Monday, September 14th, 2009 – running time 45:17
You say you want a revolution, is Beatles Rock Band it? Does great animation and story add up to 9? Should Whiteout be erased? Plus, the live panel from PAX!

Segments

Movies

Shane Acker's CG animated film, 9, tells the story of living automatons in a post-apocalyptic future. Alex, Dan, and Jeff love CGI animated movies, think automatons are rad, and totally dig the post-apocalypse. So why do they disagree so wildly about 9?

Comic book writer extraordinaire Greg Rucka's popular graphic novel, Whiteout has finally made it to the big screen, starring Kate Beckinsale. Is it a snow-covered thriller rivaling John Carpenter's The Thing, or... something else entirely. The guys bundle up to find out.

Beatles: Rock Band heralds the entry of arguably the world's greatest band into the realm of rhythm music games. " I regret that I really does know."

" Thank you so much in Edinburgh MIT I cannot wait to put that in my office."

" I this weekend movies we're talking about to two. -- reflects. One is an online -- them the other there. If you make a mistake you and eliminated wideout and a 109 into wealth that is really -- so we'll start at nine which is the bigger release for the knee capping off the summer. Com it is an animated film. From -- hacker who was so wet head animator and and and was. Nominated for an Academy Award for the short film nine of which this -- Is based and it's basically. A post apocalyptic. World where only seen the things we mean have survived. And it follows this. On -- in sac like. -- kind of character I'm dean didn't do Ramos and -- early -- denying it. Pain on his back and Z did explores this well -- happens upon other sack. Creatures with numbers -- on their backs as well. And find out what the hey has gone wrong button on -- it's produced by way. I. Timor -- top of the night watch trilogy and Tim Burton and but as I said directed by Jim hacker I second that kind of world that all those guys like to work in. Jack."

" What did you think of nine. I was I -- three enemy and you're right he's an animated body computers in July and it can I was disappointed by them. IA. -- I exacerbate I really can't really liked it and don't please please don't think. Yeah I think. I really liked its design. I'm I'm a sucker for that clockwork tech. Look and there's lots of really great clock word -- that you know that steam punk and make up. The world and make up. Items that they use but. This story really doesn't. Makes sense that it. To me that the bad guys are bad because they look bad basically it's it's like the evil look and stuff is evil and need charming good looking stuff is good and there's really no. Reasoning behind it. We'll get to the end and they reveal what the sort of premise was I think that's a really interest in concept of the movie doesn't. Presented in a way that makes me curious as to what that concept is throughout. I also found all of the animation is really great I found the CG itself to be pretty impressive. -- I think they were going for a kind of painted background look but ultimately it. I'm back on specifically talking about ultimately with a little blurry and didn't come off as being very impressive and and beyond the sacked. Wolf then we'll look. Sometimes who didn't look very good all the architecture placed over flat looking things in I was I was just gonna. -- See it that way you -- wasn't though isn't -- they and -- action."

" Yeah I. -- Or had the exact opposite opinion of you I really love this and yet I was I was great I was. -- Syria and end. Soulful. And artful and and unique and I felt like it was. You know we sell often get that movie that book that short story about it. She doesn't machines that humans build and could you know that becoming. Aware and trying to destroy the humans in it inevitably in those movies is the spirit of a human being is the EB. The you know love love of humanity that is always able to save the human race from the machines and in this movie it's. Taking and that. Concepts and showing you that that can even happened after all the humans are destroyed officer is yours and for me that was. So you need it's it's a story we've seen and I I I I disagree I love the animation up -- it was it was amazing and and some of the stuff they came up with it was funny it was. It was dark it was adults you know on the culture is PG thirteen it's taking either team I would not say is really don't for children and there's some really hard core things that happen. And so I love that I had it was I'd hook line is."

