optional thing -- eloquently. Make me think that any -- the -- of different camera asking question and try to -- and fifteen seconds. Public questioning YouTube and muscling your fat question with questions and -- It's easy and today. That's happened on should be at SSD -- is. Time to thank our sponsors Squarespace. " Looks like it's time for another website we just can't get yeah. Let's say that we just."

" Just too darn near this this -- undergo the thing about social networking is they can make a lot of friends that you well. Don't really know that well this time the sense especially -- something can't beat -- in their address and send it in tiger now. Who is a site that allows kids and real world gets to people's virtual address. A handle on Twitter FaceBook or even their mobile phone number and those -- connected address and the recipient is -- them get depending. Never that information gets to the center. Now the company isn't just -- mail proxy. At the moment they're only certain things -- defendants gifts. Like delicious candy is -- teachers simply aren't perfect for thank you Carolyn Twitter that you like to get no better. Without freak her out by asking for help address. Oh and don't worry you're sending a gift that no wait for the recipients get the Senate to address either unless of course they asking for today thank you. Person."

" About state drives are hot topic among PC and is yes they're super fast inexpensive it earlier this year from various kinds -- I elitist problem that's Steve's worthy of your hard earned dollar Patrick sat down with the best at -- expert we know. And non should be to get cold hard facts of performance among Japanese and the future of these solid state --"

" And I'm should be editor in chief -- tech dot com has been very excited about solid state drives for a long time you might know was assisting is. Have been pretty frustrated with the performance issues that many of the models to hit the street earlier this year in fact he's pretty much the only definitive right up on those problems. Things seem to have settled down let's get the word from the man himself running the benchmarks and I'm welcome back to Tekzilla things that I gotta say is it. Is it finally safe to buy it is that I've I was by the by want to read your articles backed away -- but everything can change that."

" Last month for this piece. Yet it's it's one of those things where sometimes things change with -- men and sometimes they do -- and it's actually genuine change. So at the end of last year right before the Intel drives first came out. The market was really really confusing we had these thousand dollars societies using SOC flash network thousand dollars for like sixty days. And then we have this new class of sub 500 dollar drives which ended up being total crap there'll within -- things they that you saw. Those drives are almost completely out of the market -- And we have this great option we have -- we recommend it's essential for a freight be explained by them. But it was 600 dollars treaty gates. It and just throw your operating system -- video game and you're. Yeah you know it's it's on those things where if you put like wow -- any of them of those on it. You're actually paying in the multiple hundreds of dollars just happened game installed at that time right so what's happened cents. Is. -- he's teammate at least on on not name the actual flash Andy Andy yes. Fifteen nanometer it was what Intel used in the generation one that's when -- found them. More so occupant and we're pretty for an. So certainly. Suddenly the price drop. So what used to have for about 600 dollars is now down in -- like mid to -- to -- dollar range. And that's get pretty. It's so wonderful about -- case. You know you probably picketing your primary drive your operating system you may be warned you major applications or your notebook hard drive. What -- you looking in terms of performance improvement. Tremendous writes it the way I view these things in the ways of my personal system is. When -- 886020. Gig drives has here OS and applications. Right and that's it. And this sort of performance improvement you get ranges from everything works the same as always -- two order of magnitude improvement. And and I'll get to the reasoning behind that second but that the perfect test is you -- fire on your PC. Turn around for a sleeper here. Just installed some updates have to do -- You know when you hit -- desktop it's not usable right right all the extra stuff has to happen. Windows is doing who knows what in the background and this is the much crap happening completely windows exactly and for. That makes it unusable right so if you go to fire up Internet Explorer. Chrome Firefox -- email. And a couple apps whatever it is. Those things take you know a minute. -- set to fire even if you have like 23 testimonials system that's how that's. And the SSD will will severely severely reduce. So I -- I called fresh fast which is. -- machine from scratch fire three apps and time on it takes. -- takes about a minute on the world's fastest desktop hard drive on a cluster right on four Corning element in this is a big system. See you go for about a minute down to about six and a half seconds that's prediction if it's an order of magnitude yes certainly. So and the reason you get that is because. If you look at the way windows and all these applications work it's culmination of some sequential reads and writes but a lot of small file random reads and writes. And that truly is the weakness mechanical storage right because you physically have platters so it mover here drop the damn they gonna -- here exactly you can't move -- the speed electrons -- at the speed of you know. -- temblor hit exactly -- a bunch of those operations together and it starts it'll painful. And that's why you know what what Microsoft everyone I've been working on for the past several years is how to hide that had a -- as much as possible. So that's something that nasty stuff to deal. So good SSD has an order of magnitude improvement in terms of random read write operations is that gonna help you as much where's -- running Photoshop. War final cut pro Soviet traditionally use is uses -- memory as much of your hard drive as possible yet it pretty much helps everything right it's just how much does. The most noticeable is an duality characterize it as one -- you launch applications it launches as if it were in memory -- Right it's that fast. It helps a lot with having antivirus running in the background. Because one of the most painful things antiviruses. It makes everything super slot because it's taken back to the hard drive exactly. And you know what you find is you know there's a there's a metric that we look at which is. I operations percent. -- And if you look at the that the random reader right -- capable on the fastest desktop hard drives here in -- hundred range random 10300. Don't -- it yet if you look at the fastest SS ID's even well used in their worst case performance. You're talking about 10000. That's the look better right -- and and you look at looking you do with 10000 miles versus three to 400 or one of 300. You can do more stuff you can start doing. Encryption you can start doing real time virus scanning -- it doesn't actually impact performance -- you can fire up. Every application in your start menu at the same time. And it also works really well under Linux and --"