" I I was I found myself very disengaged in story writing really care. About what was happening and the short I didn't like the short film in the short film was very. Sit in -- very is that basically the same story by just much more Allegheny and suggested. And the movie just sort of explained all the things that you might infer from that inside and it sort and the explanations. I thought we're just. I know I've I've been there before and it didn't bring anything new to that by. I thought the action sequences were spectacular fire at a very neat. Bomb that kind of action sequence that you've seen in 3-D animation sat in a very like it did not grounded in the world of what how. Has to be possible so the way the camera in the PP don't move is all very thrilling. And ultimately didn't and ultimately magazine I coding this act grab on anything it but. I get my little -- tonight the luck on my dinner the -- news that you -- the enemy nation -- I was very clear that they're back on the specific about it but enemy. -- actual animation yet. -- but does the look of them I mean I didn't have the problem vote locked don't exactly -- in -- moving on. Bomb. -- White House. Is a a graphic novel I read it in. Either college or high school and law and I'm sure you did as well. But I don't know now long arm of and I graduated can't Hines and dad this is a movie that has been in the works for a longtime member when Reese Witherspoon was hot she was supposed to be the -- just saying and -- come but it was -- Greg rock that's the only bird yet. They warehouse people written on McGraw he's done a lot of work on the specifically. Gotham knights this is a great. Great detective. -- and I'm not lots of times so. Bomb why else starts essential. Well -- now -- not reason we saw this indicate back and sale and is a cop essentially anything -- Kind. He praised the oldest. Most isolated place in the world where that. Com that the text at the beginning and I would edit and also in the coming there's no way that has encountered it's first amber murder. Bomb. And it's directed by Dominic Sena who did what I thought was really -- it's time there's a -- from music videos commercials. If he didn't Michael Bay Wallach head to head back in baton. He did all the basically the nation that cute Janet Jackson is com. And and Indy California the Internet Brad Pitt. Yeah again the company California with a K yeah exactly and then went on to make -- a really lackluster. Bruckheimer action films when -- sixty seconds and and swordfish swordfish. Although the opening sequence in the movies and one in the back is like -- like having greater reasonably that was the first -- Mary -- yeah. A lot though monster's ball. That was Alexander's hosts and fish and I just think. So anyway as I say you tell us first and now a lot not I got this may all be actually more interesting than what we might have to say about white apple will see if that's your parental presume not sick I do yes not prove me."

" Wrong after Alex tells me I -- your rights that is that is crap and in light pretty crap like utter crap. I you know I mean there's a lot of laughing. At moments that shouldn't have been laughed at in the theater. Really bad light CNG. Stuff. There was I I love inconsistencies. You know she doesn't have gloves and puts a hand on metal and -- has to get her fingers Andy did and yet. You know somebody walks outside -- how we act -- that you don't want to most you know and and somebody is. Outside it when I guess Scotch walking down a wrote a poll sliding his hand -- metal handrail like. Come on look what's your -- it. So it was just it was bad at that -- didn't matter they were open is laughable it started like a Cinemax movie you know I mean linkages and that like. Cheesy guitar -- And while I'm just literally blocks in the first person you see she's walks -- and around -- already -- out hired came back and sale and we're putting her in a park and."

" Me I don't get a rectified and even then. -- invited the first five seconds and --"

" Figure -- a reason why just do that in the middle and Jaffa on stage and my being here here's -- here's what's not good about this."

" Hot so I'm not the dialogue and the plus."

" Isn't that acting is what is it about as an enemy that the setting which is it instantly compelling and I want this -- the likes -- yeah I was rooting for it and you know John carpenter's the thing is such an awesome off some. Film and if you have not seen and I urge you to Netflix and immediately but. They do such a good job and that movie of you know creating this great environment and then utilizing. What makes it stifling in difficult to live in and adding to the the terror they try to do that here too but ultimately we just get. Our selves -- to me kind of slasher movie. Where they want you to be curious as to who the slasher is but I was never curious now I couldn't predict I predicted everything among you know and an instrument and it's it's it's not good and and it's sad because it's a really cool idea I didn't read the comic and I knew what was happening now yeah. It's just not -- absolutely and I -- only -- that this. -- may not mean want to --"

" and any. It has thought this -- this this space movie set in this now and has that added the environment is dangerous. And that there are several -- and it has that as ticking clock where they have to get out of this place before our it's all night never you know. And there's a game didn't mean and then there is. The first ever murderer in this place it is very instinct I remember being much more a bigger deal on the common than what it was sort of -- thrown down that was it it was actually goes to murder and alliances and has."

" It happened I think. The moment accomplish your mission Indian movie that is featured in. That -- movie with the ropes that are the way to get from one place when another can't find out where you can't see anything in front of you is this rope system. -- Andy it was so it was handled so close -- it was so hard to understand the geography. A what was going online plus I don't know really when you -- me you could."

" See he says lightly you know what I can't -- sixty and are six inches of your face. Yet she's on the -- Then the bad guys coming and she season like seven feet away. They will make it even more pressure was you know he's there what you can't see him until he's on you yeah."

" That is the pressure that I I think I think it also speaks to you too."

" I think we've met -- off camera about how like -- was a great great story for video game like it was just it was directly turned into a movie. I don't know if that would -- that was just that was screenplay in this comic. Everything that comment was on the screen but it takes. It -- it I think sometimes we read these things and other mediums and we go man this would be great as that. And really it's great because it reminds you of that what it actually then why is that it wouldn't be as Francis. And driver and a Mac and."

" Okay."

" I hear about this conference that was great -- it didn't have him on top of that out -- let's start off all the talking a little bit about. The stuff that we've seen so far that we hear stoked about maybe you guys. So you or questions whatever."

" Big big big games you're obviously leopard it's usually a new level an awesome that's. I don't like the first on what I think I think that you want you picked the wrong I. Past which happens -- of -- it is not obvious the classic issued."

" And that's that's that's that's a fact that."

" It lets play a critical time so it outright at -- Sox -- but they also -- isn't it regularly update unity. Complexes. Put out."

" What should Hillary act and used me I got to trap sniper bullet was there and you know what I that in out of it and I just saw a glimpse of the -- corner of my --"

" Skeptic. I don't see how bargaining -- it's. Awesome they don't want -- people got."

" It does seem more -- The first one but the way into the guys that doesn't work look at Jeter can't quite I don't know what is the frame rate looks a lot -- Yeah it's --"

" Well let's -- have a longer time to play with -- Some protests and -- lazy. You know I remember where it -- an attack on the Dreamcast and we're not I want I don't remember plain -- Barack and I came. Wasn't so it's never gonna get him to get. I suspect it'll again might perfect our."

" have -- different is that all of the difference just being able to cut that everything is next for this it was awesome IMAX that is what I was thinking about what's been. It looks McConnell is awesome. I feel like I'm going to change. Did you going to carry out what I'm doing so once more because there's always going to be quite -- there's a works in. And often does a -- it's a -- like. -- of tech heavy rain this year. Do is bring it places like like this because that's a game where actors and playing is believing. Everybody thinks are just you know mr. Clinton is really not it's it's much different I urge everybody to you know over the disputed check -- convinced us and we can be treated. Also did and I wouldn't check -- when you what are."

" When you when you play aspects --"

" Yeah. -- that's -- and it's sort of what you want as far as three running music. It's like it's like -- Most clicked on that game is as well as well but you have mirror's -- like for your writing abilities and to be --"

" Agencies -- rumored to be a light and run around so imagine like it's not like cheaters and with good you think Iraq is different -- they're --"

" I wish there was -- that bank. The important thing here is like. Over the shoulders that you seen doing that cool slightly and talking things yeah but -- not the it's also scored just spend. The others in the -- titles and I think that we were all. Okay okay and -- and."

" Fortunately independent games that he wouldn't we he. Upon that we didn't really work really hard radars. That we saw everybody has -- check out one of those change. Yes -- and."

" Okay -- expect it can't edit internal and it is currently without publisher that is I don't think. And publisher. How big buttons and get it looks pretty women are definitely going to find it Dreamcast is now that's. Yeah it's obviously there. No I -- I. It's --"

" I -- Obama should we just to develop into our estimates that."

" February isn't totally change change change dot com I think -- Latin America. It is yeah honestly it's just talk that it presented."

" its its immediate action platform."

" Very he -- any."