" That's a good thing yet so you view -- and a lot of time with notebooks running necessities are you seeing any particular battery life and that's. It does it seems like battery and partners for you rotating media seems to be so optimize you know the department at this point you know are you getting any. You that your outlook practices filters or battery life and others not."

" Not much yet I've seen as much as ten to 20% and depending on the test and configuration. Ultimately you don't have to spend a monitor your so these things do you use less power. It definitely is a lot less power in the best -- and and you know there there idol Paris pushing notebooks is in you know its its comparable if not better than idle power on on -- hard drive that you've completely shut down. So it's it's you know it's good it's not gonna pay duty the double your battery life but you might see up to an extra ten to 20% this patina."

" If it's equivalent -- greenhouse much it yet I think fundamentally that the biggest benefit is performance if you get it to assist. We'll talk about good assist these versus bad necessities because you you missed the until the actually I've accidentally that's kind of that's that's pretty much what normal human beings can afford it you know. If there have a large carping let's say yes and then others it's how to drive hosted it was easy comes to mind because invariably it would -- them onto bigger tires but what's easiest person -- we're there we're looking at life. 300 gigabytes. For significantly less money -- problem 120 gigabytes. The world how are that this kind of what I will and also in the second here drives are the second tier drive's doing --"

" So sit the way I look at -- it at three viable options in the market right after you have. It dries based on the Intel control and he drives based on the sensing controller and tries based on non dealings -- Into Linksys cream company projects Samsung guys. And they can keep an orbit -- competitive product. The majority of those disease lineup and a lot of the other manufacturers like a patriots super talent sure they use in the links. Those drives there they're kind of overall peak performance -- not quite as good as Intel's -- if cheaper. Right and I you know I think in -- finally at the point now where if you are on running on a stable firmware from them then. It's it's good enough. Right and you're not really giving up anything now in the past you know they have some growing pains and stuff like that and and some there a bit different -- are some of their. More on the edge and it kind of stuff that they're releasing his is maybe not what I recommend for a stable home personal system. But. The stuff that you can go -- actually it. On the Samsung drive is what comes in the Apple's. One of those details. I'm not big -- Wasn't. I you know it it does really well with with -- Read right. Sequential random performance what have you until you get to a very news Dayton. And when you're in that state its its still okay but it's it's. -- luxury items even if she bonds are sure because there -- cheaper though they're more expensive and harder strength. So if you're gonna pay the premium I needed to be good in all its. And I and that's why americanization is if you can afford it into a drive if if you can't. You know the vandal struck terror revival turn."

" As for the interim the until drive this is the primary businesses. Just that it does such a good job of managing -- writing to the memory -- it. Yeah indices of that the other prices is the windows seven optimization for foresters from place so the strength in the entire drive bootable central -- technology. The internal drive is. To get more dynamic -- it can kind of adjust your -- little bit better than some the other drugs. And ultimately with the results and is better peak performance through better kind of which case there performance worst -- Saturday when you pretty much fills the entire yet or when you've used to drive a lot. And obviously with windows seven you enable instruction called -- Don't get into the details of that but but it basically. Makes it so that here your performance degradation of the time used to be elected -- like factor this lets you kind of flatten that much power. As long as you're not physically -- right. So basically -- because the issues as you write regret it basically fills. It it doesn't likely doesn't race well yes the -- that when you're talking about memory compared to traditional. So will that improve over time or how -- deal with. Or it's something that honestly I think in talent and to a certain extent and the -- have have already dealt with and in. As good as they can't today and and good enough that I would recommend you know people divine right it's it's used in all my systems so. I'm happy that you're also using it as a stretch drive and running like several gigabytes of video through a daily basis yes you know I -- my page files stored on it but I'm not using in his -- you know multi terabyte of storage drive because it's just not cost effective. If you look at you know. One of the things that entails working on is is not necessarily. Optimizing for peak assist the performance sure but trying to make sure that you have consistent performance over the lifespan of the -- which is a pretty easily with some good drives around earlier this year as you certainly fill the driver just used to drive road to a constantly getting. Brewers dropped -- clip almost yet so what you're gonna see anything in the next generation and and the generation beyond that is kind of more consistent performance. So you won't see this it appeasement now it's time. But the performance be consistent across Galactica. So in terms -- of assist these."

" Becoming mainstream end of next year they're gonna be anywhere near parity with rotating media -- firmware to -- or do we have --"

" United see it with peer to threaten me for what the question is when this again. Affordable picture right I personally I view it as today it's affordable. The reason being is I've always characterized it as the single largest performance improvement you can do to your piece above. New CPU motherboard -- 64 bit windows seven with a core I 712 megabytes ram that's not gonna equate this sort of -- performance of a now it you know and addresses of -- problem for a bit but I think if you're bound by compute. Throwing more computer at the problem would be fun picture but you know I think everyone to a certain extent is bound by IO performance so you gotta throw mob war I am so the problem. So personally I -- today at at the three and intolerable level I I believe that's the I think of the course next year you'll probably see that fall by another thirty to 50%. So all of a sudden entry level -- these potter books yet. I I think gas and William might see stuff under under the -- here and and with that people are trying to creative because several wants to hit that that -- on -- price point. You know I think it becomes more mainstream for the the performance to -- the easiest classes of user. But in Atlanta. And and I think 3132. Is when we start seeing it much more pervasive and so it's a popular BC'S_N. Kinda scary and -- thank you so much thank you."

" But he's done and what followed and -- can check this site an ad tech dot com it is an outstanding -- harbor views and track it and PC tech development we highly recommended before. You start by -- he uses them. Coming up next. Song and you're helping attitude that it would take a moment for -- one of our sponsors the united states air force."

" Alex -- it I have heard of something called okay. I don't like hackers are good for your computer but I don't know what it is or how to use it can you help me. Alec well in the networking had been what do want pages and pack with the patent and it could be viewed and all day it. -- Is gonna hack -- the network to -- to determine if a host is available the other into the network. It -- how long it to reefs that host and it's commonly used to quickly find out if your network is connected to the Internet now if your windows goes start. Run type CMD an in the it would of the pops up that's the big black when you full text typing -- IP address for the your -- which are checking up on. -- Google just typing google.com. And it'll basically tell you can get -- is connected and how fast or slow that connection basically the latency connection. He's running now. This is fun typing -- through. He or EC ERT and seeing your -- and along with the times -- step is a great tool -- figure out problems between your eyes. Or to great first step to turn you something like figure out. Why your videos download so slow."

" The first time ever heard the term is an IRC channels that's for the pong came. And titan looking exclamation point -- wasn't paying -- when you explicitly paying it would give you back here and easy answer pong. Anyway out we had done a great response to the question attitude two weeks ago who's trying to batch edit some extra silence and his audience files. I'll what a popular suggestions was socks you can get that socks not SourceForge dot net. We got that answer from Kyle from I fix it was the first it would come back is actually in the studio and it's like yeah yes socks rich hedge -- I wrote in and he affect different but -- big fan of the shadow and it's a little script using stocks as well. On his tips -- socks from SourceForge extract directory create a batch file inside that folder and paste the following lines into it and see if here's the -- students can check out and regional hub for it there. And afterwards drag and drop all your and a half miles into this batch file and it will convert them on with a five point 25 seconds silence at the end. You may change the 525 number to your desired point 25 he needs you and group and also had a slightly different take on -- you the things the -- there as well.

I'm going to be super secure and make different passwords for everything, using a wide character space and avoiding dictionary entries ... then put them all behind a single password!

... wait ... what?

This is not secure folks. If you do it you're f***ing retarded.

Modern encryption is currently near enough impossible to break if you don't have the key but remember that the way you always get into this password management software is to use a password, which is by far the weakest link. All someone needs is that password and they can see everything. For the love of god, don't do what Patrick apparently does and put your bank details in there!

kismet might also be used in addition to wifradar. I avoid using anything that will easily corral passwords. It just makes them easier to hack as a whole.

Hotmail

In defense of Hotmail, I have had a Hotmail address since 1996. I really don't care for Gmail, Yahoo, etc. I also have way too much to change / move anyway.

A bit more emphasis maybe should have been put on making *good* passwords. If your password can be found in a dictionary or on your drivers license, you deserve the cyber butt raping you are going to get.

Oh...where did Patrick get the bear hoodie?