" Hand drawn look you I think we're the bastion -- the chambers -- mass destruction and it could but it really isn't I'm gonna. -- West. Point and really it is indeed bird and bat it is just got an. -- but yeah. Tell her what it does not do justice to its workers and chains and GO. That's jeans and a chainsaw and gun running part of uncertain that further style grappling next. Six -- lives you know look a lot. Being old style besides earlier -- recruitment of her. Much and would look how he's just fun. It style wise it looks like a cross between Rambo and this product candidate might be an act that was -- election."

" Big square best return on any other game that. My people are excited out my game and shot so far as the new game from Ron Gilbert which is desperate. And I don't think that's. Got hot yeah -- an internal track. Marks out of deaths. Just internal market."

" How it looks so cool it's it's like it's almost like a cross between people to new and -- than --"

" It's just -- look at your."

" Gonna fly -- out -- luck that's an art style that I've never seen anyone do before it's completely originally you look at that -- that's just think it's elegant looks like."

" It looks really deep and it's got a great humor -- Gilbert is they've all seen how great America and it's. It looks like there's tons and tons of items to get its role playing gaming can."

" I can just pop up -- world and the world that something. It's under you it's almost a little bit out of my doubts outlook two. It. That's funny and fun now and all I don't know in -- it's old the old -- but he -- experience -- wow I don't chemicals and -- yeah. What I thought wow combat was -- It feels like it is just for the fun parts of those aspects of well. Come back and that sort of forty whatever atlas. Yeah. And I yeah results that -- even -- you can contact yeah we -- and forms a -- engaged chickens against people they."

" Thank you way to -- yet knowledge and -- and kill hundreds in his and they start to realize what it doesn't it that's it must be our -- yeah."

" Everybody it's. Always -- and it's really really really funny -- meet the exchanges that you need to -- And it's he could she's got a lot of options as well balanced and I. We're excited about the game than almost anything else yeah my one thing that I hope they do each week you and I talked about doing it in my co operation to the."

" Yeah I -- dozens but it just looks like someone's got a life. There's a little bit gauntlet I've to a helicopter or diablo or to other."

" Yeah all right so let us yeah that's that's going to be our take on -- so -- with one day."

" They'll have not seen any problems are told Republican over -- meeting on Sunday so just. It -- those are results."

" And so you hear about them."

" Good."

" Like many people all. I believe The Beatles are the greatest band ever walked the face of the earth thing. And since the advent of music rhythm games I think it's been pretty well except that the holy Grail. Of music licensing rights has been The Beatles. We talk about the tire fire last week so this we -- gonna talk about the big release of Beatles rock band from harmonics NEA. And these other people that -- the first shoe dropping games and even before that the very first Guitar Hero game before that the split. And -- This isn't. Very much a Beatles experience if you've been eaten all watching it any kind of media even seeing an onslaught of new Beatles advertising. It coincides of the re released remastered. Compendium of all The Beatles Beatles albums. And so it'd be very much is about the experience. The store any of deed -- Beatles career and it takes away and several things that have we've grown accustomed to in the rock band franchise like. Drum fill holes and and few of the things but it -- You -- the story of The Beatles and and there's a much bigger emphasis. On visual representation that."

" Dan you -- Are admitted leave. Cool on the on the whole notion of -- them. Music engine cooled a little bit having him on the music rhythm games has believe -- comes -- I'm there man but specifically plastic instrument games drag it. -- comments here is very happy. On the -- conga -- so a lot of I'd love their -- is and that I'm not. And talking now about these are gonna but The Beatles run in which you played this week I own. Washington's was to play it would have been helpful yeah that I think John increasing several conflicting things. But up well what you like to say yes you say no benefit in. I think it's incredibly well need to gain insanely well mean it in that. Com it really just -- described it really does is. The way to do it deals you gain justice in that. You're playing the story of their career is in new venues that they played in the songs per that our you know fitting in -- and I should also Andrew -- of I -- And clearly overlooked the biggest addition which is the vocal -- and multiple multiple microphone inputs and you can harmonize with The Beatles thought hey that's a big part of their -- I only own -- guitar from Guitar Hero of the rain that's how I experienced the game."

" let -- get -- and animation in the opening animation which we saw at. And the route to gain at the end if somebody is caught in this commercial animation house outside app that I won awards for some -- and is. Like a work of art and really only animation is a work. Are -- short film that's phenomenal. On an ending of the storm on it continues that true. But the beginning is. Com. Spybot. It. Then this all having us at all that's. -- meaning long -- I -- I did promise I loved the first half of The Beatles career when they get into that we -- psychedelic -- stuff I I I these -- contrast at least on the tracks they included in here there are some tracks they didn't include it. I can look forward to a deal -- hopefully but while playing games. As great as it isn't as great as the -- hoses and and really there is. Because we never tell -- he's gonna show. There really is nothing in any other medium they can compare like Staal and the deals are like is it George Lucas had need forty Star Wars -- I mean my hand they had every single one of their things of songs yeah some people don't. We're like insanely good. -- It -- days it still some courage you know like insane. And it's amazing they've played those but. Playing -- you know sitting playing throughout the whole story I kind of was like. Getting that Guitar Hero fever Iraq in favor of like I was long for the entire -- which has got to play earlier in the week. I I want and I think I like it's absolutely cowardly another song but it is sort of all of the scene so I don't wish it it was deals he you know way. But that image -- mean that The Beatles pack. Act was Alan -- yes -- average rock exactly. But it has meantime it's Cassini will only disk that is almost worth the price they really do -- sit up. But it just you know what I enjoy it I would have rather more variety."

" What are you saying and it wouldn't let me just say right -- how -- The Beatles -- you are hasn't -- and that's into The Beatles are those African Beatles like many can't not be meals and any act -- who was eager to know The Beatles I know finally I grew up listening -- Beatles because my parents listen to The Beatles and you know they have. To -- stubs from when they went and saw The Beatles in concert and it's like. And that's crazy -- And they thought it yet Krista Anderson that Compton. At. But Dan yeah it is is right and in the game itself is such a an amazing experience. But I did find myself. Wanting for one more Beatles songs because a lot of The Beatles songs I really love word you know is like. They're going and other you know it's really top -- you know with with Qatar -- with rock and you always get that like well I don't know this fans I don't really know this song. But it's rare form. This is about I'd say 75%. Of the size in here are light years. And there's a good 2535%. Of -- on an ally has demonstrated a segment the next on those that are really they care about this are now that this. I didn't necessarily get that percentage when you put it that way for you well but for but if I mean it doubles point that I was excited about was that it's going to be a -- it's going to be that that that one where every song is is ideal song it's not the greatest hits album. -- rights being exactly."

" Would someone go play this dousing out well but at how many like someone that -- they had so many other -- favorites anyway you away from great great game. Super short."

" You know you can kind of later at one sitting almost all of us but these are about no blood but. Short enough that you know pilots -- back through that -- that here's what I want out of this game. Actually it's historic moment and it was amazing and on -- watts looked on the photos you -- not to myself and movies days. Amazing stuff easy stuff that you unlock is go back and watch says and it eats up the little kids that play right before your song starts of them like starting on yeah. Yeah it's there's a lot here to experience. My big question is I'd go to a party. And we're playing rock band two is there a way for me to get these songs in Iraq. That you know I -- thousands of -- because -- just last -- I -- the answer is now. But I wanted to because I want to be able to play The Beatles songs. When I'm playing -- and that's rocked and I think has wail look over Guitar Hero right now. Is that everything that you own is there it's in one place in -- is it's just that area. To have -- switch to get all I wanna play you know Niagara under an hour help was helped plan and again. Can't so like I wanna play you know pay -- right area our day trippers on the okay well let's stop this game put the other game and started and ended and that's it you know I mean I think it is it just really it's like we're gonna have Beatles night so it feels nice and subsequently -- Yeah songs for that it does feel a little bit and I hate even raise this issue but it feels a little bit like."

" A money grab it in the sense. We're gonna. Thanks so at least it wasn't -- yeah gold price of an end and what we're gonna give me everything we're just gonna meted out as we see fit right you know you're --"

" Able to download these full albums but."

" You gonna have to pay what not -- download those albums like could you download the white album in ten rocked into. I can't answer that I don't think so there's the answers yes -- activity could don't think so. I don't know the answer that we should find that out back let's I actually really really agree with Christina and ask your question just -- you weird like blurring stuttering issues."

" There's who have played at one thing -- always say is."

" I love -- I don't know if his technically in the hardest on army that blades came on an expert on Iran's notorious for being there are some -- all you need is."

" Irene is actually in the gains -- preferred in the other guitar heroes and rock bands. Like it's chord it's not there's not a lot of light -- that he's okay. I lot of different kind of -- that was gonna make."

" Which is here's a game we started with the music and media game rather than we're gonna make a game what's the best music to fit into this day and and I think that as we've gone on it. It -- as these games he's written is against the maturity it's gotten to be a little bit. Less about the game and more about the music by angry and that but but when he started when the first -- retires came out all the songs that were chosen. Mean a lot of that was -- could get sure it was like what is the coolest. For the game and it's very telling that this game is called Beatles rock band not rock band Beatles because that's how this game is presented it is. A fantastic Beatles came if you're -- Beatles fan that's about it must get its luck yet if you're a rock band thing it is not. For me it's not the game that I I want as a rock band right it's you know you -- just doesn't it like -- ran out. Fantasize about playing guitar along with The Beatles I did you fantasize about singing Beatles and that experience."

" Big square best return on any other game that. My people are excited out my game and shot so far as the new game from Ron Gilbert which is desperate. And I don't think that's. Got hot yeah -- an internal track. Marks out of deaths. Just internal market."

Yeah and -- I'm I'm I'm finding that I'm enjoying guitar verify is a little bit more because there's more to do there's more different kinds challenges as more different. Kinds of songs I created as a -- This would have been a wonderful downloadable -- for rocket. That said it's making life let me just a Dover there's a -- exist in the yeah vocal stuff they do is the first book will rock band game or target warned them that really emphasis is on the locals and I think. It's not a great guitar game it's not the best drum game but it's a fantastic vocal game and I think a lot of people don't love The Beatles are people that don't. Fantasize about playing guitar along with The Beatles I did you fantasize about singing Beatles and that experience."

" Is really fun yeah -- doesn't think -- I was a teen stopped because Steve he knew nothing about this stuff. Was asking about -- Guitar Hero or rock band. And I got I was helping and is trying to explain the difference between then they employers -- there's a million more toys and an employee write these and any says well what can wait a couple weeks of Beatles it's a couple weeks ago Beatles rock bands coming out because it's a -- that's when I want Leno does night. This is sort of this could be the -- We'll definitely and it's going to bring pet people and not what I want -- to --"

" And I was playing I want in my parents to be here so they can be like this I mean I mean because it and it -- Jan money easy yeah in lake it would be really over and a big jam on hard."

" RS. But I mean it was I don't exacerbating. There's a lot there's a lot of Beatles songs that but I want to be in there that are not and you know that'd be in June. -- Buffalo Bills. But I -- as of this moment as a -- right now. I am looking more forward play guitar or 5 more than I am with -- sort of thing doesn't and a I didn't. Episode 130: Meat Flesh - The Beatles: Rock Band, 9, Whiteout & the PAX Panel

It's birthday time for two members of the team! Also this week the guys talk about Beatles: Rock Band, how does it compare to the recent release of Guitar Hero 5? Do 9 and Whiteout live up to all the hype they're getting in movies? And we can't forget about the Penny Arcade Expo where we get to hear which games on the floor were their favorites, and which ones surprised them!

All that and more in this week's episode, Meat Flesh! Happy Birthday!

I really wish they would have gotten Heather's reaction on camera.

Sounds like WHITEOUT suffers the same bad translation problems that 30 DAYS OF NIGHT did.

This show seemed a little askew. No opening, the pretty funny opening of gifts, and the PAX panel. It felt looser, like they weren't on any time constraints or something...

I haven't seen Whiteout yet, but I actually enjoyed 30 Days of Night, as far as crazy stuff happening in snow movies is concerned. And honestly I'm kinda psyched to watch the third Twilight movie knowing David Slade is gonna direct it, hopefully he makes that series a little less suck.

Loved the 'Hipster Doofus' portrait! What a great gift!

Yep, no intro on this one. Looks like they are gearing up for something big next week!!

I loved 9! For someone who thinks the whole 'machines taking over' concept is getting a little long in the tooth, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie.
